When I was a bartender I was constantly asked, “Make me your favorite drink.” Since handing people a beer wasn’t usually what they intended, I set out to find an easy drink. I eventually developed a sangria drink that I’d make at the beginning of my shift, and it always was gone by the end. Whenever I make it at parties (like at my housewarming) I am always asked for the recipe. So, here you go!

Red Wine Sangria

You will need:

red wine sangria

A bottle (750 mL) of red wine (I like Cabernet Sauvignon, but any red will do)
2 cups of club soda
1 shot (1 1/2 oz) brandy
1 lemon
1 orange
1 apple
1 lime (optional)
1/3 cup sugar, to taste
1 pitcher or larger drink container

cut oranges

Slice your oranges into eighths.

squeeze out juices

Squeeze the juice from each orange slice into your pitcher.

cut into small pieces

Once you’ve squeezed out the juice, cut each orange slice into bite-sized pieces.

put pieces into pitcher

Put the orange pieces into your pitcher.

slice, squeeze, and chop lemons

Repeat with your lemons.

Put the lemon slices in your pitcher.

slice your apple

Cut your apple into eighths.

chop into pieces

Chop your apple into small pieces, then add to your pitcher.

add club soda

Add two cups of club soda to the pitcher.

add brandy

Add a shot of brandy.

pour your wine into the pitcher

Pour your red wine into the pitcher. I use Cabernet Sauvignon because it’s what I personally like. Any red will do. I also use cheap red wine because I add so much to it. Don’t waste the good stuff.

add sugar

Add your sugar. Now, I suggest 1/3 of a cup because I like my sangria somewhat sweet. If you want it to be sweeter, add more sugar. If you don’t like sweet sangria, add the sugar slowly, tasting as you go. Know that as your sangria marinates, it will get sweeter.

mix well

Use a large spoon and mix well.

The colors are so pretty and festive for fall!

Such pretty fall colors!

refrigerate

Refrigerate your sangria. Now, you CAN drink it immediately, but it’s MUCH better if you make your sangria in advance and let it sit. If I’m having a party, I will make it a full 24 hours in advance. The flavors mix and the sugar soaks in and it’s sooooo much better.

Red Wine Sangria

Put your sangria in a tall, clear glass to serve. Bonus points if you use a straw.

enjoy!

Kick back and enjoy!
