The Special Olympics

Over the next few weeks I am going to tell you about Molly and Kerry Hincka. Molly is an athlete for Special Olympics Team USA’s track and field team, and Kerry is her awesome mom.

Before I get into Molly and Kerry’s journey, I wanted to talk about Special Olympics – its history, its mission, and its growth.

Special Olympics is a non-profit organization that was officially founded in 1968 by Eunice Kennedy-Shriver. But it got it’s grassroots start in June 1962, when Eunice started “Camp Shriver” in her own backyard as a place where children and adults with intellectual disabilities could enjoy a variety of sports and activities.

Since then, Special Olympics have evolved to a global movement that provides 3.1 million athletes with intellectual disabilities from 185 countries, the opportunity to reinforce their self-esteem, to discover their special abilities, and become active and useful members of their societies.

I also want to remind you that for every person that becomes a fan of the Thank You Mom Facebook page and/or leaves a comment, Procter and Gamble will donate $1 to support Special Olympics Team USA’s trip to Athens—up to $250,000. You can also create your own “Thank You Mom” video on the Facebook page – it’s amazing!

The Special Olympics is a truly amazing organization. All their volunteers and the parents who help their athletes and the athletes themselves all have hearts of gold. I helped train a few of the Special Olympic kids a bit more than 10 years ago. I had a blast and the kids I helped did great!

I have two family members in Special Olympics, and to see the joy on their faces is absolutely AMAZING! They have such pride in themselves, win or lose.

I love your blog. I read it every day as part of my morning routine. I love to see the adventures of the amazing Annabel!
