Our new house has a bananas kitchen. We love spending time in it – in fact, after we got the keys, the first thing we bought for the house were stools for the kitchen island. It’s a great hang out.

Yeah yeah, I know, a kitchen is more than just a place to sit and eat. Someone has to actually MAKE the food. As I mentioned before, Mike dared me to cook something in the kitchen once a week – like ACTUALLY cook, not just microwave up a Lean Cuisine. I accepted his challenge for two reasons: One, I rarely turn down a dare, and Two, I really want to learn how to cook.

I didn’t go crazy, though – for my first attempt at making something in the kitchen, I stuck with something I know – mixed drinks. After I graduated from college I worked as a bartender at a beach bar. There were a bunch of specialty drinks on the menu (which have since been retired), but this one is my favorite: The Hula Girl.

You need:

two frozen bananas OR banana puree mix
coconut mix (I love Coco Lopez, but piña colada mix works too)
rum (coconut flavored is best)
Kahlua (or cold coffee if you want to make it non-alcoholic)
chocolate syrup and non-frozen banana for garnish
ice
Makes four 8-oz drinks

Chop up your bananas into chunks:

Pour your cream of coconut (or piña colada mix) into the blender (approx. 15 ounces):

Add your booze (I add a shot of kahlua and coconut flavored rum, or 1 1/2 ounces, per person, but alcohol is all about personal preference) or your coffee if you want a non-alcoholic drink:

add the kahlua

Next, add your chopped up bananas and ice to the blender:

If you’re feeling fancy, slice a non-frozen banana and drizzle chocolate on it for garnish:
