The days since Annabel was born have been a haze of exhaustion and emotion. There are so many things to say and stories to tell, and I’m glad I have Mike to fill in for me as I know it’s going to take me a bit to get back on my feet.
I wanted to jump on for a minute here in between the feedings and the sleeping and the surgery recovering to thank everyone. When I tweeted that I might have a baby on the 22nd, the outpouring of well wishes and love buoyed us – especially after I was wheeled into the OR and Mike didn’t know if he’d be able to witness Annabel’s birth. It was amazing to be recovering from surgery and have my family and friends reading comments and tweets from everyone. The situation was so emotional I don’t know that I will ever be able to put it into words – but your words…we can’t thank you enough.
I am so grateful for all of you. I am so grateful that I was able to be awake for Annabel’s birth. I am so grateful that she was healthy, despite being pre-term, and she got to go home with me two days after she was born. In fact, she was cleared to leave the hospital long before I was. I had to talk the OB team into letting me go.
Two days before Annie was born, I was invited to film a piece for Momversation about teaching our children to be grateful. It is something Mike and I plan to instill in Annie from the start. We don’t take anything for granted, and we certainly don’t want her to either.
We are so grateful for this little face
Thank you all so much for caring about us.

Every time I read your blog, I cry. Luckily, now I can laugh too. So, sorry if this rambles a bit, but I’m fighting sleep and tears. Here’s my sob story:
Your blog (and one other one: The Nie Nie Dialogues) has really changed my life. I was VERY depressed this time last year. I couldn’t imagine life beyond the next day. I couldn’t even see myself a year on, unless I was in psychological rehabilitation center. Basically, committed.
But once I read your blog (I think it was just after Maddie passed), my sad-person-problems appeared to be overcome-able (is there a better word for that?). I was grateful that I could fix my problem. I didn’t have an emotional (and I’m sure it felt physical too) hole in my heart caused by the death of my child. I was grateful that the hole in my heart wasn’t so deep that it couldn’t be refilled by smiles alone. I–me myself, alone–could fix my problems. THEY WERE ABSOLUTELY FIXABLE! And I was so grateful for that revelation. You and Stephanie Nielson have taught me perspective and gratitude. If I ever feel like I’m falling the quicksand of depression, I try to remember all the things I have yet to do and look forward to.
And I promise you, when I eventually do become a mother, when I’m hopefully handed my newborn baby after carrying him or her to-term and he or she just screams at my face, I will be grateful because of you and Madeline. If I suffer from infertility, I will remember Stephanie’s sister, Courtney and her victories against it, as well as those who have no choice but to adopt. And I will also remember Stephanie, whose body may be too scarred for her to have a baby, and makes it a daily struggle just to exist and cope with her new body. And when things start to look up after a storm, I will remember the Amazing Annabel, your little Binky Spohrhead. Your family (and BlogHer family too) really has changed my life forever and I really wanted to thank you. I really am eternally indebted to you guys.
And if our gratitude makes you grateful (IN A NEVER-ENDING CIRCLE OF GRATITUDE-GIVING!!!), well, we all have done our part to make our part of the world a little more precious.

What an important momversation! Two of the main lessons I’ve learned since becoming an EMT 4 years ago is NEVER to take anything in this life for granted, and that there is always someone who has it worse than you do.
I dwell on this probably more than I should, but it’s something I want to make certain my 3 children understand. Compassion and empathy for others are very necessary and powerful things, and they’re a huge part of what makes us human beings.
Anyway, a very thought provoking momversation, Heather.

Heather, you don’t even have to thank us. You’ve revealed so much of yourself, shared so much of yours, Mike’s and Madeline’s story with us, that it’s the least we can do to be the kind word when you need it, the prayer when you ask for it, and the encouraging tweets when you want it.
I, like many others, would say I’m grateful for you guys for sharing your story and being a part of my life, even though we are strangers that live 3,000 miles a part. The first thing I do in the mornings (during my pre-actual-work-internet-cycle) is check your site, and in the last few days, I’ve been checking 5 times a day for more updates of your adorable little girl. I attended a funeral this past weekend, I wrote on FB about how much good came out of it and the weekend, and part of the reason why was because my internet stranger-friends brought a beautiful, much loved, much anticipated baby girl into the world. The impact that you’ve made in my life (and many others) is powerful, so thank YOU.
Annabel is so freakin’ adorable!! She’s so lucky to have such a great family and I’m thrilled that she’s home with you already (even though she didn’t wait until Sunday!!). You deserve all the congratulations that you’ve received x1,000.

