Mike, Annie, my parents, and myself all converged on San Francisco this weekend in honor of Jackie! For the fourth year in a row, we were a part of her team walking to raise money for the National Brain Tumor Society.
Family and friends of Jackie! came in from all over. The kids had a blast playing together.
Annie showed Jake how to pick and throw grass like an expert
After snacks and beverages it was time to walk. Everyone donned their costumes – toast-shaped hats for the adults, superhero capes for the kids.
Jackie! and her parents are creative and positive all the time – as if these hats and capes didn’t make that obvious.
It was a gorgeous day in San Francisco, unseasonably perfect. A wonderful day to walk, celebrate, and support Jackie! and everyone else affected by brain tumors.
Jackie!’s team came in first place for fundraising, with a total of almost $70k. She was called up in front of the entire walk to give an acceptance speech.
She rocked her toast hat and rocked her speech, too.
We spent the rest of the weekend with Jackie!. I’m soaking up my time with her, trying not to annoy her too much (sorry Jackie!, I just really like hanging out with you). I know she hates words like “strong” and “inspirational” so I won’t use those. Instead I’ll just brag that she’s raised so much money for brain tumor research that the National Brain Tumor Society named a Chair of Research in her honor: the Jacqueline Oswold Chair in Systems Biology. She is amazing.

Since she hates it, I’ll refrain from saying how inspiring Jackie! is and just say how incredible it is that her team raised so much money for such an important research area!
Love the costumes! You guys really are super heroes!
Kate @ UpsideBackwards says:
That *is* amazing! Well done, all of you, for such an outstanding fundraising effort. And huge hugs to Jackie! May that research chair guide and stimulate innovative and effective new treatments for everyone who needs them.

Go Jackie! I’ve known she was one amazing lady from the first time I read about her on your blog and realized that the exclamation mark after her name was always there…and for a good reason.
Lynn from For Love or Funny says:
WOW. Jackie is awesome – I can’t think of a better, more suitable word for her!
Pattie says:
What an amazing accomplishment — way to go, Jackie! She is truly an inspiration. It’s great that you were all able to get to S.F. for the walk.

Amazing accomplishment! We used to walk in the Brain Tumour walk localling, a former co-worker of mine was diagnosed in her 5 month of pregnancy and had it removed not long after. She does a lot of work here now for the national organization in Canada.
Congrats on the fundraising and best of luck in the coming months!

I’ll say it then, Jackie! is amazing and inspirational, and I’m glad to get to know more about her through your blog. Way to go Jackie! and I just think how blessed you two are to have such a friendship!
Trisha says:
Well we can isay it then right? She is strong and so amazing and inspirational
What a wonderful person and how great a friend she must be!
Heather says:
Wow. That is very cool!
One thing that has inspired me about Jackie is her friendship to you, Heather, even when she is going through so much herself. We should all be so lucky to know someone like that. You’re very fortunate and Jackie seems like an absolutely amazing person.

I love how you guys had so much fun and was able to help at the same time. Are those hats made of paper? They are so cute! I enjoyed this post.
Thanks for sharing!

Team Toast rocks! Congratulations to Jackie! for raising so much money and making such a huge impact on the fight for a cure for brain cancer. I love that you are both so supportive of each other, and I’m glad you’ve been able to spend so much time together lately. Jackie! is in my thoughts daily.

Heather,
Jackie is awesome and is an inspiration. My dad was diagnosed with a brain tumor in Oct. of last year. Would she mind if you told me what kind she has?
Heather says:
Not at all – she has a grade 4 GBM brain tumor.
Kaleena says:
So does dad. He is 50 and that just doesn’t seem
So old anymore. He just had his 6 month MRI and it was clear! So proud of Jackie and what she is doing for BT research. And you don’t know me but I ran across your blog years ago and I love it!!! Thanks for sharing!
Heather says:
Thanks for reading! That’s great news about your dad!
Jolene says:
WOW. God bless her and all of you. We take part in this walk locally every year as well in honor of my sister’s dear husband who was diagnosed with a brain tumor Grade 4 in 2007. It is something so near and dear to our hearts but we have never, ever raised anything close to $70k. That is incredible! Thanks to her (and her entire team), I hope my brother-in-law is able to play with his grandchildren someday.
Mommy says:
You are all pretty damn awesome.
AmazingGreis says:
