Last year on the morning of your birthday I wrote you a letter while you lay sleeping beside me. You were so much fun when you were awake, but I loved it when you slept. I often would lay down next to you and breathe you in, watching your eyelids flutter as you dreamed your sweet baby dreams. The morning of your first birthday, I whispered in your ear while you slept. I told you how much I loved you, and how lucky I felt to be your mom.
I love you even more today, and I still feel so lucky to be your mommy. I just wish I could whisper it right into your ear.
November 11th is a day I’ve been dreading for a while. I love birthdays so much, but the idea of yours arriving without you here has been really hard for me to think about. Sometimes I let my mind drift to all the things we could have done today. Lately, everywhere I look I see two year old girls holding their mommies’ hands. I try to imagine your little hand in mine as we walked (ran) down the path to a great adventure.
When I was a kid I used to think I’d feel so old and mature by the time I was a mom. That I’d have it all figured out. But the secret that no one tells you is that grown ups don’t really have it figured out, and that we still feel like kids in a lot of ways. When I found out I was pregnant with you, I was elated and totally freaked out. I was still a baby, and now I was going to have one! But then you came, and even though I still felt tiny and immature in so many ways, you made me feel so important. You trusted me and you needed me and I never doubted myself. I trusted you and needed you, too. I still do. I need you so much, baby.
It’s impossible to think about more November 11ths passing without you growing older next to me. It’s incomprehensible to think that I will never breathe you in again. The opportunities you were robbed of constantly smack me in the stomach and leave me doubled over. It is so unfair that you are missing out. It is so unfair that you aren’t here.
As your sister grows inside me, I wish so badly we could have a do-over. Because of the terrible gestation you had to endure, your little sister has benefited. She is healthy and strong, and it kills me that you couldn’t have that opportunity. I wish things were different. So, so different.
On your first birthday I told you you were my dream come true, and that is still the case. You are the best little kid a parent could ask for.
If you were sleeping next to me right now, I would whisper one other thing in your ear, something I whispered to you every night: “You are all I ever need.” It’s something I would say to remind myself that despite life’s curve balls, I was the luckiest person because I had you. And, even though I don’t have you in my arms anymore, I have you in my heart. It’s not how I imagined our lives, but I still know how lucky I am to have you there.
Happy birthday Madeline. I will celebrate you every day for the rest of my life.

You and Mike are in my thoughts and prayers each and everyday. Working in NICU as I do, we see sweet babies like Madeline everyday . I walk by each Giraffe that holds those sweet gifts from GOD and say a prayer for them and their parents.

The weather will be too gross to go outside for the next couple of days so I wont be able to enjoy a cream puff for you today, I will however light a candle for you and wear my prettiest purple shirt. Happy Birthday to that precious girl Maddie. Heather, your heart is broken I know, but your words to her are beautiful. She hears you, I know. She knows you are near her and that you will always be in your heart. Just as you are held in hers. I hope today will be bearable for you, I know it’s got to feel anything but. Your little one was a spark of hope in a sometimes hopeless world, she will never be forgotten, by anyone whose life she touched. You and Mike are in my prayers and heart today. I cry for what you will miss, but you are the most strong, amazing parents I have ever met. She, and you, remind me to be grateful every single day. We will hold you today.

Heather, I have been thinking of you on this day for a long time. I hope you are doing OK. I hope that you are not home alone with Miss Bink. I hope that you have your mom or a great friend or Mike with you all day, that you will not be alone for a single second. I so wish that Madeline was here on earth with you. Today especially, but every day. This “year of firsts” without Madeline here is gut wrenching. You know something, I bet your sweet Madeline would never have hit the “terrible” part of the terrible twos. She just seemed absolutely angelic and purely sweet (oh…AND adorable!!!!!!!!!!). I got a kick out of reading one day that she was so happy to share whatever she had. That’s unheard of for a little gal her age. Oh how I wish you still had your baby girl in your arms. Along with about 1,000 other people, by the looks of the comments above, I wore purple today & ate a cream bun for you. I want to thank you again for sharing your grief – just days after Maddie died, my sister’s friend had to take her 2yo girl to Emergency with breathing difficulties & I texted my sister with the symptoms/diagnosis from your posts/tweets — it was the same condition, & the doctors said she wouldn’t have been diagnosed in time without that information. Debi thanks you & we all send our love on this most difficult day. Your little elf was so beautiful.
That is so great that in Maddie’s short life, she was able to save another and hopefully many more through her charity and story!

Happy 2nd birthday dear sweet Maddie Moo! I imagine that you are looking down on your very loving parents, smiling that big toothy grin that you continue to be famous for, and your face covered in pastry cream just as your Mommy and Daddy had pictured.
It is so unfair that instead of that lovely sparkly pink and purple Abby Cadabby party; there are donations pouring into the March of Dimes in your memory. While you should be blowing out the candles on your second birthday cake; instead there are many cream puffs being eaten throughout the world.
It should have been different; it should have been so different. But Maddie; it is thanks to you that your baby sister will have a great start to her life. It is thanks to you that other mommies and daddies will have support in that scary place where you started your life. And it is thanks to you that the world is one step closer to making sure that all babies are born healthy and to term. And that Madeline; is such a precious gift that you have provided others.
You are so missed and so loved.
To Heather and Mike; thank you so much for sharing Madeline with the world. It has been such an honor to get to know your family through the triumphs and setbacks. My prayers are with you always.

