Our new house has a bananas kitchen. We love spending time in it – in fact, after we got the keys, the first thing we bought for the house were stools for the kitchen island. It’s a great hang out.
Yeah yeah, I know, a kitchen is more than just a place to sit and eat. Someone has to actually MAKE the food. As I mentioned before, Mike dared me to cook something in the kitchen once a week – like ACTUALLY cook, not just microwave up a Lean Cuisine. I accepted his challenge for two reasons: One, I rarely turn down a dare, and Two, I really want to learn how to cook.
I didn’t go crazy, though – for my first attempt at making something in the kitchen, I stuck with something I know – mixed drinks. After I graduated from college I worked as a bartender at a beach bar. There were a bunch of specialty drinks on the menu (which have since been retired), but this one is my favorite: The Hula Girl.
You need:
two frozen bananas OR banana puree mix
coconut mix (I love Coco Lopez, but piña colada mix works too)
rum (coconut flavored is best)
Kahlua (or cold coffee if you want to make it non-alcoholic)
chocolate syrup and non-frozen banana for garnish
ice
Makes four 8-oz drinks
Chop up your bananas into chunks:
Pour your cream of coconut (or piña colada mix) into the blender (approx. 15 ounces):
Add your booze (I add a shot of kahlua and coconut flavored rum, or 1 1/2 ounces, per person, but alcohol is all about personal preference) or your coffee if you want a non-alcoholic drink:
Next, add your chopped up bananas and ice to the blender:
Blend!
If you’re feeling fancy, slice a non-frozen banana and drizzle chocolate on it for garnish:
Pour your drink into glasses, add the banana and some chocolate for prettiness:
Drink!

I love you Heather! That’s my kind of cooking! After the hellacious week I’ve had, I put your recipe on the menu for dinner tonight. Can’t wait for further culinary adventures at casa Spohr! Happy new home & kitchen!
Lisa says:
Oh yum, that looks delicious. I’m definitely going to give this one a try.
Heidi says:
That drink sounds like just my kind of drink. I will have to try it.
That being said, I wasn’t much of a cook until we bought our own house and I actually started trying to cook. Now my friends think I’m pretty good! My advise is to start simple and remember recipes are pretty simple if you stick with them closely and go step by step. There are so many amazing cooking blogs now with great step by step photos that you can’t go wrong. MUCH better way to start than jumping right into something fancy! Before you know it you’ll be whipping up all kinds of great foods in your gorgeous new kitchen!
Rebecca says:
I don’t drink but this sounds absolutely delicious!

It does sound fantastic, Heather, and my husband loves banana flavored drinks. I will have to try this some time. Check out the Pioneer Woman’s website. She has great pictures of the various steps for all of the dishes that she has recipes for, and she even has a new show coming on tomorrow morning on The Food Network (about 8:30 a.m. Pacific time).

It looks like you are cooking in the new kitchen. Chopping, mixing and a recipe count as cooking in my book. The drink sounds great too. Take care.

Check out the Pioneer Woman Cooks – great recipes with step-by-step photos.
Your drink sounds yummy!

If you put an apron on while you blend then you can call it cooking.
I am typically a “go big or go home” type of person when it comes to new endeavors. However, my advice on cooking is to “walk before you run.”. Starting with beverages is perfect!!
I tried a new soup this week. It was easy plus light and healthy!

I love your kitchen! What is the stainless steel appliance under the island counter?

I have one question: Where did you get that amazing blender with the spigot? I must have.

Heather,
I think you’re amazing, and inspirational! I’ve been following your blog for years but never commented, because I was waiting for the perfect moment. I’m a former-investigative-journalist-turned-poet, so I’ve had difficulty narrowing down when I should pounce on the comments section. But! Clearly, the making-mixed-drinks post was the appropriate time for my first response. And anyway, what I want to say is that you’re a woman of vision and hilarity, and I think you rock!
Jen L. says:
WOW, that looks outstanding and involves all my favorite flavors! Have fun experimenting in your new kitchen! Just remember–recipes are usually just suggestions. Taste a lot and have fun!
AmazingGreis says:
Yum! I must make it, or you know, when I move in with you I’ll just wait for you to make it.
Also, I need that blender!
Erin says:
When my family heads to Mexico for vacation the place we stay calls this drink (Or something VERY SIMILAR) a “Chocolate Monkey”
I am very happy to have the parent and kid friendly version!
Thanks a heap!

Baby steps on the cooking front – there are lots of genuinely simple things out there.
Omlette is super simple – crack eggs, mix eggs, fry eggs.
Simple pasta sauces are good.
Rosti is tasty, simple (& impressive!). Grate potato, dry it off, squish into a patty in fry pan, fry, flip, fry – voila!
Megan says:
OMG. It’s 11 p.m. on a Sunday and I need to make this RIGHT NOW.
By the way, I never thought I’d get a recipe from your blog
