There are rites of passage that every little girl must go through on her way to becoming a women. Since I’m a dude I’m not really sure what those things are, but I can tell you one – totally rocking her first Super Bowl party!
Last year Annie slept through the Super Bowl (on account of being a newborn and all), so Heather and I knew we had to do it up this year. Luckily Heather got an offer from Fresh & Easy to deliver some free snacks for the big day, so we said “Yes, please” and invited over our friends Matt, Leslie, and their cutie-pie son Austin to help us chow down. Before they arrived, however, I decided our place was lacking a little ambiance so I ran across the street to the market to get a giant Super Bowl balloon (yes, I am that guy).
Unfortunately, on the way out of the market a gust of wind blew and yanked the balloon off the string it was attached to. This tragedy happened right in front of a sorority girl straight out of “Legally Blonde.” She covered her mouth and said, “Oh. My. God. That is like totally the saddest thing I have like ever seen.”
I grimaced. Elle Woods then got all indignant and said, “You know what you need to do? Go back in there and ask for another one. Because that balloon was so not tied on well.” So you know what? I did.
At home again I started cookin’ up the Fresh & Easy food and it was good! Michael and Andy dug the chicken wings:
But Dwight was more about the chips and guac:
Annie got to eat some Super Bowl food too, but it was of the baby food variety and thus a little less exciting.
Soon the show started and Annie LOVED Lea Michele’s rendition of “God Bless America” (she is a huge a Glee fan after all)…
…but she did NOT dig the National Anthem. I could tell she was thinking, “I’m a baby who says like three words but even I know that lady got it wrong!”
After the game started Annie and Austin weren’t so into it…
…but when the score got close Annie felt the tension. In the end it was too much for her:
All in all I think she pretty much nailed her first Super Bowl party, don’t you?
As for those other girl rites of passage, Annie is going to have to ask her Mom.

made me smile.
so much cute! glad it was a happy football day.
cheers!
m says:
No picture of the balloon? You had me curious! I’ve never seen a Super Bowl balloon!
I love Annie’s dress, by the way!
Mike says:
The balloon is actually the football one in the last photo with me and Annie!
Heather says:
My 3 year old had the same reaction to the singing as Annabel! She cheered for Lea Michelle and covered her ears for Cristina! LOL
Heather says:
My fiancee is certain that given enough exposure to football, our girls could become huge football fans.
I told him to have at it and give it a whirl… I’m hoping that Black Eyed Peas halftime show doesn’t spoil the superbowl for them forever.
Lindsay from Boston says:
Your fiancee is DEFINITELY on the right track. =) My dad set out on a similar mission when I was young, and I’m completely obsessed with football. Even have an official side gig writing blog posts for my team. (Although I’m a Falcons fan, so the Packers aren’t exactly in my good graces right now after the beatdown they delivered to us!!!)
Keep it up, Annie!! Football is too awesome to leave only to the guys!
Lisa says:
My daughter could have cared less about the actual football game but she was all about the pre-game and half time performances!
Love the balloon story
Skye says:
Annie gets to do so many cool things… I’m gonna ask my dad why he never threw ME a Super Bowl party! haha.
Angel says:
I love Annie’s closed eyes in the last picture like she’s absorbing daddy’s love. So sweet!
susanmig says:
annie is SO sweet to let austin play with her doll!!! although, i see she might have made a trade for the cool phone. so, there is that….way to go annie!
Mary M says:
Just wait until next year, Mike, when she can really talk. Our daughter is just about one year older than Annie (Jan. 20, 2009) and this season got into football. As in all football, all the time.
She knows the NFL, Ravens, Steelers, Bills, Cincy and Redskins’ logos on sight – and no matter how small they are she will shout out “football” when she sees them (on walks, from a moving car, on a passers-by shirt). She’s even figured out that if she says, “football, Daddy,” in a sweet enough voice, my husband will switch from news to ESPN (ok, that’s not really a sacrifice, but…)
Your heart will burst the first time that she yells “FOOTBALL” and swell even more when she does her first ‘touchdown’ hands over head and yell. Just wait.
And she loved the game on Sunday — except that her favorite team lost.
Lindsey says:
How cute! I think Annie’s going to be a big sports fan. And what a darling last picture! Did your team win? And WHERE did you get those “the office” bobbleheads??? I love Dwight!
Elizabeth says:
Too cute!!! Looks like you all had fun.
Rebecca says:
Is it okay to admit that I have a huge crush on your family?
Annie Y says:
So…who was Annie rooting for??
Mike says:
Annie was definitely rooting for the Packers!
Annie Y says:
Thata girl!
I might just have to send her a little present again!
Courtney says:
My nearly 11-month-old loves Glee! We just started watching season 1 on Netflix, and he seriously loves it! He and Annie could have a Glee-date.
MrsP says:
Seems like you guys had a blast, I hope she was rooting for the STEELERS!!!!
amourningmom says:
Very cute – looks like Annie will be a big sports fan
EmmieJ says:
Awww….so glad you all enjoyed it! Annie is such a cutie. (And truth be told…I slept through a good bit of the second quarter…too many wings for me too.)
Megan@TrueDaughter says:
Glad you guys had fun. And, like, I am sooo glad you got a new balloon, because, like that was sooo not cool!
Annie is a great cheerleader, and chalk one up for a Superbowl milestone! Hope you made an entry in her baby book about that one!
amanda says:
Epic party girl. Love it.
Melanie says:
I love the pictures… but where is the Jim bobblehead?
Mike says:
I think they have a Jim now… Heather got them for me in New York a while back at the NBC store!
Jessica says:
Cute!
Love the Office Bobbleheads too!
AmazingGreis says:
Look at her standing up…when did she get so grown up?
Marie says:
I too watched the Super Bowl. As I am a total Vikings fan it was hard for me to pick a team. But I knew the Packers better than the Steelers and so my decision was made for me. I knew their attitude was going to give them a win as soon as they stepped onto the field. It was a good game!
While browsing (flicking) through the channels afterwards I happened upon HSN. You could have totally gotten an Aaron Rodgers signed *authentic* helmet or a signed football for only $599.99. What a steal! lol
Not only did I hate America the Beautiful but the Star Bangled Banner was so messed up even I couldn’t follow. Being the mother of an Iraqi vet (and a lifelong musician) I so totally hate when singers change up the melody and sync of either song but especially our National Anthem. It should be sung the way it was written including the right words and melody. Just my two cents on that! I feel like it should be against the law or something to mess around with that just as it is to mess with the flag.
Glad Annie enjoyed her first Super Bowl! She’s just adorable.
Hugs from Minnesota
Marie
Meg says:
Glad that she represented by wearing green!
Neeroc says:
Way to go party animal! She is so adorable. And yay for giant football balloons, you’ll have that for years to come *g*.
Miss V only made it to 1/2 time, but she was completely disinterested by the entire thing, well except the guac.
