I was a little crazy about brushing my teeth as a kid – I absolutely hated it. If you asked me why, I would have told you it was because brushing my teeth was “boring” and that toothpaste tasted like Coco’s butt. (Coco was my dog.) As a result, whenever my parents asked me if I had brushed my teeth I would emphatically answer, “Yes!” even if I had just polished off a vat of garlic flavored popcorn with nuts.
The only thing I hated more than brushing my teeth was going to the dentist. Back then dentists (or at least my weirdo dentist) didn’t wear gloves, so my only memory of check-ups was having my dentist cram his hairy knuckles into my mouth.
Wait. That’s not entirely true. I also remember one horrible moment when I was lying in the chair and looked up to see a giant booger hanging out of my dentist’s nose. I tried to close my mouth, but he barked, “Wider please,” and leaned closer. I shut my eyes in horror. When I dared to open them a few moments later, the booger was gone. I still wake up in a cold sweat at night worrying about where it went.
So, having heard all of that, you might think that I’m not the best person to teach Annabel about taking care of her teeth. You’d be wrong though. I have seen the light and now understand just how important it is to take care of your teeth.
Thankfully, Annabel is the exact opposite of me as kid (at least so far). She loves to have her teeth brushed!
She even loves toothpaste!
And, to my amazement, she will even brush her teeth all by herself!
Here’s hoping Annie always stays so good about taking care of her teeth… God knows I’ve heard enough horror stories about kids and their dental hygiene – not all of which were about me!
Jenn says:
OMG…YOU ARE GROSS!!! I actually gagged when I read the whole booger part!!! GAG!!! I know, I know “YOU think that’s bad…YOU should have been ME”!! No Thank you!!
So Happy Annie finds a lot of joy brushing her teeth!! I had to smile at the 2nd picture b/c it REALLY reminded me of Maddie when she use to open her mouth as wide as it could go but made NO sound!! (Thanks for the Maddie story Heather… I LOVED it)!
Annie is so flipping cute!! You guys should REALLY think about her modeling!! She is so beautiful and the camera just loves her!! I mean, REALLY….who else but Annabel could make something like brushing ones own teeth into a GLAMOUR shot?!?
Word to the wise however….when she DOES go on her 1000 000 auditions…you might just want to leave the whole “BOOGER Story” at home! Chances are if it grosses YOU out, it’s gonna REALLY mess up someone else head (and/or whole dental experience)!!!
Just saying….;-) ha ha ha
Neeroc says:
It’s a testament to the cuteness of Annie that I managed to squee at those pics after you made me throw up a little in my mouth!
Lori says:
Could have done without the booger story during my breakfast.
Lisa says:
Seriously that last picture of her is the CUTEST! She is soooooo darn adorable i cant stand it.
Walkingborder (Karen) says:
Ok, the booger part triggered pregnancy gag reflex and I almost lost my freshly eaten breakfast. Thanks?
JoAnn says:
Those pictures? Too adorable!
Rachel says:
Bahahaha omg gross! If I see the slightest sign of a booger just hangin out I book it, I don’t even care! Something similar happened to me when I was little…. Oh yuck, now I’m gagging.
Lisa_in_WI says:
That second photo of Annie with her mouth wide open is hilarious!
Amanda Joy says:
Hairy knuckles ((shudder)) My dentist wore gloves… but no mask. My mouth is painfully propped open, while the dentist is talking, and I discover he was a SPIT TALKER. I have issues with spit. My two year old and three year old get in BIG trouble if they spit. To have someone I wasn’t kissing, put THEIR spit in MY mouth… I didn’t go to the dentist again from ninth grade until I was 21. (plus he made fun of my religion, punk)
nancy says:
my dad has false teeth. when i was a kid we were told that dad lost them because he did not brush properly. so of course my brother and i were always good with brushing our teeth. then my brother started playing baseball and the truth came out. dad lost his teeth because he was busy flirting with a girl in the stands instead of paying attention to the batter at home plate. everyone yelled heads up and he did only to eat a well hit baseball. of course when i go to baseball games and pepole yell heads up i duck and cover but i still have all my teeth
Rebecca says:
Get her a spin brush. My kids LOVE those. And so far, no cavities! Annie is adorables!
Lacy says:
Holy crap. The mental images from the booger story will haunt me for the rest of my days.
I’m so sorry you had to endure that torture.
BLECH!!
Trisha Vargas says:
I think I dry heaved while reading about the booger. Boogers gross me out so bad. Thanks for that!
Glad to see Annie brushing and excited about it. That’s awesome! Hopefully it sticks and she keeps enjoying it. My 2 year old, who at one point loved brushing and wanted to eat the toothpaste at any given chance is currently on tooth brush strike all the sudden and I have to pry her mouth open. The cleaning and xrays in June should go sooo smoothly. Looking forward to it
These pictures show how long her hair is getting. The little curls are so cute and her expressions are priceless.
Anna says:
Yes, the booger story is gross, but it also made me laugh my ass off!
Rachel says:
Well, I laughed at the booger story! Unfortunately I had just taken a big mouthful of coffee. It was a close thing, but I managed not to spit it all over my laptop! Thanks for the laugh this morning!
Kate says:
When my husband was a teenager, he went to the family dentist. His whole family went to him. Typical dentist, old guy, grey hair. Well in the middle of working on my husbands teeth, he farted. Farted. And he said, “Excuse me.” But there my husband sat with his mouth wide open, and not able to close it. Hahaha
Megan@TrueDaughter says:
How long do you think it will take for the gagging sensation in the back of my throat to wear off?
Glad Annie likes to brush her teeth – but I may be a tad bit sorry I read this one! blech! ;p

Got me in trouble with the twins! I laughed out loud several times while reading this and they told me I wasn’t supposed to laugh at babies?????? All they see is pictures of Madeline on the side screen and think I am laughing at her.
I am still randomly laughing out loud like a crazy woman! You are hilarious!
AmyG says:
You crack me up, Mike! I love reading your posts. My girls don’t really like brushing their teeth either. I think it’s a phase they go through, because they loved it when they were Annie’s age. Keep up the good dental hygiene, though! ;o)
Lamb says:
The booger thing cracked me up! BLECH!! I actually work for a pediatric dentist and have been wondering if Annie has been to the dentist yet (1st visit by age 1!)
I love that last photo. Would you be at all interested in letting me use it on our office website? It’s rachelleshaw.com, and you can see that I was running a little low on dental photos the last time I updated our site, hence the photos of my DOGS wearing our No Cavities bibs
If it’s fine, just lemme know at lambaround@gmail.com. If it’s not fine though, I definitely understand, so no worries!
Mommy Boots says:
My 15 month old LOVES. Her toothbrush. When she sees it she gleefully yells, “TEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!”
It is shaped like a penguin. I don’t know if that contributes to her love of it or not, but I’m sure it can’t hurt.
Ray says:
What a gross dentist! Poor, Mike! And those photos of you and Annabel are too cute!
Elizabeth says:
She looks too cute brushing her own teeth, such a big girl!! BTW love those curls!!!
Knoxville Dentist says:
Wow, she is really little to understand the concept of tooth-brushing! This is a great sign for parents.
Oral Surgeon Utah says:
Good thing she is the opposite of you in that regard She is adorable!
