Leaning A Little More

by Heather on August 31, 2009

in Binky, pregnancy is...fun?, stuff better left unsaid

*Thank you all SO MUCH for the overwhelming response to my last post. I am slowly going through, making notes, and I will get back to everyone that emailed or left a comment. If you have any more suggestions, keep ‘em coming – the symposium isn’t until November. You all are AMAZING and I couldn’t do this without you!*

After failing to get a completely decisive gender shot last week, Mike and I were resigned to waiting until Binky’s next ultrasound. I am really looking forward to knowing for sure who is growing inside me. But I’ll take a dozen more inconclusive gender ultrasounds if it means everything else is showing up perfectly.

So I told myself I was going to be patient about the whole thing, even though patience isn’t one of the skills I list on my resume. And then someone who totally does not read celebritybabyblog.com sent me a link to a home gender prediction kit. We looked at the website for five seconds before Mike said, “I’m going to go buy one of those!”

Once he was back with the kit, we poured over the directions. There, in bold letters, it said, “Use ONLY first morning urine.” It was noon. That was going to be a long time to wait. Then Mike said, “too bad you could never go eight hours without peeing.”

It was a throw down. Challenge? Accepted!!

And so it began, the Great Pee Abstention of 2009. Mike honestly didn’t think I could go eight hours without urinating, but I knew I could. The thing is, I have an iron bladder and a steel will. Pregnancy has done nothing to change this. So despite his best efforts to trick me into peeing by shaking water bottles and talking about waterfalls, I ate and drank like normal and went eight hours without breaking a sweat. Hurray!

I cracked open the test kit, and was presented with a cup to “catch my sample” with, a syringe, and a test tube with crystals on the bottom

inside the test kit

the crystals that interact with the urine
flavor crystals!

The test tube had two sides, the boy side and the girl side. To provide samples of color variation, I guess.

girl side, with example of girl color Boy side, with example of boy color

After gathering my sample, I pulled 20 mL into the syringe and put it in the test tube. I then swirled the contents for ten seconds, put it down, and waited. After ten minutes, the mixture would either become green, indicating boy, or orange, indicating girl. You know, the typical colors of boys and girls (not).

Ten minutes passed to find Mike and I in the bathroom, looking closely at our results.

Orange, the color of girls...

So according to the test kit, we’re having a girl. It only claims to be 80% effective, so we’re obviously not running out to buy girl stuff, but in conjunction with what Dr. Risky says, we’re feeling a little more like we’re having another daughter. And it feels pretty good.

I tried this with my first daughter and it said boy. LOL
It also essentially exploded when I added the urine, so that could be why it was wrong! LOL It immediately started foaming and shooting out the top!

If I remember correctly, it tends to be more correct with girl predictions than with boy predictions!

Good luck!!!

Reply

9 Heather August 31, 2009 at 9:50 am

That happened with this one, too!!! I totally forgot to put that in. But YES the foaming and such on OMG the SMELL.

Now that Binky knows you took the test, she’ll probably be more cooperative at the next ultrasound with giving a decisive view. … Just reading about your 8 hour pee-hold has made me need to pee! … I know you will do great at the symposium! No one could ask for a better representative than you. … (((Hugs)))

i thought i couldn’t do an 8 hour stretch during this pregnancy. no way. no how.
until we went camping last week.
and it was 38 degrees outside of my sleeping bag.
and i heard something outside the tent.
and i would have to walk a 1/2 mile to get to a semi decent restroom.
eventually, the must-pee-now sensation dissipated. except i only had pee dreams for the next 3 hours. weird.

My “babies” are now 36, 34, and 31, so it’s been a while. They were born before sonograms but after the horse & buggy, so we had to resort to old wives’ tales to calculate gender before we actually had a peek.
I recall a test that was common among my friends and contemporaries using Drano. Add it to the pregnant woman’s urine, and in a few minutes it would change color (pink for a girl, blue for a boy), revealing the baby’s gender. The crystals in your test kit sure remind me of Drano crystals….could that science have survived this long?
Nevermind. I had two sons first, and on my third try I used the “test” for the first time. I was happily surprised when it predicted this time I was carrying a girl! (It was RIGHT!) But in the case of our test, we agreed that the results were usually about 50% effective.

Reply

20 Joan McArdle November 4, 2010 at 6:37 pm

In 1980 I did the drano test and it was a reddish brown color and I had a girl. (Already had 2 boys) however, I had friends and others do the test and kept up with it and it was 80% accurate – blackish blueish for boy. We always doubled the urine (1 tblspoon crystal drano to 2 tblspoons of urine) and most definitely glass container and take outside – smells back and it will fizz and foam and the bottom liquid is what you go by. Usually if its a lighter greenish its a boy. If you have kidney problems it may not be accurate.

It’s “The Call” by Regina Spektor. Here’s a link to the YouTube video, with lyrics.

One day, while driving, it made me think of Maddie. You’ll see why. I started crying that ugly cry and freaking out my kids, which is always fun. But then, toward the end, I started thinking about Binky. You’ll see why. And everything changed.

I love you, Heather. I consider it a blessing that we are both experimenting with bladder control at the same time.

You need to do the Chinese gender calaner too. My friend and I both did it and it said we were both having girls (different times) and we both did. They say it is 98% accurate.

When I was pregnant with Maddie, it said girl. I had a bunch of friends pregnant in the next year and every prediction was right. Then, the year after that, every single friend got a wrong prediction. It says boy for me this time, so we’ll see!

When I was pregnant with my first it said boy as well. Our U/S tech told us it was a girl. Then at 7 mo preg, my friend found out her “girl” was a boy. I was paranoid enough that I went gender neutral on everything. When my daughter arrived my first question was, “is it still a girl?”

I hope for you a looooooooong big and gigantic pregnancy. I looked at bunch of your nicu videos the other day. Incredible. You are going to love the run of the mill birth experience.

Love you.

I can’t wait to know for sure! And even though I know you would love a baby boy just as much as a baby girl just as I would be so happy for you if you had either, my hopes are for the latter. For purely selfish reasons of my own, it’s easier to craft for a little girl. =)

I, too, have 2 baby girls. Today was the first time I ever went through all their stuff… I finally packed up *9* bags & boxes of onesies, bibs, sleepers, sweet outfits, hats, shoes… They were also miracle babies, 15 months apart, and I hated the thought of getting rid of anything.

As I packed up today, I cried some.. thinking of what used to be, and then of course, my heart turned to you. I hope the 17 precious months of memories will comfort you as precious Binky keeps giving hope. xo

We did one of these with our pregnancy and it said ”boy”…and we had a boy. My understanding of the test is that if you somehow screw it up and “swish” it wrong,or pee at the wrong time, etc.. the error result is a boy. So by it saying girl, I’d say you have a pretty good chance of having a girl! Congratulations!!!!!!

I never knew with any of my children. First time around that was fine but second time when I was having twins I WANTED TO KNOW! Would have snapped up that kit in a second.

(When I was pregnant here in BC it was illegal to tell the parents what sex baby they were having.) I think they feared ‘oops’ lawsuits and the risk of some individuals aborting on the basis of sex).

Congratulations on whatever you are having! So excited for you all.
