After we lost our Madeline, we didn’t know what to do with our lives. Everything we did, we did for her. Our lives, once focused on our wonderful daughter, were adrift.
Too devastated to plan our child’s funeral, our friends did it for us. So unprepared for the financial burden of paying for it, thousands of people from all over the world made contributions big and small to assist us. There was more donated than we needed.
So what to do with that extra money? We knew right away.
Today we are proud to announce Friends of Maddie, a non-profit organization we’ve started in honor of Madeline. Friends of Maddie supports families of critically ill babies by easing the transition into NICU life and providing an ally until the end of their child’s hospital stay.
Our time in the NICU was so frightening, lonely, and overwhelming. As Maddie’s parents, we can think of no better way to honor her memory than to help other families in her name.
We ask that you please help support other families the way you so kindly supported us. Please visit Friends of Maddie to learn how you can help. We’re kicking things off with an amazing giveaway!
Thank you all, from the bottom of our hearts, for making this possible.
Mike & Heather Spohr

I think this is a lovely idea, and there is something similar being done at a few hospitals near us. It really can make huge difference for families and babies.
Basically, what you want is to have the nurses and docs at the NICU trained in Family Centred Maternity Care.
http://www.familycenteredcare.org/index.html
I’ve been trained in this, and I know that sometimes hospitals say they do this, and put a plaque on the wall, but really, it doesn’t happen in the patient/families eyes. This organization might be able to help you break through that barrier. Good luck, and if you need anything, anything on earth, please ask me, I’ll do whatever I can to help.

Dear Heather & Mike,
It always inspires me how a family, such as yours loose the love of their lives, yet still have the strength to start a wonderful organization to benefit others in need.
If there is anything good to come out of this situation, this is it! I thought about starting a similar foundation up where I live. I was only in the hospital for 6 days, 24 hours after my baby was born. Because he was too sick to leave his room, I didn’t either. I stayed by his side 24/7. I slept on a broken cot that would collapse on me in the middle of the night (boy does that feel awesome when you have stitches!), I had nothing in my small 8×10 room but a small radio but, boy was I GRATEFUL for that radio! I so remember feeling so overwhelmed, lost and full of despair as I watched other families leave with their babies while my baby was still hooked up to IV ‘s and monitors.
I could have used your support back then, and I know others will appreciate it today. I hope it brings both you and Mike a sense of solace and a purpose. I will definitely look and see what I can do to help.
Thank you for being so selfless in the name of a beautiful little girl who will NEVER be forgotten! How proud I am of you guys!
Take Care,
Sincerely,
Your Stranger Friend,
Jenn

I am sitting here with tears streaming down my cheeks. I stumbled upon your website and story one day while surfing the web. Sadly, I never shared in the joyful parts of your blog but only knew your story of heartbreaking loss. I have since read every post and check in each morning. I prayed every day that you both would find an outlet for your pain and a way to honor your precious child. I said this prayer because 10 yrs ago friends of mine lost a child to Cancer. She was only 3. Since then they have started a foundation to help other children with the same illness and to help the families of those special kids. It has been their saving grace. It is that grace that has now filled your heart and I applaud you.

Thank you so very much for thinking of all us NICU families. We have cried along with your for Maddie, and I know you have cried with us for our little ones.
My Liam was a 29 weeker that almost didn’t come from from the NICU, and his lungs were so bad on x-rays that they stopped taking pictures of them and said we will know if and when they heal by looking at him. I still cry when I look at him. Thank you for having such a courageous and wonderful daughter, she has brought so much joy and now support to those that love her.

Simply amazing…
It never fails that when I come here each day I am always struck deeply. I hope this doesn’t sound strange, but despite the heart-stopping pain, the tears that I’ve cried, and anger that I’ve felt on your behalf, I always leave here up-lifted. The under-lying message here is of a deep love and it just reaches out and grabs and shakes me. We are all blessed that you choose to share that with us.
And this? This is a simply amazing extension of that love and grace. As the mom of a NICU graduate born at 25wks I thank you. I’ll absolutely sponsor some support packs. I also think the support network made up of former NICU families is a wonderful idea and will be watching for ways that I can help. I know I was terrified and so very intimidated during our NICU stay. The nurses were incredibly supportive and did what they could, but I always felt that any attention they gave me took away from the babies on their charge. (Not that they would ever really let it but…) If there had been someone to talk to, who could answer the questions that I felt were too “stupid” to ask, who could understand why I was afraid of my own child, who would listen to me emote about the hell that was returning to work while my daughter was in NICU or when I needed to leave to attend to my other children… well suffice it to say that I’d love to be able to help provide that support to someone else.

You know, they say that you learn someone’s true character by how they react when they are faced with a disaster. I can’t imagine a more devastating situation than what you and Mike have gone through. And now, in your bleakest hour, you have reached out to other parents. You have found a way to use your experience to help other preemie parents to navigate the complicated world of the NICU.
I began reading your blog ages ago and followed Maddie’s contagious attitude and progress religiously. Never did I think that we would have more in common than two adorable, curly-haired angels. And now I find myself in a high-risk pregnancy with preterm labour at 28 weeks. Your strength as a mother, and Maddie’s determination and lust for life are now constantly on my mind.

