It’s time for the 2013 March for Babies, the March of Dimes’ biggest fundraiser. There are walks in cities all over the nation. On April 27th we Spohrs will be marching for Maddie for the sixth year in a row. By participating, we are helping March of Dimes champion the needs of families and babies in our community and across the nation. The money we raise for March for Babies will support lifesaving research, services, education and advocacy that help babies get a healthy start – babies like Madeline’s sister Annabel, who made it to 36+ weeks thanks in large part to medical advances championed by the March of Dimes. Hopefully, her little brother will make it at least that far.
For the last four years, we have been not only one of the largest family teams in Los Angeles, but also one of the most successful fundraising teams in the nation. It’s an honor that all of you help make possible every year. Our team goal is $20,000 – no small feat – but we want to continue our streak as the biggest team in Los Angeles. Beyond LA, we’re hoping that everyone who has walked in Maddie’s name in year’s past will walk again. And to everyone who hasn’t walked yet, we hope this will be the year you join, or even start, a team.
Joining a team means more to my family than any of you may realize. April is hard and emotional, and after the sadness we feel in the days leading up to the seventh, knowing that we will see (either in person or via photos and emails) so many people supporting and remembering Maddie…honestly it’s a light that leads us through.
In the last four years, literally thousands of people opened their hearts and wallets and donated to the March of Dimes in honor of my beautiful daughter Madeline. The donations that came in after Maddie passed completely blew my family away, and made sure that millions of people, including lawmakers, know the name Madeline Spohr. As a parent, I am proud and humbled.
I only ask for donations for the two most important causes in my life – The March of Dimes and the charity we started in Maddie’s name, Friends of Maddie, which strives to help parents with children in NICUs across the country. Donations can be made directly to the March of Dimes through my link here. Every little bit helps, even if it’s only a quarter! In 2009, 90% of the donations our team received were for $10 or less – and we were the top family team in the nation! We are also selling Marching For Maddie Shirts again this year. Shirt sales are open to everyone, and all proceeds are going towards Team March for Maddie (we also sell Friends of Maddie shirts). If you want to wear a shirt at your walk this year, be sure to order them ASAP!
If you’re in Los Angeles, we would be honored if you would march with us. You can sign up HERE to join the original March For Maddie team. If you are elsewhere in the country and have started a team, please leave a comment below with your team’s information. Not a team in your area? Start one! Or, if there isn’t a walk near you, join our team as a marcher in spirit.
Thank you again for everything you have done for my family, and in turn, thousands of other families. We miss Madeline so much, but knowing that there are people all over the world that have been touched by her is indescribable. We are all doing amazing things in her memory.

I will be joining your team this year, for Jayden, who at 23 weeks has become a medical marvel, thanks in large part to research through MOD. My NICU nurses have asked that I also walk with them at a local event and I will proudly do that as well. Thank you, Heather for your support through my NICU adventures and I will continue to support Maddie’s causes.
Heather says:
Jayden is AMAZING – and so are you! I am going to try to attend the Ventura walk this year, although I think my OB would murder me if I actually tried to walk. I’ll email you! xo

I will be joining your family again this year. For Maddie and for Aubrey, the now thriving 3 year old who scared us all when she started life in the NICU.
I make one trip to LA each year, and I am so glad it is to walk with your family for this cause.
Madeleine says:
I will be walking with my family for the 7th year in a row since our Spencer was released from the NICU in 2006. As a 1 pound 12 ouncer he is truly a miracle and I thank the March of Dimes for getting us through some dark times with their abundance of information. We always think of Maddie during our walk in Miami and Spencer, now 6, knows her story and says you are all friends, lol.

I will be walking for the first time this year on Team Sari’s Soldiers in Houston, TX. Sari and her sister Hailey (my cousins) were born just shy of 26 weeks at 1 lb. 6 oz and 1 lb. 9 oz. Both girls fought for their lives with such unbelievable strength and grace. Unfortunately, Sari passed away after 62 days in the NICU leaving her family absolutely devastated. Today, Sari’s sister Hailey is 16 months old and still kicking prematurity’s butt with every milestone she reaches, every smile she smiles despite what challenges she meets, every second that she lives life with no fear, just sheer and utter joy. I will be walking with Hailey in honor of her fight for life and in honor of sweet Sari, and of course beautiful Maddie all of who inspire me each and every day with their strength and courage. Thanks for sharing your Maddie, your story, and your passion for helping others.
xo,
Emily

On May 25th my fellow NICU nurses and I will be participating in our local Pedal for Preemies up here in Canada. I am so proud to be walking alongside one of my special graduates this year. Isla was born at 24 weeks and weighed 640 grams. Now she’s 18 months and will be toddling along with her parents and I. I think of you and Maddie every time I walk into my NICU, and will be keeping your whole family in my heart this month.

I want to send a few preemie outfits and a few dollars. Is there an address? The preemie outfits are gently worn for a tiny girl.

I’d like to know if there is a March for Maddie team in Portland, OR. Please reply if you have a team or are interested in putting a team together!
Heather says:
I’m not aware of one!

I’m so excited that my company has a team this year and that our CEO is one of board members of our local chapter here in Sacramento. We’re hoping to have one of the largest teams in the area and I am so jazzed. I think of Maddie a lot and will be walking in her honor as well as in celebration of my nephew. Love to you all.

Thank you so very much for all you do for March of Dimes. As the L.A. March for Babies Mission Family Specialist and as a mission mom myself, I am grateful for your dedication to our mission and inspired by your courage. Thank you!
Jen says:
We’ll be marching here in Omaha (Go Team #Nolo!!) for my incredible niece and nephew, as well as our good friends’ twin baby girls. Of course I’ll certainly have your family and especially your beautiful Madeline in my heart that day, too.
Mommy says:
It will be an honor to march for your sweet and beautiful girl! She will never, ever be forgotten.

Since I was 16, I’d only ever given regularly to one charity (I’m 42 now) but that changed when I met Maddie. I now also give regularly to MoD, always in Maddie’s name. Your sweet girl with the engaging eyes and illuminating smile opened my eyes to MoD and all they do and I can never thank her enough!
