in Binky, Heather, no one's in the hospital, pregnancy is...fun?

Only one baby in there, I swear
13 weeks 1 day

seriously, only one baby.
17 weeks 2 days

Binky Belly 24w3d
24 weeks 3 days

Binky is moving along well, and it is such a comfort and relief. Things have been a little bit rougher for me but nothing awful. My sudden crazy upper back and neck pain has been super annoying but it all checks out OK and it’s nothing I can’t handle. My blood pressure has been kind of wild. High one day (132/83 is significantly above my baseline BP), and then extremely low the next day (83/40 is low for ANYONE). It makes taking my blood pressure every day feel like my own weigh-in scene on The Biggest Loser – I never know what the number is going to be.

I actually ended up calling Labor and Delivery over the weekend when my pressure stayed persistently low and I spoke with the on-call doctor. There was talk of me going int0 L&D for monitoring, but it was decided I’d stay home with clear instructions on when to come in and luckily I never got to that point. Two years ago I was admitted to the hospital with Madeline still in my belly. Walking into Labor and Delivery two years later (to the day) would have seriously tripped my brain.

I spend most of my days taking it easy. Dr. Risky wants me to be careful, but I’m not on bed rest so I can still go out, as long as I don’t over exert myself. Mike has been WONDERFUL picking up my slack, but sometimes I gotta get out of the house and grocery shop with him.

my sweet ride at Trader Joe's

What, like Mike is going to let me walk through the store? I can’t get away with anything around here.

    Cute belly!

Isn’t it so nice there are riding carts? At least you can grocery shop still.

You still manage to look pretty gangsta on that scooter cart thingy. *Hugs* to you & Binky.

    Lol, love yer wheels!!

You have such an awesomely cute baby belly!

Sending you lots of love, hugs, wishes for less wildness in bp and lots of kicks, jabs, etc to make sure that you know Binky is doing fine and getting stronger each day. Also thinking that back and neck problems sound like a fine reason for a massage

You look great! I hope your BP stuff gets resolved soon. Dr. Risky sounds excellent so I’m sure you’re being well taken care of, but I know if it were me I’d be obsessing about the BP.. And I hope your back/neck pain stops, too. Glad things are progressing well. Wishing you the best day you can possibly have. (((hugs)))

    12 Ann October 29, 2009 at 2:13 am

Haha! My mom broke her right ankle while I was at school. Her car is manual so she couldn’t drive and couldn’t leave the house without some serious help and a driver. When I came home for Thanksgiving, there was talk of her using one of those so she could come to the grocery with me, but I vetoed that. More often than not, it’s people so fat they can’t even support their own weight constantly backing down the aisle. And it’s not like they came into to store with one; most of them waddle into the store and use the provided scooters. So I went to the grocery alone. It was absolutely freezing and I had to buy like a month’s-worth of food for my mom in addition to the beer for me and my mom’s cigarettes. I left that Kroger lookin classy.
But you’re pregnant. I don’t think people will give the evil eye to a pregnant woman. Otherwise, lay the guilt on them.

    13 Cathie October 29, 2009 at 8:03 am

Please be careful what you say. First of all, grouping people together like this is called stereotyping, and is drastically unfair to those that do not fall into this category, like myself. I am an amputee. I have been having lots of trouble getting my new prosthesis to fit correctly. In order to be able to do as much as I’d like with my son at home, I try to walk as little as possible while not at home because of the pain I’m in. So, I DO use a motorized cart at the store. But you would probably say it’s because I’m fat. Because, I am that too. Secondly, it really isn’t right for you to judge those who are overweight and using the carts, even if their weight is the sole reason they are using the carts. You don’t know the reason for their weight problems. Maybe they had severe emotioal abuse as a child. Maybe they have a thyroid condition that is not well controlled. Regardless of the reason, they could be beautiful, loving, nurturing, funny, people. Why be so mean-spirited when referencing them? None of us are perfect. This is not to say that I shouldn’t take responsibility for my health and my weight. But that’s just it. It is for me to handle, with the love and support of my family and friends. You can take care of the imperfections in your own life and stop passing judgement on others. Thank you.

    14 Shambree October 29, 2009 at 9:00 am

Thank you for sharing that reply, Cathie. The tone of that comment didn’t sit well with me either. It lacked compassion and sounded unnecessarily mean.

Heather, you look beautiful. I always think about Maddie, you and your family and I check your blog every day to see how you are doing, even though I have never commented before.

    15 Rah October 29, 2009 at 10:03 am

Thank you, Cathie. Agree! Someone said recently that is the last safe prejudice: People who wouldn’t dream of making such a comment about race or gender feel completely free to mock or denigrate people who are obese/fat/overweight. Yes, some do need more self-control, but that’s not the whole explanation, it is a symptom. Go to an OA meeting sometime and listen to people weep at their inability to stop killing themselves, and get a little empathy. We all have limitations in our lives; it’s just that for the obese person, the limitation shows.

Oh, and Heather, you are beautiful, inside and out! Thanks for sharing your journey with us.

    16 Laura October 29, 2009 at 10:57 am

Rah, you hit the nail on the head! It is so true that overweight people are the last ones we are allowed to make fun of these days! It is awful!! How do we expect young kids to have a healthy body image when we say that people are slobs or disgusting?

