I get asked to review a lot of things, but I only say yes to products that meet the following criteria: 1) it’s something I would actually use and tell my friends about, and 2) the company will give the product to one of my readers. I was thrilled when my buddies at Hewlett Packard asked me to review their HP Pavilion dm1 with AMD VISION Technology – and they said I could give one away, too!
This is a sweet little computer, you guys. It’s small like a netbook (it fits in the diaper bag and only weighs three pounds), but it has the power of a laptop.
This computer does everything I need it to do – process pictures, play music, and run all my social media programs – oh, and it does it while I’m blogging. Obviously I’m tech savvy, so to get a more “average Joe” opinion, I had my mom use it a few different times. Her observations:
“The computer moves very fast. It’s very lightweight and portable, which is great when I’m moving around for my eBay stuff or when I want to show Annie a video. The keyboard was easy on my arthritis, and scrolling on the touchpad was easy. The volume and brightness controls at the top are a revelation! Now I don’t have to go into the control panel! And did I mention how lightweight it is? I love that!”
It’s so fun if you read that in the voice of a lady from Boston. Even though she’s from LA.
A few things that are absolutely worth mentioning – up to 9.5 hours of battery life, a standard keyboard, and a built-in webcam. But easily the coolest (pun) thing the dm1 has is CoolSense technology. The laptop knows if the notebook is on your lap or the counter top and adjusts its temperature accordingly. No more burned laps!
Alright people – here’s the part you really want to know. To enter to win, please leave ONE comment per person, per IP address, PER EMAIL ADDRESS (seriously, just enter once) telling me what you’d use the computer for. It can be anything. The contest will go until Thursday April 28th at midnight Pacific time. Winner will be chosen via Random.Org and announced on Friday the 29th. And sorry, this giveaway is only open to US Residents.
The dm1 is available at HP Home & Home Office now at a starting price of $449.99.
Disclaimer: HP provided the computer for my review, but did not pay for or influence my opinion in any way.
Good luck everyone!
UPDATE!
The winner is Jennifer, who is going to give the computer to her daughter to do her homework. Congrats!
Thank you everyone for entering!

I’m having my first child in September and would LOVE a lightweight, diaper bag friendly computer to use to share photos and videos with family and friends through my blog and social media networks. (Also, my current computer has a virus that makes its display get all giant and pixelated, which makes it super hard to watch all of my shows on Hulu. I know the winner gets picked at random and that this is not Queen for a Day, but just thought I’d share.)
Kermit says:
I would use it in our homeschool.
tatiana says:

Leanne C. says:
I’d use it to stay in touch with my family and friends!
Lauren says:
I would use this computer for Internet usage mainly. And streaming television shows, specifically. I don’t have a television and I use my current laptop for EVERYTHING. It needs a break. I’d use it as a lightweight option to our current family computer. The one we have is harder to transport and is communal, so this would be easier to take up & down stairs and take out when we go. The computer I have is on its last leg.

Kasey Jackson says:
I’m going through a divorce and my husband kept the iMac at the house and now I’m stuck in a tiny apartment with my three kiddos, who are BEGGING me to get them a computer. I would use this to read blogs, check Facebook, Twitter, etc., and most importlantly upload and manage all my pictures of my kids… all while laying in bed. We currently have a desktop, and it’s a bummer that the only place I can sit and download, organize, and upload pictures is from my office desk. (Which is nowhere near TV or comfy pillows.)
Michelle Friedrich says:
I would love a new laptop. We have a very old desktop that is on it’s very last leg and my husband is unemployed coupled with many medical bills we have no money for updating our computer. Heather Beebe-Stevens says:
I would replace my old Dell laptop that works fine (and so I haevn’t justified replacing it yet), but needs to be attached to the wall at all times…and that every so often doesn’t believe that it is plugged in through a Dell plug-in and therefore refuses to work until I use the “correct” attachment.
It is a persnickety, crotchety old-man of a computer. And its time to pass it on to my kids for their Netflix viewing pleasure….and to use a nice new (not-wall-dependent) laptop for blog browsing and Ancestry.com snooping!
Just Shireen says:

I would use the laptop to stay in touch with my amazing step twins. They are amazing kids and are my world along with my daughter). I would also use the laptop in our travel to see the kids to help me stay on top of things at home. I also have a five year old daughter who will be entering Kindergarten and I would be able to help her do educational games.

