Happy New Year! We had a wonderful New Year’s Eve. Both kids made it to midnight, but just barely – and they were asleep about 30 seconds into the new year. It’s officially back to regular life around here as of tomorrow – Annabel is back to school, I’m back to deadlines, and Mike is back in the office. I know it’s going to be nice to have our routines again, although I’m not really excited to wake up to an alarm, or pack lunches! But Annabel can’t wait to see her friends at school, so I know it will be cute to see them greeting each other at drop off tomorrow.

~You long-time readers might remember that, not long after I started working for Verve Music Group, I had the opportunity to spend a few days with Natalie Cole as she did press for a new album. At 23-years-old, my job during the press days was to chauffeur around the New York label people, and buy whatever treats Natalie wanted. I didn’t expect to actually interact with her at all, but she introduced herself to me, asked me questions, joked around, and gave me a hug at the end of each day. I remember being blown away by how kind she was, and how she made me feel important and noticed. I knew that being good with people was part of why she was so successful, but it didn’t matter – I left our three days together with a ton of confidence that I carried with me throughout the years I worked for that company. I was terribly saddened to hear about her passing on New Year’s Eve. She will be missed by so many.

I was wondering what you thought about Cole’s passing– your I got love on my palm pilot posts is one of my favorites (haven’t been reading that long but I read the archives LOL). Such a funny story and she seemed like such a nice lady as well as talented. Sad way to start the new year.
If I had kept going with education, SpEd had been my ultimate goal. I’d always loved to help people learn-especially those struggling. The whole “other” side of it is partially why I quit in student teaching– I just could NOT handle everything ON TOP OF TEACHING. Teaching and preparing lessons that fit the standards is hard enough without all the other crap teachers do. I commend our SpEd teachers especially– they are amazing humans!