Dear Heather and Mike,
Last year, when I learned from other blogs about your sweet Madeline, I came here every morning for weeks and cried with you. When I learned that Heather was pregnant, I was so happy and came here every day to read about how her pregnancy was progressing. I never met Maddie, and I have never met either of you, or even been to California, but your courage and honesty and raw emotion inspired me.
Yesterday, my community learned the tragic news that a body of a young woman had been found on a farm, and that it was very likely that of Morgan Harrington, who disappeared more than three months ago. Morgan was a student at my alma mater and had disappeared right by the area where I park my car every day. I was personally touched by the case and so saddened by yesterday’s news. The strength and courage and kindness of her parents, even in this tragedy, has inspired me much like you two do. And so I came here this morning, not to cry with you but to read more about Annie and be so, so happy that you have a new little girl in your life. Thank you so much for sharing your world with us via this blog. You and other parents who have faced the worst life has to offer have changed my life and made me feel better about the world, even though it can be so terrible sometimes.

I just watched your video-it was great! One thing we did here with my 3 year old and 19 month old was to have them help me find things to donate to our church to help other kids. It started out hard, but we just kept reminding them of all we had and how other kids didn’t have any playdough, or any canned peaches-and it was fun for them to carry can of food to the pantry at church while we carried the other bags. Every year we will continue to go through our things and donate what we don’t need and make the kids be a part of it.

What’s amazing is that we all do care, so much. Not all of us know you, but we all really care and feel so invested in this new little life that’s entered the world. We’ve cried happy and sad tears with you and I know I, personally, could not be happier for you.
I love that you’re all home together and can’t wait to watch Annabel grow into the person she’s going to become.

And I agree, it is so important to learn how to be grateful and generous human beings. I think the real trick is to learn how to be appreciative with feeling guilty. I think it is okay to have what you have, and to appreciate all of the blessings in your life, financial or otherwise – as long as you are mindful that not everyone is so fortunate, and you develop a generosity of spirit to go along with that.

Lindsay from Florida says:
What I’m grateful for is that you have written your journey with such grace and honesty, opened yourself so completely to total strangers: you NEVER had to, and every single one of us would understand if you and Mike want to take a blogging break during “babymoon” time (we all know how to stalk Flickr well enough to get our daily dose of Annie’s beauty … truly, Heather, I’m not writing empty words there … she IS one of the most stunning babies I’ve ever seen).
I have a hard time describing to others how deeply invested I am in the story of a family I am unlikely to ever meet … how the announcement of Annie’s birth drew almost gasping tears from me because I’ve read the months of hope, fear, grief, and joy that led to it.
But, when it comes down to it, I’m invested because you have chosen to share the radiant gifts that are both your daughters with all of us.
For that, every single reader here is grateful.

As much as you thank us, I feel like I should be thanking you. You have changed many lives, including mine. Your blog is the first thing I check every morning on my way to work. Thank you for sharing Maddie and now Miss Annabel with us. Even though my daughter was born full term, you have inspired me to fight for other families who do not get that opportunity. I have loved volunteering for March of Dimes and can’t wait to walk in my first March for Babies this May.
Thank you Heather and Mike for inviting us into your lives. My heart still breaks for you over the loss of Maddie but I am so overjoyed that Annabel is here! She is amazing cute
Hope your c/s recovery is going well. Thinking of you all in KY!

Annie is absolutely gorgeous!!
Teaching our children to appreciate what they have is a constant in our house. We really try not to overindulge and to really be thankful for what we have. Heather, you are so right about not getting down on yourself for even things like our bodies is huge. Something I struggle with constantly but I don’t want my girls to think that they aren’t good enough just the way they are so I try really hard to not get down on myself for my flaws (at least in front of them). It is amazing what we impress on our children even when we don’t think they are watching.