I recently had both my laptop and my desktop die on me. We replaced the desktop, but it’s been rough trying to get by with just the one computer in the house since my husband and I both need it for work sometimes.
Plus today’s my birthday, and that would be an awesome present!
trinity hanson says:
awesome!
Megan says:
It does sound sweet. 9.5 hours of battery life! In fact, that’s why I’d most like this computer. The wires in the power cord on my current Toshiba have actually come out of their plastic casing, and I’ve had to tape them back in, multiple times. The battery only charges if the cord is held in a certain position. I don’t know how much longer till it kicks the bucket, so it’d be great to not have to worry about this anymore. I’d use the computer for Facebook, web surfing, occasional writing, um, playing Sims 3 (nerdy indulgence.) and of course reading this blog!
Thanks for giving us this opportunity!

Terribly enough to burn you. A new laptop would be perfect for this college student on the go…and did I mention blogging would be super easy on a laptop I could take out of my dorm room?

Okay, okay… Dishonesty and hyperbole probably doesn’t garner extra entries in the contest, right? I would use it to read blogs, catch up on celebrity gossip, research my next happy hour location, upload photos, and post unexciting updates about my life to Facebook. My thumbs will be happy, because they are totally getting overworked now that my primary method of interneting is via my iPhone. I might even try to learn to tweet. (How’s that for exciting?)
Kari says:
I would use the laptop for bills and blogs. Our old computer is so SLOWWWW and is ready to die at any moment!

I would use it for pictures of course.. I own a HP as my home computer and I love it, but if I needed to save my pictures in case of a fire it would be kinda hard to grab on the go ya know? Hi Heather! I would use this for my new career in real estate! My desktop PC recently died (RIP old girl) and is now a gigantic paperweight and unfortunately the real estate industry does not have their industry sites compatible with Mac (which is the laptop I currently have) So I am in desperate need of a PC now!
stacey says:
I would use this to take notes in my classes at school.
Laryssa says:
That looks like an awesome little computer! I’d use it when I go away on vacation since it’s so portable. It would also be helpful since my laptop has been out of commission for about 5 months now.
Jess says:
I stopped writing when my grandma died 8 years ago. I’d use that computer as a writing only computer to pick up and start writing again. No blogs on it, no FB, no twitter, just pure and simple writing. To make grandma proud.
Diana says:
So I would not get yelled at when I use my kids laptops.
Because everybody in my house has a laptop but ME!!!!!!!!!!!
LibraryGirl62 says:

Rebecca says:
I would bring the computer with me to hospital visits that I take my son to. I could better log various facts and keep my questions filed for the doctor. It would also keep me entertained during the time my son is in surgery and would hopefully distract him while he is recovering from painful procedures while he is playing games on the computer. I would love to win this. I imagine it would ease some stress from my shoulders and my 4 year old boy.
Kathryn p. says:
I just got a new laptop less than 2 weeks ago for my 30th birthday. But my husband thinks that it was really meant for him and has been using it every second he is home. There is constantly a baseball game on there along with his sports sites and it is logged in to his email. The photo editing that this was supposed to enable me to do more easily is not happening. Hi,
Well since our relatively new Dell died (only 13 months old, we bought it last year) last week , and we had to buy a cheapy makeshift computer, I would totally love to win this one. One of the things I missed the most while without a computer, was reading my favorite blogs (your daily blog, mattlogelin.com and enjoying the small things), and learning more about my 2 year battle with infertility. If I won this computer, I would continue to do all previously mentioned things and possibly start my (or really invest) in writing my own blog about PCOS and infertility.

Karo says:
Awesome news! I hate burned laps and heavy laptops. But most important, I would be able to carry this little laptop around with me when I run to the library, coffee shop, etc. to do my writing and grading. I hurt my back in a car accident and I can’t carry anything heavy (like my current laptop…grrr) so this would actually allow me to have a light-weight writing life rather than pulling a heavy wheeled backpack with me everywhere I go. It’s even gotten LOUDER over the winter as the Illinois weather wreaked havoc on the wheels. Some of my co-workers joke about how they hear me coming down the hall when I’m pulling the backback! I’d much rather be the object of their envy with my little HP than the butt of their jokes about my loud wheels…

Liz says:
Awesome! I’m a grad student, and I would use this when I take research trips and need to drag my computer around all the time for some very specific and important tasks, but don’t actually need to take my bigger laptop. I would use this as a gift for my mother-in-law. She’s had a rough couple of years (divorced, lost house – the new American story?) that culminated in us moving away from her with our three kids to another state. She doesn’t have a computer and is just savvy enough to send me 10 chain mails each time she goes to the local library to check her mail .. but that’s about it. My kids, however, are very computer savvy and would love to be able to skype with their Grandma and would teach her the ways of a 5-year old across the internet.

