The countdown is on to James’ Star Wars birthday party! I was walking through Joann’s Fabric getting supplies for some of the other things I’m putting together for the party when I came across Jumbo Chenille Stem. I thought it looked like hair, and then an idea was born. I was thinking I would make a Leia Bun headband just for myself, but this turned out so easy that I might end up making a bunch for the party.
Jumbo chenille stem (aka giant pipe cleaners)
Headband
Craft foam
Brown felt
Scissors
Glue gun
Circle to trace
Pen
I used the top of a can to trace circles onto craft foam, then I cut them out.
I hot glued the end of the chenille stem to the center of the craft foam, then I wound it in a spiral around itself, gluing it down as I went. When I was done, I cut off the excess chenille.
Then I did it again to make another “bun.”
I glued one of the buns down onto the headband…luckily I realized right before I glued it that I shouldn’t glue it to the end of the headband or it wouldn’t be wearable (the ends of the headband still have to slide behind the ears). I repeated on the other side with the other bun.
I cut out some small squares of felt…
…and then glued it them down on the inside of the bun to make everything extra secure.
I think they look a lot like hair. Ok fine, they look enough like hair.
Annabel was my model and immediately declared that she wanted a headband, too. Rey is cool and all, but General Organa is the OG.
I am still not used to that toothless smile!
After James saw Annie wearing the headband, he wanted in on it, too.
LOL forever.
Any questions, let me know. Have fun!
LD's Mom says:
Okay, that’s awesome for the party for everyone but Annie. Are you going to do for real Star Wars hair on her? Because we all love how blessed she is with the perfect hair and the mom who knows how to style it just right!
Lanie says:
Such a great idea – thank you for sharing! Annie and James are so adorable!
