Annie sings songs all day long. ALL DAY LONG. And really, it’s pretty stinking cute. She has even gotten to the point where she’s started making up her own songs, or changing the words to songs she already knows (example: the lyrics are “all my friends are different,” but she’ll sing, “all my friends are…REILLY!” or “all my friends are…APPLES!”) She’ll come up to me at any given point in the day and say, “Mama, SING!” Since she is repeating everything, I’ve taken the opportunity to sing educational songs…or, educational SONG. I really only know one.

The 2.5-year-old girl for whom I nanny is really into singing, too. Yesterday, she pulled out the “Scooby Doo” theme song, but it went something like, “Scooby Dooby Doo, where are you? We’ve got some work to do tonight in this place.” I sang along with her version. She’s started singing songs I don’t know, so it’s like that SNL skit on Weekend Update where one of the people is making up a song, and the other is pretending they know it. It’s fun.
Greg says:
Now that is sweet. Oh, I wish I could roll the clock back and relive those years!
Meyli says:
Yay!! That was great
I’ll totally hire you for parties – you will be paid in cake, ice cream, and play-time with my dog . I think Annie will say yes

Kay says:
Cue video! That’s great that you are not only singing educational songs but videotaping them as well. Little kids love to watch videos of themselves and will look at them over and over again.
I layer all of my daughters videos with educational content – adding words and letters – “Grandma” to the video of her grandma etc so that she learns the words. I also add “A, B, Cs” to her ABC song.
She seems to learn better from real life experience than from generic Flashcards. That’s probably why there’s so many toys and apps now that allow parents to customize their kids experiences.
