Friends, we are gathered here today to say goodbye to my favorite pair of jeans.
They were my favorite pair of jeans because they were perfectly broken in. They always fit just right, even out of the wash. I know, that seems impossible, but that is what made these jeans so special. They were magical.
Me and my jeans in happier times. Also pictured: the rest of my family.
As any woman knows, when you have a pair of great jeans, you wear them as often as is socially acceptable. Or if you’re like me and you don’t care about such things, daily. Because they are the perfect jeans, social constructs be damned! Of course, that meant that the jeans went through greater than average wear-and-tear. The small frayed spot above the knee grew into a full-fledged hole. I didn’t care. That made them more authentic. Still, considering how often I wore them, they were in great shape.
But I forgot about my thighs.
Like the majority of the non-supermodel population, my thighs rub together when I walk. The only time in my life my thighs didn’t rub together was when I was a baby, and that was only because my diaper made me bow-legged.
I managed to remain blissfully unaware of the damage my thighs had wrought until a few days ago, when Annabel said to me, “Mom! I can see your underwear!” When I asked her where, she pointed between my legs. And that was when I saw it:
Just to put the size of that hole on the left into perspective, my gynecologist wouldn’t need me to take off my jeans at my next appointment.
At first I was in denial. I tried wearing them again and oh-so-casually mentioned the hole to Mike. He glanced down and said, “Yeah, you need to retire those jeans. Have you been wearing them to Annie’s school like that?” Uh.
Obviously, I’ve been simultaneously mourning the loss of my jeans while googling to find a patch big enough to conceal the damage. When I am a famous jeans designer, my jeans will have reinforced thighs. Why is this not already a thing?
So thank you, dear jeans, for your years of service. I would make a montage of our time together but apparently there is only one picture of me wearing you because I am always behind the camera. But we had some good times together. RIP ripped jeans.
mags says:
hahaha…you made me laugh out loud! Too funny! I learned years ago when I was the GM of a restaurant, if I find something that is perfect – I always buy more than one…and in different colors if possible. Perfect black dress pants? Buy at least 3 pairs. Sandals that fit and look great – 2 pairs please! And don’t get me started on jeans. I have the hardest time finding ones that fit right. Found some at Walmart of all places last summer and bought 3 pairs! Probably sounds weird, but it works great for me:)
Panni says:
I do the same.
RzDrms says:
Been there, done that, wore them farrrr too long that way. The hell?!
TonyaM says:
I would totally patch those suckers. It won’t be perfect, but the patched area would blend and nobody would notice. I became a pro at that when my daughter was in a full-leg brace that ripped holes in the thigh of her opposite leg. It works!
Jess says:
Yeah, I would patch them too. It won’t be that visible.
Renee says:
Like you, I have the same problem. When I was living down in HB, I found a good tailor that would patch my jeans for me – $5 a pop – so I wouldn’t have to spend money on jeans that weren’t that comfortable! The tailor I found actually worked at a cleaners, one of my friends recommended her. So maybe you can find someone by you that could do the same
Becky says:
I had the same thing happen to me this past week with my favorite jeans, only they split right up the back pocket…while I had a carful of kids. They of course thought it was hilarious. Me, not so much.
Lauren says:
I have saved a few favorite pairs of jeans with similar damage with Denim Therapy (yes, a real thing)! You can send them your jeans, they will repair and send back! http://m.denimtherapy.com
Amy Asistin says:
Why have I never heard of this???
Thank you so much!!
Stephanie says:
Don’t give up! Your dry cleaners can reinforce that area in no time!!!
Adrianne says:
I can’t believe no one has asked… What kind of jeans?!? I’m not the same size as you, nor do I live on the same coast, so we won’t be competing for stock, but any time jeans (or any pants, really) are described as “perfect” is enough for me to want to at least go try on a pair!
Heather says:
LOL good point! They are Kut from the Kloth “boyfriend” jeans!
Melissa says:
Absolutely take them to the tailor/cleaner and they will patch them up for like 10 bucks. I’ve done it with all my favorite jeans and it’s more than worth it. I don’t sew so I have tried iron on patches and that was a disaster.
Margie says:
LOL at the gyno line.
