The Natural History Museum in Los Angeles has a seasonal butterfly exhibit that I’ve wanted to visit for years. The Butterfly Pavilion has more than 53 different butterfly and moth species flying about, plus tons of gorgeous plants. I thought walking through the space while butterflies flitted around me sounded magical, and I knew Annabel would think so, too.

She is now asking for a pet butterfly.
C says:
I can’t tell whether she says “callapatters” or “catterpatters,” but either way, ADORABLE. My husband & I just visited theNatural HIstory museum with our 8-year old niece and the Butterfly Garden was her favorite part!
Beth says:
You should totally do this with her –

(search Insect Lore Butterfly Garden on Amazon if the link doesn’t show)
We raise butterflies every year (we have 5 caterpillars right now actually!) and it is so much fun. First get that habitat and it comes with information on ordering the caterpillars…they come pretty quickly. Definitely worth it!
Beth says:
You need to grow your own butterflies!! We do it every year (we have 5 caterpillars growing right now, actually)… Search on Amazon for the Insect Lore Butterfly garden… You get the habitat first, and mail away (or do it online even) information for the live caterpillars to be delivered to you. It is so easy, and the kids love it. Annie would have so much fun watching them go through all the changes, and hatch into pretty butterflies! You can then release them outside
ColleenMN says:
I’ll send some milkweed and you can get to work on that pet butterfly!
Lanie says:
Annie is an adorable butterfly – love her practice wings! She is so smart too (who knew little einsteins teaches about caterpillars & butterflies :-)). Looks like it was magical for all!
Rachel says:
Thinkgeek.com has a butterfly in a jar, that looks realistic (a friend has one). Here’s a link:

Brandi says:
Yall should definitely get her a butterfly kit at home. They go through the whole process and it is so neat to watch. WE did it with my oldest and it was an awesome educational experience for everyone.
brooke says:
i called them callapidders as a kid, too! so cute.
Jen says:
I think she’d love “Fancy Nancy, Bonjour Butterfly.” She’d probably love any of the Fancy Nancy books.
Christina says:
Cute! You could buy a butterfly bush or some other butterfly-attracting plant/shrub/flower and tell her that all the butterflies who come to the yard are her pet butterflies… they’re just outdoor pets.
Jessica says:
One summer, we bought two caterpillars and then let them go in the yard when they were butterflies. I highly recommend it! It was a great experience and I’m glad we did it.
Paula says:
“I know catterpidders become butterflies!”
And she learned it from Baby Einstein.
That? Had me LMAO!
Meg says:
Annie IS a flower. A big, beautiful, growing-so-quickly bright flower.
Jess says:
Oh, she is too cute! I adore butterfly gardens.
Question–where did you get her adorable dress? My daughter is just a bit older and she would love it. Let me know if you can!
PS–we bought one of those butterfly kits for our daughter last year (where you keep the caterpillars until they turn into butterflies) and she adored it. Might be fun for your little girl.
Heather says:
Her dress was in one of her monthly Wittlebee.com boxes! The tag is Violet + Moss, and she got it last year. I hope that helps!!!
Jess says:
Bummer that it’s last year but I love that label! Thanks for answering
Liz says:
That looks so cool! I really wish I’d known about that before the last week of August…definitely will have to go there next year. There’s no way I will be able to get up there before it closes this year.
I really love seeing you all in the videos and hearing your voices. Thank you for sharing.
Elissa says:
They had this at a county fair last year. There may or may not have been an incident where my then 2 year old had a butterfly land on her heard and she grabbed it in terror and threw it on the ground. Thank goodness the butterfly was just stunned and eventually got up and flew away.
