Tonight is the first night I’ve ever had before the birth of one of my children. Well, obviously there were nights before the births of Madeline and Annabel… the thing is, I didn’t know they were the nights before. On the day of Madeline’s birth I only found out she was to be born via emergency c-section about an hour before it happened, and on Annabel’s birth day we’d only gone to the hospital to get Heather checked out because she was feeling tenderness in her stomach – not because we thought we’d be having a baby! So having a night to reflect and prepare is a new thing.
On a not-so-deep level, the great thing about this is that I will be able to get myself properly groomed for such a monumental occasion. On Maddie’s birth day I had to sprint to the hospital having not showered, and on both girls’ birth days I’d failed to shave. Things will be different tomorrow. I will shave, shower, and look almost civilized.
On a deeper level, though, the thing I appreciate the most is that I can prepare myself for what I will be experiencing. Both of the girls’ births were stressful and hurried, so my memories of them are not nearly as clear as I wish they were. Tomorrow I plan to take a lot of deep breaths, relax, and take it all in. I want to remember as much of the day as possible, especially since it will be the last time I ever see one of my children enter the world.
It hasn’t happened yet, but I’ve got a feeling tomorrow will be one of the best days of my life… right up there with these two:
November 11, 2007 – Madeline Alice
January 22, 2010 – Annabel Violet
I can’t wait to add a third photo for May 30th, 2013.

Mike,
I am so glad you get to experience a “night before.” You and Heather are amazing parents, and I am so glad that you get to experience a non-emergency c-section, freshly shaved and showered, for this little guy.
It is very clear from the way Heather writes about you are an amazing father and loving and supportive partner. I am sending you the best of wishes for your son’s birthday.

Tomorrow will be my youngest child’s 25th birthday. As you welcome The Acrobat, we will be thinking of your family and only hope that he brings you the joy that our Dana Banana has brought us. Somehow, I know he will!! We can’t wait to hear that he is here, and well, and that his mommy is holding him, with relief, and a huge, healthy smile on her face…Mike standing by….so, so happy for his family’s good fortune. Hugs to Annabel, and the grandparents, too! Let the fun begin!!

Have to say, you look great in those other 2 photos for being so “unprepared”…and I, too, cannot wait to see the 3rd set of pictures to be added to the ones above! And to finally learn your son’s name–unless you’ve just decided to go with “The Acrobat” (downside is a name like that seems as though it may limit his career options–hard to imagine that off-stage voice announcing “…our President of these United States, Mr. The Acrobat Spohr!…” The names you went with the first 2 times are far more presidential.)
Anyway–hope you and Heather and Annie (who must be thrilled!!!) get some good rest, in addition to time to reflect. This may be your last night of uninterrupted sleep for quite some time, so relish that too.
Will be obsessively checking for news of the wee one’s birth!!!

Mike… I am so excited for you and Heather!!! I’d say for you to get one last good full night’s rest, but something tells me that you are probably wide awake. Can’t wait to read of The Acrobat’s safe and sound arrival – all the best to you from Vienna, Austria!

Goosebumps. I’m so glad you get to experience a bit of normalcy this time. I identify with this so completely. After having triplets born at 28 weeks, when our youngest was born, even though he was a bit early we knew the night before. There were no frantic searches for the video camera and the morning of his birth was as calm as prepping for a c-section can be.
Mommy says:
Sending lots of love to all of you. I am thrilled for you to meet your baby boy!!!
