Driving Rain

by Heather on March 1, 2012

in Heather, Jackie!

So my drive to San Francisco. That is something I never want to do again. Except that I have to do it again in a few days. I am so tempted to abandon my car here and fly back to LA.

The drive started out great. A lot of you suggested I download an audio book, so I did (I went with Mindy Kaling’s Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me, super funny). I had my No Kid Music playlist prepped, and I even attached a remote to my camera and set it on a tripod on the front seat. I got a new tank of gas and a jumbo bag of Cinnamon Bears. I was ready.

ready to go

The first hour of the drive was great. Mindy was telling me hilarious stories, and I was making good time. I was anxious to get to a certain part of the 101 freeway, where the road turns away from the ocean. I really wanted to stop there and take pictures.

But when I got there, my driving directions app beeped that there was rain ahead. For some reason, I thought the best idea would be to skip the photo shoot and instead drive as fast as I could TOWARD the rain. Like, somehow by driving fast I would avoid it? Except, like I said, I was driving TOWARD the rain, so driving quickly wasn’t going to help me miss the rain – it was going to get me wet sooner. Obviously, this is extremely flawed logic.

As I drove, I was had my eyes open for the dark rain clouds. I could see them, but I could also see blue sky, so I was surprised when it was suddenly raining.

RAIN

And then, it was suddenly really raining. I told Mindy to shut up, and I gripped the steering wheel. It was the kind of rain that hits so fast that the roads don’t have time to absorb it. Cars around me started hydroplaning and skidding off the road. Then the hard rain stopped, and this weird foggy mist suddenly surrounded me, but since the sun was still somehow shining, the foggy mist was bright white. I couldn’t see more than maybe ten feet in front of the car. It was at this point I decided driving and screaming were not fun. I pulled over onto the shoulder and watched a few more cars skid out. I drove on the shoulder until I reached an exit, and I sat in the parking lot of a McDonald’s until the skies cleared. The most amazing thing about this is that I did not buy an Apple Pie.

The rest of my drive was pretty, even with the occasional downpour:

grey skies
the open road

moo
moo

wine grows on trees
where wine is born

I stopped once to refill my tank, and I bought three coffee drinks with varying levels of caffeine. Right now, more than seven hours after my last sip, I am still jittery. But at least I didn’t fall asleep on the road, right? I can sleep tomorrow…or Friday.

I finally arrived in San Francisco eight hours after I left home. After driving around the neighborhood for 25 minutes, I found parking and was reunited with Jackie!. We promptly got pizzas and gossiped and watched hilarious TV. The crazy rain-soaked drive was forgotten.

I take it back – I would drive back to San Francisco in a second.

I’m so happy you made it safe and somewhat sound, Heather! I hope you and Jackie! have an amazing time together. I have no clue but even though I’ve never met you and probably never will, you seem like one of my friends. I can’t wait to read your blog in the mornings and last night I was thinking about how much fun you and Jackie! must have been having at that very moment. Enjoy and have a safe trip home!!!!

Whew!! I’m glad you made it safe and the only rain was literal and not metaphorical. Cuddle up with your Jackie. Thinking of you.

So glad you made it safely and that you were smart enough to not chance it and wait out the blinding rain a bit.

Finding parking in San Fran can take forever! My brother and sister-in-law live in the Marina and I was just there last weekend…circling the neighborhood for what seemed like an hour trying to find somewhere, anywhere to park!

Enjoy your beautiful friend in the beautiful city :)

Heather, I am so happy that you are safe and warm and soaking up the good stuff.

I don’t drive a whole lot myself. Hubby and I share a car because we work together, and gas is crazy expensive and we pretty much go to mostly the same places anyhow, and such. When I do drive, it is to the essential places–you know, like Old Navy!–and such. I haven’t done a long drive by myself ever, and I am so impressed by you!

Sending hugs to you and Jackie! and best wishes for a safe, DRY drive back.

Poor you! We had that rain, too. I was just leaving my tax preparer’s office when it started. I pulled over and waited for it to stop also. Not fun driving when you can’t see the road. I’m glad you made it safely and hope you and Jackie! have a wonderful time together. Weather should be a lot better for your drive home. And it is a beautiful drive.

P.S. I know what you mean about trying to find parking in SF. Ridiculous! My daughter lives on Fell Street and I park on the street blocking her driveway. Apparently that’s legal there unless someone complains.

I use a canon 7D!

20 LisaJ March 2, 2012 at 9:26 am

Me, too! Love my 7D, though it has been a challenge to learn. Did you upgrade? I got my 7D when my Rebel stopped working suddenly several months back and I couldn’t wait for a repair, and Whoa….it is a lot more complex, but worth it.

yes, I upgraded back in June after I wore out the second shutter on my rebel XSi. It wasn’t under warranty anymore and replacing it was going to be…pricey. So we decided it was time to upgrade. I love it, though – I read the For Dummies book and have really enjoyed the control the 7D has given me! glad you like yours, too!

This is kind of California :) I hate driving in heavy rain too, but since I live in Virginia, it’s inevitable. I figured you were going to say it rained like this for the entire trip. I’ve done drives like that and they’re AWFUL.

I’m glad you made it up there safe and the rain was the worst part of it. Have fun!

Is there a reason you take 101 rather than 5? Wouldn’t 5 be a lot faster? Just asking…..

Reply

25 Heather March 2, 2012 at 8:26 am

Two reasons : 1) I have to back track to get to the 5, so it doesn’t save me any time; and 2) the five is full of construction so it’s down to one lane in some places.

Off The Ground: the post where I announce my start up company, Airplane Beds, is finally official.

Flaming Pie: Obviously a cooking post where I burn a pie in a spectacular way.

Kisses on the Bottom: Mike pisses me off, causing him to apologize profusely and kiss my ass.

those pictures are amazing.
Heather, have you ever thought of setting up an online gallery selling some of your photos? you could totally have proceeds go to Friends of Maddie.
I certainly would buy loads of your photos, because they are so amazing (and would look great in my apartment!)

p.s. please if you do decide to set up an online gallery selling some of your photos, please make sure you ship to the UK. cause that’s where I live and I’d be sad if I couldn’t get some!
