I can’t get my camera (a-hem my mom’s camera) to do this. I read the shutter speed has to be quick and the aperature has to be open big, right? When I set the shutter speed for quick the picture comes out dark.

Try pumping up your ISO. If the picture is dark, your film might not be sensitive enough to the light!
