In case you were wondering, I’ve kept my distance from San Francisco ever since my bad juju put the Giants down 0-2 in the Division Series. I’ve been watching from home, though, and have greatly enjoyed the Giants amazing, come from behind victories against the Reds and Cardinals to advance to the World Series. This is all very exciting, but if there’s one thing I’ve learned in the last couple of weeks it’s that trying to watch a stressful playoff game with a toddler is almost impossible.
Annie actually wasn’t much of a distraction during last night’s game, but getting to watch the game proved problematic anyway because it was on opposite the presidential debate. I suggested recording the debate and watching it after the game, but Heather wasn’t crazy about that idea, so we came up with the somewhat loony solution of muting the game on the TV and watching/listening to the debate over the computer.
This worked out pretty well, although at one point I did momentarily get confused about why the announcers were discussing Iran instead of baseball.
Luckily, there weren’t any other scheduling conflicts during the playoffs, but there were plenty of Annie related conflicts. For one of the games I was home alone with Annie and Rigby, and though I’d hoped the three of us could have a little playoff party, neither of them was nearly as interested in the game as me.
The First Inning
….began with me reclining on the couch until:
“DAD! DAD?!?!?!? WANNA PLAY PANDA BEARS WIF ME?
The Second Inning
…began with me playing panda bears on the floor and stealing looks at the TV until:
“DAD! I NEED A DIAPER!”
The Third Inning
…began with me in Annie’s room frantically changing her diaper until:
“DAD? I’M HUNGRY!”
The Fourth Inning
…began with me in the kitchen, hurriedly whipping up some mac and cheese until:
“RUFF!!! RUFF!!! RUFF!!!
The Fifth Inning
…began with me waiting impatiently for Rigby to do her business in the backyard until:
“DADA? PLAY BLOCKS WIF ME?”
The Sixth Inning
…began with me stacking blocks in the playroom and straining to hear the announcers on the TV until:
“GRRRRRR!!! GRRRRRR!!!! RUFFF!!!!!”
The Seventh Inning
…began with me opening a can of dog food and filling Rigby’s bowl until:
“DADA! DRAW A SHARK, FLOUNDER, ARIEL, ARIEL’S DADA, AND ERIC!”
The Eighth Inning
….began with me hunched over the etch-a-sketch until:
I finished this masterpiece.
The Ninth Inning
…began with me at last back on the couch and hoping to watch the final inning in peace until:
“DAD?!”
I spun to Annie, annoyed. “What is it now, Sweetie?”
Annie smiled and said, “LET’S GO GIANTS!”
And then…
CLAP-CLAP-CLAP-CLAP-CLAP
That’s right. Annie was doing the rally clap. How awesome is that?
So yeah, my kid’s pretty cool even if she was an endless source of distractions during the first eight innings. Let’s just hope that the World Series brings a lot more rally claps from Annie, and a lot less of all the rest.
Kris says:
Move to the East Coast. Your kids should be long in bed during playoffs and World Series, but it’s night after night after night of being up until around midnight.
Becca says:
Wow – that etch-a-sketch really drawing really is quite impressive!
Editdebs says:
Congrats on the Giants win! (I grew up a Dodger fan, but I now live in Chicago. I married a rabid Cub fan, so I’ve been co-opted into being a Cub fan. And with Ron Santo announcing, it wasn’t really too hard. But I did miss that whole winning thing! And I still miss the voice of summer, Vin Scully. So, to live in my house, I have to hate the Cardinals.) Okay, that was probably way too much info–but, oh well.
Colleen says:
I felt so bad after your last Giants post, I started hoping they would win!
But that is over now…I’m sitting less than 8 blocks from Comerica Park, where all of your dreams of a World Series title will hopefully end!
Go Tigers!
Alyssa says:
Have to agree with you on the Go Tigers, colleen!! So happy that our boys have come this far!!
Mike, I mean this in the most caring and respectful way… I hope your team loses But Annie I am sure was very cute doing the rally clap.
Rebecca says:
I have been rooting for your Giants since your last post as well. But again, I’m with Colleen (across the street from Comerica Park… lol) — that ended last night, it’s Detroit’s turn for a championship!! Go Tigers!!
Rebecca says:
Sorry but I have to boo-boo-hiss-hiss this post because the St Louis Cardinals are supposed to go to the World Series….12 in 12 was our motto. Sorry but I need go to cry myself to sleep now.
Kendra says:
As a Cardinals fan, I kept telling myself, of course they are going to pull this out, Mike jinxed the Giants… Oh well, glad your bad juju is over, enjoy the World Series!
Sandy says:
Enjoy your Giants win. I’m from Michigan and it’s Go Tigers!
Lesley says:
Great post! But born and raised in Detroit, TIGERS all the way!
KateB says:
Oh, Mike. The only thing that made me feel better last night was knowing that at least YOU would be happy. I can’t believe we got 1 Run in 3 games!!!
deanna says:
i’m with kris….move to the east coast! i too watched the debates on the computer and the baseball game on tv (and MNF on the other computer, because i am ridiculous.) I hope your heart swelled with pride as annie did the rally clap. an important first step towards quality fandom! go giants!
Jackie says:
I’m happy the Giants beat the Cardinals but GO TIGERS!
Linnae says:
If I said I was a Twins fan that might show me as a real loser … so to show some real sportswomanship I’ll just say Go Giants!
Lindsey Reese says:
As a Braves fan, I was hoping the Cardinals would lose (and the small matter that my ex is a Cardinals fan) so I am happy with your Giants! I think the picture of Annie proudly holding up your artwork is my favorite picture of that doll yet!!!! I bet next year she will be giving you a lot less distraction and a lot more rally claps!! Love the dad that you are!!!