Where did you get your jeans from?!
liz says:
Denim Doctors on 3rd (I think… Google them). When I lived in Studio City they repaired my crouch holes (classy term!) and let my jeans live longer. They are great! No options like that here in Phoenix. =(
Lena says:
Yep – every pair of jeans I own end up with the same problem. You’d think they would make thigh reinforced jeans and just acknowledge that real women’s thighs rub when they walk.
Erin says:
I second Denim Doctors! They are WIZARDS! They saved a pair of my jeans that I thought were done for sure.
Anna says:
Pretty sure I have that same pair of jeans! Kut from the Kloth (hate that spelling so much, btw) Catherine Boyfriend jeans. I got them in a Stitch Fix and love them, but my would-wear-every-day pair are similarly distressed Gap 1969 Authentic True Skinny Jeans that I got earlier this year on clearance for $25! They are a slimmer cut but are still so comfy and look great with any kind of top. Good to hear from other commenters that thigh breakthrough can be repaired if the time comes!
Nicole says:
Omg I’ve been known to iron patches to the inside of fave jeans–in the crotch and especially at the back pocket rivets!
Greis says:
My favorite pair just died the same way. Maybe they’ll be BFF’s in jean heaven. It was a sad day!!
I feel you!!
Ally says:
Hi Heather,
From what I can tell by reading your blog, you live in the LA area. I highly recommend Dr. Blue Jeans in Sherman Oaks on Van Nuys Blvd. I have brought countless pairs of jeans there with that exact problem and they are returned to me like new. Good luck!
Jeanie says:
This is indeed a sad occasion.
Jeanie says:
Also? Not that you asked, but my favorite jeans are Joe’s and Paige. I also have some AG that I’m fond of. I can’t believe they don’t stretch out. At all. Pst, get them at Nordstrom Rack to save about $100.
Nona says:
Seems like you have some options to get these repaired. Give us an update, if you do! I’d want to see how the repairs turn out (I didn’t know jeans could be fixed and have never had mine done.)
GreenInOC says:
The solution is so simple… denim underwear!
(for kicks I thought I’d quickly see if there were any on Etsy and there are although I would avoid the “furry” ones for obvious reasons! https://www.etsy.com/search/clothing/womens-clothing?q=denim+underwear&order=most_relevant&view_type=gallery&ship_to=US )
Jenb says:
This exact thing just happened to me!!!! And I’ve bought three new pairs of jeans and none of them are right. I miss my jeans so much!
Meg says:
I have had really good luck looking on Ebay for older pairs of my favorite jeans, especially for places like GAP that are always changing their styles. So then I can get a pair that I love for maybe a quarter of the price of new in the store. EVERYONE WINS (mostly my ass.)
Shea says:
Ahhh, that is the worst, good jeans are so hard to find! At least it was only Annabel who pointed them out. My dad split his favorite pants the other day, and a lady at Starbucks tapped him on the shoulder and said, “I feel like you’re old enough to not be embarrassed by me telling you your pants have split…” Which seems to add insult to injury, hahaha!
Leah says:
‘Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all. I envy you. I haven’t had a favorite pair of jeans in *years.* Working and having kids instead of exercising was part of it, sure, but also I cannot find a dang pair of jeans that doesn’t have some kind of stretchy material in it. I like good old fashioned denim and it’s so hard to find anymore.
Lisa N says:
Thank you! This is exactly where mine wear out, Every. Single. Time. I have a pair right now that is on the edge and haven’t been able to find a new pair I like. It’s vergeing on a pants emergency.
Lissa says:
I resisted buying new jeans for a long time (5 ft tall, big hips/booty, small waist makes my jeans-buying life HORRID. Then this winter my jeans with a quarters sized hole in that inner seam split WIDE when I stepped down off a carousel horse at the local amusement park (holiday lights event). I could no longer deny the inevitable. Luckily I quite randomly found the perfect fit in both regular and skinny jeans at Ross a month later for $40 total!
Auntie_M says:
So sad!!!
If you were in a cooler climate (such as the PNW, like me), your problem could be easily solved with a cute pair of bright tights under your beloved jeans…or thin leggings. We need the extra warmth up here most of the time, anyway.
You could go hippie chic & sew a dark blue bandana in there.
Lisa says:
Totally thought of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants….