When my two year old fought me this morning to put on a diaper I should have thought more about how lucky I am rather than how frustrated I was that I was running late.
I guess I was taught a much needed life lesson today on your page. Thank you.
On my way home I will stop at the bakery and buy a cream puff. I will NOT get it to go because I have to rush to the rest of my list of things. I will instead take a seat and let my 2yr old take his time and make a mess and think of your family and how lucky I am. How truly lucky I am.

I had planned to post something for Maddie today, and you know why I’m unable. But I want you to know how very much Maddie, you, Mike and Binky are loved. Last year I so enjoyed finding the exact right purple outfit for Maddie for her birthday. This year, I feel so sad as I see perfect purple outfits hanging on the racks. I so wish things were different. Love you.
This weekend, my son turned two. At his party, our friends and family gathered to celebrate. At one point, I was in the kitchen, and my good friend said to me: “who’s that cute little girl? she’s adorable!”.
There is a picture of Maddie on my fridge, from the swag bags at the People’s Party that I helped to pack. She has been on my fridge since I got home.
So I told my friend your story, her story, and I told her that although my son was celebrating his second birthday, I was thinking of you and your family only 2 days later unable to celebrate her 2nd birthday as you should.
From far away, across the world (literally; I’m north of Toronto in Canada), we think of you. I’m sorry that you can’t have the same party that we did.

Happy Bithday sweet Maddie! I never had the pleasure of meeting you in real life. Like thousands of others, I’ve learned about your sweet soul here on your mama’s blog. I don’t think any movie or great novel has ever captured the beauty and pain of life’s mysteries like reading about your familie’s journey.
One of my favorite Maddie moments is a video of you “driving” your pink car. You keep looking back at your mom with so much joy and love as if to say, “Is life really this good?” I imagine your momma would look at you and think the same thing. Who wouldn’t? It’s almost confusing how beautiful you are. How sweet. How full of spirit and joy.
My bithday wish for you is to be able to visit your mama in her sleep and give her a kiss and snuggle for a dreamtime eternity.

I’m picking up cream puffs on the way home today and we’ll send out a “Happy Birthday” cheer to Maddie: a special girl I never met but feel lucky to know.
I am crying again in my office. I have commented only once before, and it was shortly after I found your blog. At that time, in response to your October 29, 2009 post “Progress,” I wrote that I didn’t understand why I was so drawn to your blog and why I personally felt pain so acutely at the loss of your daughter.
I have since thought a lot about it, and I’ve realized that with parenthood (I am the mother of an almost-10-month-old daughter) comes vulnerability and constant fear. While you adore your child and love nothing more than spending time with her, watching her grow, you are also secretly and quietly afraid for her all the time.
Those fears were met for you, Heather, and I so wish I could make it not so. I would do most anything to bring back Maddie for you, and I am so sorry that I can’t. The pain that I feel in reading your posts is of course only a faction of what you live with everyday.
I am a Christian and I do know that Maddie is happy, well and waiting for you in heaven. At the same time, I also know that while this is consolation on a certain level, it would be hopelessly inadequate for me if something happened to my own daughter. THIS life, on earth, is the only one we know. So even knowing that our loved ones who have passed are waiting for us fails to give the consolation that it should because we know that we will not see them again in THIS life, and our concept of the next is so limited.
Still, I hope it does not offend you for me to offer a Bible verse as some comfort. Revelation 21:4 promises that God “will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”
I am so sorry that Maddie is not with you. I am so sorry that you will face birthdays to come without her. Today, I will cry again with you and along with the words above will simply offer you the knowledge, as is evident from the comments to this post, that so many of us are crying with you and offer our comfort.
I hope you can feel the big cosmic hug that is your’s and Mike’s today.

You came to see me one day through my niece, Now my niece is gravely ill (Please be her Guardian Angel? Please), You giggled at me, my niece said “baby”, My niece wasn’t a really big talker. I know it was you, The giggle was so YOU, never to be heard from Amber again or even before, Then after the giggle, the way Boogs tilted her head and said Baby? Like it was a statement/question that she didn’t know how to describe to me, It was surreal, amazing, And I know you are happy where you are. Please tell Amber to fight and stay here with us. I am not scared of her going to where you are, I know you are happy, We just don’t want to lose her. Her baby sister (she is 2 and baby sister is 1) is asleep in my arms, and Amber will be in my arms tomorrow for the first time in 5 mos and I will Pray so very hard over her. Knowing this date approaching, I have thought of you, Heather and Mike, and Maddie”s grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and all who were blessed to be in her personal presence during her brief and exuberant little life.
The date of 11/11 and numbers of 1111, seen as time on digital clocks, have been a new awareness to me for the past few years. When I found Maddie’s birthdate, after I had been reading your blog a few months, I was immediately struck by the significance of her birth date. These numbers are for spiritual connection with the universe….I know, it sounds kind of hocus pocus, but look into it if you haven’t already.
Maddie continues to touch so many, and I am one your readers who checks in with you every morning, prays for you every day and sends you the best energy…to one of the most inspirational, GREATEST MOMS, ever!!!!

I am so truly and deeply sorry for your loss. You are so strong. I am crying right now, as my heart breaks for you. I have suffered loss, in that I had a stillborn. I know how devastated I was. I cannot even imagine the pain that you have felt and are still feeling by having a child that you knew and played with and sang to, and got to know, suddenly pass away. You will always be in my thoughts and in my prayers. A friend gave me a book entitled, I am wherever you are by N.A. Noel and it has served as a source of comfort for me. Maybe it can be of some comfort for you too. I know that adding to your family is taking considerable strength. You must be going through a lot of different emotions right now. I will be thinking and praying for you and for both of your girls.
