Sickie *updated*

in no one's in the hospital, the famous Madeline

Maddie has started making a new face, where she opens her mouth as wide as she can. It looks like she’s about to scream, or about to throw up.

crazy mouth!

She is totally silent when she makes this face, which cracks me up every time.

This morning Maddie was whimpering in her sleep, and then when she woke up she was especially clingy. Never a good sign. Since then she’s been sneezing and coughing and sweaty off and on. I’ve been hoping that it’s her top teeth coming in, but when her bottom teeth came in she wasn’t like this. And oh, the snot. It terrifies me. Poop, barf, those are nothing. Snot bubbles? GAG.

So we’re wrapped up here on the couch, cuddling and wiping away boogers (GAG) and just trying to keep Maddie comfortable. She looks so sad, poor thing. Well, sad when she’s isn’t smiling for the camera. Little ham.

smiling even when she's sick

Fingers crossed she doesn’t get worse. Our new health insurance information hasn’t arrived. Typical.

updated 12/04 at 12:15 am: Poor little Maddie isn’t feeling any better. She spent the entire day curled up in bed with me. She had a fever off and on, threw up a couple times, and coughed and sneezed all day. Mike and I moved the oxygen rocket into our bedroom (no small task, the thing is HUGE and HEAVY), and I totally Macgyvered an oxygen mask for her after she pulled her nasal cannula off her face. Her respiratory rate is faster than it usually is (that’s how many breaths she takes per minute) and her heart rate is up, thanks to her off and on fever. I spoke with Dr. Looove during office hours, and we’ll be bringing Maddie in to see her first thing.

Fingers crossed.

Totally – you can tells she feels icky in the second & third picture. She still looks adorable, though, which is more than I can say for myself when I’m sick :-P Get well soon, Maddie!

I love it when they discover a new face. One of my boys would do something like the silent smile, except he would also flex his arms so hard that he would shake! We called it his “tough guy” look. Sadly, he doesn’t do it anymore… On to new things. Enjoy each look while it is there!

Please keep the second picture for your records. So when she is older and whiny, you can whip it out, and say “SEE? You CAN be sick and still in good spirits!!”

OH NO. Colds are NO FUN. No fun at all.

That clip in her hair is to die for. So cute.

And she looks totally fine in the second picture and totally sick in the next one. Funny. Or not.

Those jammies look familiar. And adorable. :0)

Poor baby, she does look pretty miserable in that last photo. And yeah, ok, I agree that baby snot is pretty awful, but compared to barf? No contest. Wait until she’s off formula and drinking whole milk, and the barf comes up like stinky cottage cheese. Seriously, grossest thing EVER. I get the sympathy heaves every time. Ugh.

Hope she’s feeling better soon, and that neither you nor Mike catch it!

P.S. The silent-open-mouth is hi-larious.

Oh the sick baby eyes are so sad. I hope whatever it is, it’s short lived.

I kinda love the shouting look.

Hi Heath,

I’m so sorry she’s sick. I hope she feels better REALLY soon. That’s horrible…for all three of you.

But, I have to say, I LOVE the open mouth pose. It reminds me of all of my drunk college pictures. I’m sure we’ll see her doing this in 16 or so years with even more frequency (because let’s not kid, Maddie WON’T be 21 when she starts drinking like the best of them.)

Love you and hope your house is a little more focused on open mouths than snot soon!

The first picture is cracking me up. My daughter used to make the same face – but to complete strangers. As in, we’re rolling down the aisles of Target, Nicola spots a man walking towards her and *blam* there’s the face. Although she coupled it with a tongue. She was always perplexed when strangers didn’t interact with her.

When she was 10 mos my husband took a picture very similar to this and used it as a pattern for a pumpkin. Not a jack-o-lantern, a nic-o-lantern.

She’s such a love. Hope she feels better soon!
