This weekend a good stretch of Los Angeles’ infamous 405 freeway will be shut down from Friday night to Monday morning for construction. Our local news media has dubbed this “Carmageddon.” It has the potential to be a total traffic nightmare, but Cal Trans and the news have been warning us for MONTHS this was coming. The closed section of the 405 is the closest freeway to us, so while we aren’t exactly stuck, getting out of our bubble of town would be a bit of a hassle. I’m hoping that everyone will stay away from West Los Angeles so that it’s easy for me to get to the waffle place and the beach. It’s the important things.
What do you think the odds are that a Cal Trans worker will let me take a picture of Annie in her car on the closed freeway?
How cool would that be?
When we sat for my nephews and niece a couple weekends ago, Annabel and Michaela played this game where they tried to make as much noise as possible. They were really good at it. But what cracked me up was whenever Michaela made noise, Annie would start dancing to the rhythm. It was adorable.
They should totally be an act on one of those America’s Got Talent shows.

That video could be in the dictionary under “partners in crime.” Can’t wait to see what they get up to in future.
Kate @ UpsideBackwards says:
In our TV news they kept saying the closure would be a disaster “for Hollywood”, as if Hollywood =LA. Kind of odd, I thought! I hope the weekend is a nice, peaceful one at home for you, with no emergencies requiring you to get anywhere!

I wonder how far south the closer goes? I need to go from Mission Viejo to San Pedro this weekend. I’m thinking I should just take PCH all the way up.
Those dancing babies are adorable
Heather says:
You’ll be ok! I believe it only goes as far south as the 10.
Mommy says:
Those girls are so freaking cute, it is unreal. Also, I am in love with that kitchen!

In St. Louis a few years ago they shut down sections of a major highway for TWO YEARS to rebuild. But after it was done they had a day before it opened so everyone could walk and ride bikes on the new highway. It was pretty fun, but cold since it was December.
Nanette says:
That would be so much fun!
Kristin says:
They are definitely better than some of the acts on America’s Got Talent.
BTW, it’s not just the local media calling it Carmageddon. I’m here on the East coast and I heard about it on the radio this morning.
Rebecca says:
I just don’t understand why closing a stretch of roadway for just one weekend is such a terrible thing? Stay home, use detours……….stay home. It’s just one weekend.
We had a long stretch of interstate closed down for months around here (along with other construction projects on other interstates thoughout that time). I think it was a stretch of 64/40/61 (one road three names). I think it was closed for a couple of years.
Heather says:
It’s a pretty giant and vital stretch of freeway. It connects north LA County with all the coastal cities. It will put a lot of strain on the canton roads, and getting to the airport will be very hard.
And we won’t even speak of the mess that would happen if it doesn’t reopen in time!
Mom again says:
Because of the mountains, there aren’t a lot of detours. Entire neighborhoods (the size of small towns elsewhere) sometimes only have a freeway entrance or two and if both of those are on the closed stretch, and nonfreeway ways out of the area only lead to other neighborhoods/shopping districts which are on the closed stretch then the detours will be uselessly backed up. Even if the backstreets led anywhere useful, they could never handle the volume of a normal days traffic–the freeways barely do as it is. Best bet: sleep in, stay home.
Jen says:
Are you really going to try and go to the beach this weekend? Crazy….. Ha. I am in San Diego and heading to a town north of LA about 2 hours. I usually take the 15 to the 10 to the 210 to the 5 but today, I will be heading through the desert and am avoiding LA at all costs….
Heather says:
well, it depends on the weather. But the beach is only two miles away so it’s not hard!
JDaniel4's Mom says:
My son is a dangerous driver in his Cozy Coupe! He takes over the driveway.
Neeroc says:
Oh I hope you do ask about getting a pic! And dude, they just mentioned carmaggedon on the news – in Ottawa!

I just love reading your blog. I am a first time commenter (sp?) to your blog, but have been reading it since around April. I was about as far along in my pregnancy as you were when you found out that your water had broke. I was going though some problems with my own at that time and one of the doctors that I went to said that they wanted to do a test that one of the risks was that my water would break and I was terrified because I didn’t know if my baby would make it. Fortunately, the risk “went” away and I didn’t have to do the test, but I was searching on the internet for other babies that had been born prematurely at around 27-30 weeks and I found a video of your beautiful Maddie. Not realizing that she had passed away, I clicked on it and it was of the video that you played at her memorial service. I was so moved by it that I had to know more. At the bottom of the description, it had a link to your blog and it was the entry of her memorial service information. So I have spent the last several months going back and reading more about sweet little Maddie and more recently about her little sister Annie. I’m sorry that I wrote a book in the comments, but I can’t remember for the life of me what your email is, I know that you have left it in your entries several times. I’m sending you all the best and will more than likely be commenting again. Thanks again for sharing your daughters with the world.

I drove from Stockton to Fresno on 99 on Monday and every single overhead sign notified me to not even think of going to LA for the week-end. The powers that be are really doing a job of getting the word out.

This news story was on the UK breakfast news this morning! So it’s being talked about on the other side of the world!

haha! That’s awesome! The girls have rhythm!

Well, I’m a dork. I posted a comment and totally forgot to finish it, lol I was going to say that those two little girls are so cute and I remember when my best friend’s daughter was that age and “danced” to any sound. It’s so cute when they do it and unfortunately doesn’t last long so enjoy it as long as she does it and keep the cute videos coming!