You also made such a good point that many people with weight issues have the same type of disease as those with drinking, gambling or other addiction problems, yet we have no sympathy for those that are heavy. People that are overweight simply choose a different escape, have a different drug of choice, and like Rah said, their decisions show ALL the time. If you are an alcoholic, cutter, drug addict, sex addict, etc. etc., you don’t have to go around with a sign around your neck that tells everyone all about your demons. If you have issues with food or overeating, there is no hiding it from the outside world. I think it is despicable that we are STILL making fun of fat people. It is time for all of us to grow up!

    17 Ann October 29, 2009 at 10:07 am

I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to offend anyone. Sometimes, after I take an Ambien (and don’t get away from means of communication), I write text messages, emails, and on Facebook and with all of them, I’m not able to moderate myself because of the Ambien, if that makes sense. I end up saying wild things that are totally out of my personality. I did not want to offend anyone. I think I was just thinking it would be anecdotal but it obviously came off as wildly offensive and mean-spirited. I’m sorry.
And yes, Heather looks wonderful. I guess I should preempt this comment by saying I mean this in the best possible way: I want you to get as big as possible! That way, Binky stays in her home for a while.

    18 Cathie October 29, 2009 at 10:53 am

Thank you for your apology, Ann. It takes a humble person to come forward when they’ve offended others. Hopefully in the future you will look at others, especially those in motorized carts, with a bit more compassion.

    19 cj October 29, 2009 at 1:31 pm

i agree, Cathie. i think that it takes a very humble person to admit that they made a mistake and “spoke” too quickly and without thought for others……it would have been so easy for Ann to hide behind the anonymity of the internet and not apologize. nice job ‘fessing up’, Ann…..that took both humility and class.

i already commented earlier today but wanted to say again, Heather you look wonderful and we are all so happy to see your growing belly. :)

    20 rita October 30, 2009 at 6:39 am

Ann, I too learned the hard way that Ambien and the internet just shouldn’t be used together!!! I stopped taking it because I was thinking that I wasn’t sleeping, so I’d get up in the middle of the night and read and eat and drink for a couple of hours. I only know that I did this by finding the evidence the next morning. Scary stuff.

46 red pen mama October 29, 2009 at 5:12 am

I was put on modified bed rest when I was pregnant with Kate (v low fluid). It was December, and I got all panicked because we still had Christmas shopping to do. So Dan and I went, with Flora, to Target and he FORCED me to use one of those. I was equally mortified he was so insistant, and touched that he was so concerned.

I didn’t mind it, but those things are LOUD backing up. You could see people checking out the seemingly healthy mom wheeling around in one of those, but it was important to take it easy. I wish I had had a bigger baby belly.

You’re looking good. Listen to Dr. Risky & Mike. They are looking out for you too.

LOVE those belly shots. No matter how sick or awful you feel, those right there are visual proof that Binky is doing just fine.

Speaking of the awfulness, though, can you get a prenatal massage (the kind where you lie on your side)? It might help with the neck & upper back pain. I know you’re doing physical therapy too, just wondering if a little massage might help.

    Hi Heather! Cute ride! :)

Glad Binkys doing well. I had to tell you this – I’ve been reading your blog for a while (probably since April…) and just yesterday was telling my husband about you and how lucky we are (we have a very healthy 14 month old little boy, Cayden). Last evening, after having just told my husband about you, I took Cayden on his first trick-or-treating adventure in my grandma’s retirement home. As I got on the elevator, I saw to my left, a little girl (maybe 2) dressed as Abby Cadabby. Before your blog, I had NO idea who that was. It made me think of Maddie and you. I just wanted to let you know that at that moment, I kissed my little guy and squeezed him hard and said an extra prayer for you & Mike & Binky.

I had well documented humiliation riding on the cart. I had to as well. And, yeah…embarrassing, much?

    Binky is so damn cute.

    As are you.xo

And I am so happy that binky is doing well. I have only just discovered your blog, and I don’t understand why I am so drawn to it. I have been here, since yesterday, at least 10 times, and every time, I end up in tears. I don’t know why I keep coming back, because it seriously crushes me to be here, but something about your story draws me in. I have a healthy 9 month old daughter, and I think my life would end if anything happened to her. In fact, your blog upsets me so much that I cried in my car on my way home last night, thinking of “Cold Marble.” I cannot imagine anything worse in this life than having my daughter in an urn.

I am sorry- I meant this to be a much more uplifting post, and it has turned into a soliloquy on how devastated *I* feel based on your story. Ultimately, I think I just wanted to tell you that Madeline’s story is out there. I am one of thousands of people who is crying with you. At the same time, I am someone who is praying with you and wishing you great joy with Binky.

I have always felt bad for siblings of children who have died, particularly those who come after the death. I imagine that those children do not get the same mother they would have had were it not for the tragedy, and that in some sense they must feel like they can never be the child the mother lost. But in your case, I can really see you trying to create joy surrounding Binky as an individual and to treating her not only as Maddie’s sister, but in some ways as a rebirth. Of you.

God bless you. I am crying again, tears that I do not feel belong to me. Perhaps I can cry for you today.
