Stow Away

by Heather on July 15, 2008

in Heather,the famous Madeline

I’ve spent a lot more time away from Maddie than your average new parent. Because of the ten weeks she spent in the NICU, I am used to sleeping away from her. Not that it makes things any easier, but it is what it is.

This weekend, Mike and I are going to San Francisco. We desperately need a weekend away, one where we can recharge our batteries and spend time with friends and adults and SLEEP. Oh, the sleep. We need uninterrupted sleep so very badly.

For the last couple weeks, Mike and I have been telling Maddie that she and Rigby are going to Camp Grandma & Grandpa. My parents are generously taking both of them for the long weekend. They seem pretty excited about four straight days of Maddie and Rigby, although I’m sure they’re forgetting that Maddie doesn’t sleep through the night and Rigby fancies herself a guard dog.

I’ve been really excited about this trip for months. Yet tonight, when I was packing, I started to feel really sad about leaving my baby for four days. I don’t know why I’m willingly leaving her. I already don’t get enough time with her, what with working full-time. Obviously Maddie feels the same way.

That picture made me “awwwww” out loud. Have a great trip!

aaaawww she’s gorgeous!

What I wouldn’t give for a full nights sleep – sadly, even on the nights that Erin does sleep through I don’t because I’m waiting for her to wake. It’s bloody mad!

That photo makes her look so looong. Little girl is growing up! Have fun and sleep well this weekend.

PS – Hubs and I often joke that the perfect vacation is a bottle of Ambien and a hotel with a tempur-pedic mattress.

She’s so cute as a stow away. If this is like the underground railroad…you can stash her at my place. ;) Can’t wait to see you!! xoxo.

I felt the same way the first time I slept away from the girls (when we were in Israel). I handed the girls over to my mother- who was there at the time and they slept with her at my grandfathers house. It was awesome. I felt free. I slept in. But when we woke up form our bear like slumber we missed our little potatoes. You need this time to de-stress young lady. Dont go developing TMJ.!

Oh that picture is amazing.

I have consistently been kind of a nutbar about leaving Simon at home. We didn’t take a real overnight type trip until he was 18-months-old. We flew up to NYC and partied with old college friends and had an epic amount of fun. I’m so glad I did it. But dude? I cried the ENTIRE time we were at the airport. Like hysterical insane bawling. Hysterical. And I wrote him a letter before we left and hid it in his stuff in case we died in a fiery plane crash. And I almost chickened out entirely.

But let me reiterate: MAN we had a blast. I hope you guys have a wonderful time in San Francisco. I’ve only been once but it ranks very high in my all time favorite places. Plus, bloggy friends and adults and funfunfun!

I haven’t left Alex overnight yet–mainly because I’ve not found someone who will take him–and I think I’d be pretty nervous the first time. Like The Sex.

That picture is just plain adorable! I know what you mean about leaving her. We haven’t left our little bean with anyone overnight yet and frankly it’s not happening any time soon but man, oh man, could I use the break. Enjoy yourself!! SF is a blast!

That is the best picture–EVER! Totally cure! I know, moms always feel guilty no matter what, but you deserve the time. Enjoy it! And SLEEP ALL YOU CAN!! Have fun! :)

loooove the lounging! Try to have fun and ignore the inevitable mommy guilt that comes from leaving your baby. She’ll be fine, and will be so excited to see you when you get back! (actually, Lucy always seems mildly pissed off when I come back after an absense, but Maddie seems a lot more agreeable about that sort of thing)! And how great for your parents to get chance to really bond with her. Hurray for vacations!

maddie looks kinda staunch about coming too. (but very cute). my husband and i had our “honeymoon” earlier this year and my mum and brother took our daughter (4) and son (4 months). our daughter often does overnights with her grandma but we had never left the both of them before. it was great but we also found overselves missing our beautiful tyrants – not enough to come home early though.

That’s the cutest pic EVER! I know what it’s like to leave a baby. I left my 1st-born 2-month-old for 2 nights! As long as they’re alive and happy when you get back, it’s all good.

16 Anissa@Hope4Peyton July 16, 2008 at 1:28 pm

That is a fab picture of her looking all smoothly hip with those little arms behind her head. Luuv it!

Here’s a depressing fact for you…10 years and 3 kids later, I haven’t had a full night’s peaceful rest in almost 11 years.

17 Leslie July 17, 2008 at 10:05 am

Maddie looks pretty comfy there! Have a great time at Blogher and sleep, sleep, sleep when you can cuz you both deserve it! I’m so tired right now I want to prop my eyelids open with toothpicks.

When my third child was not quite two, my husband determined that we HAD to get away for some time to ourselves and booked us a trip to Cozumel, Mexico. The entire time I was packing, my daughter kept putting her toothbrush in my suitcase which made me feel so guilty that I couldn’t quit crying.
Long story short- by the time the vacation was over and we were in the airport in Mexico waiting for our flight to come home, I was sobbing with the sadness of having to come home because we had SO much fun and that trip is part of the reason that twenty-one years later, we are still married and happy. AND the daughter who kept sticking her toothbrush in my suitcase?
She’s married and she and her husband are living with us.
Sigh.
Time for another trip to Mexico.
I hope y’all had a wonderful time and I’m sure that beautiful child will have had a wonderful time with her grandparents.