Love you guys ! I just can’t believe all you and Mike have been through in the almost 3 years since you were here in Michigan for Lisa and Matt’s wedding.
With all the trials and tribulations , you have traveled through all of this together and inspired so many people. Little Annabell is such a joy to so many people in this World. She will be an inspiration to us all just as Maddie continues to be. We all love both of you , Maddie and Annabel.
I have to admit , I’m looking every day for mention of dear Rigby. How’s she doing with her new little girl ? Is she snuggling with you ?
Bridget says:
I’m grateful to you for sharing your life and experiences with all of us! It is a very brave thing to be so open and I’m happy to hear that your efforts have rewarded you through the exponential swelling of love.
Also, since I’m one who likes to give sibling gifts when a new baby is born to help a little with the adjustment, I gave to Friends of Maddie as a big sister tribute to that precious girl that has not at all been replaced by the new addition. I encourage your other readers to do the same!
Enjoy this special time with Annie.
PS – as a midwesterner it has been refreshing to know there are such down to earth, normal people in SoCal. Thank you for your rich insights, humor and most of all your honesty.

Laura says:
This is SUCH a good idea!!!
What a wonderful way to honor Annabel’s birth, and also the life of her big sister!!!
I know times are tough for almost everyone right now, but there are over THREE THOUSAND followers of this blog. If we all donated even one dollar that would make sure a difference to FoM!! If we all donated $5-$10, even better!
I know we are all sharing in Heather and Mike’s joy, and I know I am not the only one who wants to send some flowers, or an adorable little outfit for Miss Annie. However, judging by the pictures of all the gorgeous clothes that little girl has, they will probably have a hard time as it is being able to use all the outfits before she grows out of them. And flowers are great, but a gift to Friends of Maddie would mean so much more to the Spohrs and to the NICU families that will benefit from the support packs.
Come on, TSAM readers, let’s all donate to Friends of Maddie as a way to celebrate the arrival of her GORGEOUS and amazing little sister!

You guys are so very, very loved.
I’ve never actually clicked through to listen to a momversation before (I’m exceedingly lazy) but since you were speaking, I did! And I’m so glad… it’s an issue near and dear to my heart. We live in a horribly poor, underfunded, forgotten area of California. My husband and I started a charity called Meat for Dinner so that we could donate meat from our ranch (and from other ranchers, as well) to local families, through the schools. My kids know that we grow meat so that kids can eat (wow that rhymes!) and that otherwise, they would go hungry. It’s an amazing lesson to learn, and one that I hope will stick with them through the rest of their lives.
Love you, girl. Give that baby Annabel and extra kiss from me!

What a great clip! I think that gratefulness and understanding is a difficult concept to explain to children mainly because most adults don’t actually understand. So many of us take for granted many of the gifts in our own lives. I think it is a lesson for all–not just children.
On different note, Annabel, what a wonderful name! I babysit for a family who has a daughter named Annabel as well. That was the first I’d ever heard the name–unique and beautiful

Heather & Mike – This is my third post that starts with you don’t know me, but… You still don’t “know” me, but I do know that I want to wish you such happiness with your two perfect angels. Isn’t it so awesome that you love your second as much as your first? (I was so worried about that!) Wait til you see how alike they are…and how totally different. Take care of your little ones!

so happy to hear that all is well. i still remember following your tweets … and grieving with you, as mom to mom.

I’ve followed your blog for some time now but I have never posted any comments. The experiences you have shared have touched me tremendously. Thank you for sharing such pivotal events in your life. While I do not have children, my husband and I do hope to have them someday. If and when we do, I hope we are as resilient as your family is. I can’t really explain how but your blog has taught me so much about loving, losing, and living. Thank you! I wish your family all the best.

As a regular reader of dooce.com, I saw you on momversation and was intrigued to read your blog. I had a lot of time on my hands this weekend, so I was able to read the ENTIRE blog from start to finish. I laughed, I cried ( a lot), at one point I yelled out “give these people a BREAK!”, and I cried tears of joy to see little Annie come in to this world.
You are so brave to share your story with us. I had a pretty hard week last week, but after reading your words, and re-watching the momversation, I thought about how grateful I am for what I do have. I am also so grateful that I was able to hear Maddie’s story and learn about her little life. What a HAPPY baby! She had a wonderful life and you seem like amazing parents. I wish you the best with miss Annie, she is blessed to join such a loving family.
Best,
Annie T.

Heather I finally got my old speakers working and was able to listen to your Momversation. Well done! I hope it is the first of many. You made essential contributions to the topic. It sucks that your wisdom is so excruciatingly earned, but it is so, so beautiful that you share it so generously. That life can come down to a matter of when, where, how -its random nature is the big “unfair” that challenges us all the time. Gratitude as we go is a great solace.