Heather and Mike,
I rarely comment, but I read all of your updates. Thank you so much for sharing your journey…you truly are an inspiration. When I read about “Friends of Maddie” it brought tears to my eyes. What a wonderful way to remember this little girl who has already changed lives. Money is very tight right now, but I will definitely donate as soon as I can…probably after rent week. Thanks again for all you do and for sharing your pain and strength with all of us.
Megan says:
Heather and Mike, you are wonderful people to use this tragedy to help the March of Dimes and now, to support NICU families directly. I work at an academic hospital where families sometimes come from several hundred miles away when their babies are admitted to the NICU. Many times they cannot afford a hotel room (we have low-cost accommodations but sometimes they’re full) and don’t get a chance to even pack a change of clothes or a toothbrush. This is a wonderful support system you guys are creating, and I hope my hospital can access it soon. How can you find out if a NICU is level III? I have never heard that term before and do not know if ours is.
Heather says:
Based just on you saying you work at an academic hospital, I’d say it’s a level III NICU. But if you asked someone, they would be able to tell you for sure!
Tara in The Fort says:
That is so very special! What an outpouring of support from all these people and what a gift this foundation will be to many, many more people. I’m excited to watch how this unfolds and how many more lives Maddie, you and Mike will touch. This tragedy will surely turn in to many blessings to come.
I had a NICU baby as well-it was scary and lonely a lot of the time. I’m so proud of you for taking this step! I think it will be very healing for you.

We got one of those bags when our son was in the NICU. It didn’t have the lip balm or the lotion which would have been great. That place is so dry.
I just donated $25, the cost of one bag. I am going to try and raise money to buy 9 more.

My first child spent a week in the NICU and if someone had been there to provide support to me I would have been eternally grateful, so I think what you are doing in Maddie’s memory is awesome!
On a different note, I found this on the website Waiting for Happy and I thought of you. Please delete it if you feel that I shouldn’t have put it here.
Remembering
Go ahead and mention my child,
The one that died, you know.
Don’t worry about hurting me further.
The depth of my pain doesn’t show.
Don’t worry about making me cry.
I’m already crying inside.
Help me to heal by releasing
The tears that I try to hide.
I’m hurt when you just keep silent,
Pretending she didn’t exist.
I’d rather you mention my child,
Knowing that she has been missed.
You asked me how I was doing.
I say “pretty good” or “fine”.
But healing is something ongoing
I feel it will take a lifetime.

On a side note: I was reading through the Friends of Maddie website and read the section on the NICU. Did you know that in 1963 when President Kennedy and Jackie Kennedy lost their third child (born prematurely at 34 weeks) it caused a huge outpourting of public and private resources for medical research for preemies? I am a huge trivia nerd and love to spread the info!

I have been following Maddie’s story for several months now and I have been inspired by Maddie’s life. I am with a program in Hillsborough County, Florida (Tampa) called the HUG program (Help U Grow.) We provide support and referrals to NICU families in all 4 Level 3 NICUs in the county (University Community Hospital, St. Joseph’s Women’s Hospital, Tampa General Hospital and Brandon Regional Hospital.) We are always looking for ways to help support our families and I have fowarded a link to Maddie’s foundation to my co-workers. It is wonderful that you are honoring Maddie in this way. You will help so many other families on this journey.

I wish that I could donate a million…but hopefully the small amount will add up with a lot of others and make more than ten times a million. You are doing a great thing.

Hey Heather,
Denise fom old NPHS here. I read everyday, although I do not say much, because I never feel like I would say the “right” thing, I do think of you and Mike often.
I love that you are doing this to honor Maddie and help others. If you need any help distributing them in South Central PA. I’m here for you!!!
Heather says:
Dear Heather and Mike,
First may I just say that Maddie would be so proud. You two are amazing!
And secondly, let me know how I can help. I’ll put bags together, call people, make deliveries, help families connect with other past NICU parents. Anything. I know that when my daughter was in the NICU and even more so when she came home my husband and I really could have used another family to talk to. I’d love to support you guys.

Heather, I am sure you hear this so much… I followed your and your precious family’s life daily and was heartbroken when little Maddie died so suddenly. I did post on the tribute page so I hope you saw my words.
We have never met but I think of you daily. I have to be honest that I cannot look at your blog every day now. I have a little boy and your pain seems to reach out of the computer and hold me all day when I come back to read your words and check on you.
What I want you to know is that, despite not visiting every day now, I absolutely think of you every day. When I do, I send love and healing thoughts out to you. Your sweet girl was such a bright light and you are too. Please know that there are others out in the world who acknowledge your loss and feel a small part of your pain.

What an amazing thing to come out of such a tragedy. Thank you for doing this for those families that will indeed need it. We also had a NICU baby, he was there 2 months, and it nearly broke us monetarily and in spirit.