Everything. Our laptop (his name is Llama, thanks to our 3.5 year old daughter) is on his last legs. Missing a function key. Enter key randomly flips up at the worst times. Big chunk of plastic on the right corner completely gone. Battery is useless at this point. Overheats to the point of 3rd degree burns (okay, not that hot but still hot). Llama is a sad little trooper but I’m not sure there’s much fight left in him.

I would give this to my Gramma and get her online. She lives alone in St. Louis. The recent tornadoes and the two bad falls she’s had in the past two years have us really worried. It would be great to see her and she how she’s doing rather than just talk with her on the phone.
I just showed my mom Skype and I think all of us together on group video calls would do a lot to keep Gram in good spirits, especially because she’d get to see my DS (her only great grandchild) more than once a year.

I prefer to type as they talk during meetings at the hospital where I work, editing as I go along with a nearly finished product at the end of the meeting. Recently my computer died and I’m having to resort to using my Blackberry Torch or my work computer as I check blogs daily. I would really love to start writing more but without, it makes life a bit more frustrating for me and I’m not as much inclined to write a novel on my little qwerty keyboard…. Also, my husband has a mini lap top and honest to god, anytime I touch it he goes ballistic or insists on knowing every.single.thing. I’m doing on it. “I’m surfing, dear, what sort of answer are you looking for?”
Good luck all!!
Thanks Heather.

While I am not thrilled, at least he still has a job! We can bring very little so I can’t bring my desk top and since I am stuck in the 90’s still and do not own a lap top, I am a little screwed and been thinking I need a lap top to be able to keep our family in tune with our 2 little girls. I got my fingers & toes crossed that I win!
I love your blog by the way!
Denise says:
I’ll be going into my last year of law school next year, and my current laptop is 5 years old and dying a slow death, but I can’t really afford to buy a new one so I just keep willing it to live. I would actually use this computer to give to my daughter and her boyfriend. My 2 daughters live together and one is getting married and the computer they have belongs to her so she will be taking it when she moves in with her husband. The daughter who will be left without just cannot afford to get anything. They both work for the State of CA and have taken numerous hits financially with the furloughs and not being able to promote because of the freeze. They would be so thankful just to have something to be able to use to keep in contact with family.
Thanks, Heather, I’ve been following you for quite a while, and you and your beautiful family bring many smiles along with the tears. You are always in my prayers.

Count me in! My HP laptop DIED back in like….NOVEMBER? Just totally crapped out on me, but in it’s defense, it was a good computer while it lasted and it went everywhere with me so I got good use out of it. Fortunately I do have a desktop, but that isn’t exactly convenient because I can’t take it ANYWHERE I GO! IF I won this laptop I would use it to blog (although I wouldn’t call what I do “blogging”…its more like post once a month about the goings on of my family..so it’s just more of a journal for myself and someday my kids). Email, facebook, you know….important stuff Would be awesome to have a new laptop!!
Christina says:

Tanya says:
I would use this to finally get my kids’ pictures in order and printed so they don’t think their mother doesn’t love them enough to create baby albums. Our current laptop is so slow and corrupted now that I can NOT handle sitting while it takes 5 hours to download anything from my camera, so they keep looking at their albums that end at 6 months (they’re 2 and 3 now), and ask where the rest of the pictures are.

Heather,
I’m trying to “unsubscribe” to comments using this format because I can’t uncheck the box without a comment. Someone stop the comments! lol
Hannah says:
I would use the computer to give to my sister who is currently a freshmen in college, studying nursing. We both are putting ourselves through school on our own, and she is working four jobs just to pay off her living expenses and tuition–which doesn’t leave too much extra money for anything else. Unfortunately for her, her computer just died, leaving her in a bit of a bind as far as homework and studying goes. If I could afford to get her one myself, I totally would, (dang student budget) as it would make the smartest and busiest person that I know breathe a little bit easier.
Thanks Heather!
Heather says:
I would use this computer for everything! I am going to be a college graduate in about three weeks and my 2007 Dell is on its third hard drive, is as slow as molasses, and is no longer under warranty. I would use this computer to send in online job applications, look up addresses for invitations for my wedding later this summer, keep in touch with family and friends, and, of course, check out my favorite blogs such as “The Spohrs are Multiplying.” I would also use it for looking up recipes to make food to feed my future husband with and shop for birthday and Christmas presents for my family and friends. I just need a new computer because my old one is dying a very slow and painful death and I cannot afford to replace it at the moment.

Lori R says:
I would use it to to replace the ancient desk-top I have been using. My son used the desktop while in grade school and is now in college using a laptop and “I inherited” his old one cause paying tuition and getting myself a laptop do not compute. The email, bill paying and blog and news reading I do would be so much easier and actually fun with the HP Pavillion dml.

This would be great for blogging, travel, and entering PVR’s on the road for work!
saupre says:
I would use the computer to detail our adventures living in Paris while my husband writes the book he’ll be researching there.

My husband is constantly deployed. As in 5 years out of the last 11. He is about to go onto deployment #5 to the Middle East, so communication is key. Since it is a smaller, it would be perfect for my kids to have an electronic link to their dad, and not have to be linked up to my computer.

Bethy C says:
I would be passing this amazing computer along to my 16 year old son. He is an amazing athlete and it appears our life will be changing drastically next year. He has the opportunity to train with an amazing group but along with that comes a family sacrifice. He’d be traveling 4 hours a day not to mention the time spent training. He’d be using this computer to do schoolwork during his travel time because his education comes 1st.
Alisha says:
I am the mother of 2 youngens (age 27 months and 13 months both low-birth weight and 1 later-preemie) and am crazy, but looking to be pregnant again. I was on bedrest with the second one for 8 weeks and gloriously made it to 36 weeks, but didn’t have a laptop, so my days were filled with America’s Next Top Model and the like. Oh, I so NEED this! My husband is always on our desktop selling on Amazon, downloading music, doing crosswords, etc. I LOVE to spend time reading my favorite blogs (yours being one of them), which I rarely get to do with the computer hog around. Also, I have a very active 2 yr. old and don’t find a lot of time to sit in our dining room away from her to use our desktop. Mommy guilt ruins it every single time. Chris says:
I want one!! I would use it check FB and blogs in the living room at night and to take with me when I go places, instead of my 20 lb. Toshiba.
Or I would give it to my mother for using in bed for reading and email.
but nah, i’d keep it for myself.
Amy D. says:

Heather says:
I bought my desktop waaay back in 2005, and even though it basically serves the purposes I need it for–work stuff, blogging, email, social networks, uploading pics of my toddler–it won’t *gasp* let me install the Sims 3, my favorite escape, because it’s just. too. old. Tragic, I know. Oh, and how decadent would it be to actually use a laptop in bed?! I can hardly imagine! Oh please, pick me!!!

2 years ago, when I was almost 38, I finally left the wrong relationship and froze my eggs in hopes of having a family some day with the right man. I moved into an adorable little apartment in Venice Beach that I picked out for myself. A few months later, my big, safe-yet-soul-sucking corporate sales company downsized and I was left without a job. Well, I volunteered for the severance package because I was misierable and needed to take this chance. Since then I have struggled with figuring out the right next move, made tons of progress in terms of discovering myself, making new friends, and letting go of the old “restrictive” me that was trying to fit in with the wrong life…and just this past week landed an awesome freelance marketing position with a phenomenal small business that I love. If I won this little guy, I would use it to trick out my “office” in my car so I could track accounts in between appointments. And it would make me so happy!!!
MrsBott4u says:
I’d use it for my second job as a proofreader Oh, and to keep viewing those pics of the Marvelous Maddie and the Amazing Annie!!
Just Jen says:
Honestly, I’d give it to my husband for his birthday, for his business. And it’s a milestone year: 40.
He’s been unemployed since July of ’10. When the job offers didn’t come in, he’s started his own business in January of this year. Being your own boss isn’t easy. We don’t have a lot. I am a co-founder of a nonprofit that puts the “non” in nonprofit. With two kids in school and a mortgage, his birthday won’t be the big bash I had dreamed I’d be able to throw him. But winning this little number would be awesome.

Bekki says:
I’d use it for photo processing, as my only computer is a 9 year old desktop PC. A sturdy workhorse that has never let me down, but still, it’s slow as old people F#*&-ing. A shiny new portable computer would also let me get a website going for my photography-on-the-side projects, and give me a chance to expand my work. I would also taunt my best friend halfway across the country mercilessly as he is a bit of techie and has to have the new in-vogue gadget, and I rarely get to one-up him in that respect.
Stephenie says:
Our desktop is on it’s last leg and my son really needs something reliable for homework and projects….so I would give it to him.
Come on random computer thingy, pick me!!
