I learned something on my flight back to Los Angeles – I have very comfortable shoulders.

Luckily, this guy (unlike the last one) was horrified and it only happened once.
The original flight I was supposed to be on was delayed by four hours. This would have put me back in California at 1:45 am. Not only was that not awesome with Annabel, but I had another flight to catch at 7:25 am the next day. I threw myself on the mercy of the American Airlines ticketing agent, and she went above and beyond to put Annie and me on another flight. A flight that turned out to be the BEST! FLIGHT! EVER!
While waiting for our flight to board, I heard an airline employee call for Doris Roberts. I looked around, and then BAM! Doris!
Marie Barone! So awesome.
Then, when Annie and I were on queue to pre-board, I saw Food Network star Paula Deen. I wasn’t surprised – when Maya and her husband dropped me at the airport, Maya immediately recognized Paula’s husband standing outside the terminal. So with that in mind, I’d been on the lookout. Still, I was surprised she was on my flight to LA instead of on one to her home state of Georgia.
First class boarded our flight first, then Annie and I boarded. Wouldn’t you know it, the line inside the plane backed up and we were stopped right at Paula’s seat. She and her husband started cooing at Annie, and of course Annie started smiling and cooing right back. Paula said to bring Annie back during the flight and she and her husband would take care of her. Uh, OK!
Of course, the flight attendants didn’t believe me later in the flight when I said I had a personal invitation from Paula to go back up to first class. WHATEVER! I patiently passed the time until the plane landed, and then I high-tailed it after Paula and her entourage. I found Mike waiting for us at the gate, gave him a quick smooch, and then ran to grab Paula. She went outside and my stomach lurched. She was leaving and I would never catch her.
But no! She saw me coming and said, “Honey, you never DID take me up on my offer to babysit that little sugar plum.” And then, because she is awesome, Annie giggled at her, and we got what I was looking for:
This officially breaks my hard and fast rule not to bother celebs with photo requests. But for Paula it was totally worth it.
I hope this means my plane karma is turning around!
*There really WAS a Rabbi on the plane. I love it when there are important men of faith on my flights – it makes me feel like the plane is less likely to go down!

Haha brilliant! My sister was sitting on a plane reading ‘The Female Eunuch’, and a woman was staring at her for quite some time… It was only afterwards that Fiona realised the woman was Germaine Greer.

How fun! Paula Deen is a real sweet heart isn’t she! My plane celeb story isn’t nearly as cool as yours but here goes. My daughter Anna and I were flying to Vegas from Minneapolis. Louie Anderson was also waiting to board our plane.
Just as we were about to board there was a delay. Turns out some idiot from the previous flight had stolen one of the lighted EXIT signs and we couldn’t fly until we got a replacement.
We finally boarded four hours later and by that time Louie had found himself another flight!

I was so excited for this post! I responded to you last night on Twitter when I saw your tweet about Paula Deen – I almost felt like I was right there with you on the plane staring at Paula! She is so sweet. I can just hear her voice, talking about your sugar plum. What a great picture. Paula is the best! And I am sure she loved you and Miss. Annabel!
That was seriously the coolest flight ever!!!
I’m SO jealous! I LOVE Paula!!!
My only celeb run in (if you call him a celeb) was at LAX. I was almost taken down by the dude that plays the oldest brother on 7th Heaven’s luggage cart. Could have cared less about a photo with him…I just swore at him under my breath!
He didn’t even apologize!!! Jerk!
JEALOUS!
I’m glad this flight was better than the first one!!
Seriously??? I have my picture with the Pioneer woman! Ree Drummond. Of course, I had to stand in a ridiculously long line with a 2 and 3 year old for about 5 hours… but dude, she is equally as awesome! lol. I love Paula and Ree… AND Heather and Annabel of course.

Wow Heather I’m so stinkin jealous. I have never saw a celeb on a flight but you did twice which is soooo awesome. You and Annie rock!
So cool! You all look so great after a flight! I once saw Vanilla Ice and Mos Def in the airpor. Not together, though.
You have some of the greatest random celebrity run-ins of anyone I know. My sister had a few when she lived in NYC, but yours are fantastic.
Wow, that flight was just chock-full of celebrities – Annie, frest off her TV debut, then Doris Roberts and Paula Deen. What are the odds?
I love Paula Deen, she is so cool! Glad you were able to catch her and have your pic taken with her. A special keepsake for Annie some day.
Hope you don’t get jetlag now. Take it easy. I myself hate to fly, I don’t feel safe unless my feet are planted on solid, flat ground! Of course, these days with sink holes popping up, and other crazy “natural disasters”, sometimes I wonder if the ground will stay solid.
:S

I met Paula at Universal Studios. She was SO nice and talked and took pictures with everyone.
Awesome!! Totally makes up for the drunk guy on the last one, right? Well almost…
LOVE Paula Deen!! I’ve thought the same way as you, once on a very bumpy overseas flight I noticed the plane was full of priests and nuns.. I instantly felt better! Surely we were going to make it! lol Love the pictures, Annie sure knows how to charm them!
Oh my gee, PAULA FREAKIN DEEN!! I love her. I am slightly jealous, I have to admit.
I am hoping to just get to visit Savannah next Summer and eat at her restaurant, but you got to meet her for real and get a picture.
Just just adds to your awesomeness!!

What Amanda said!
GACK, PAULA DEEN!!!! One of the few celebrity chefs I would totally ask for a picture! She was so super-nice, offering to take Annie off your hands for the flight – it’s truly terrible that the flight attendants didn’t believe you.
Just make sure that, as she grows up, she has a fond memory of Auntie Paula, and make sure too that you cook with butter whenever you have the opportunity.
YAY Paula Deen!!! Also, you must be very comfortable – with both annie and a stranger snuggled on your shoulders… maybe take it as a complement? lol

I just flew from NYC to Austin over the weekend and while we were in line to board the plane, Matt Damon was right behind me! I never knew this of course until we got to our seats and my brother informed me. But we were the first row after first class, so I got to stare at the back of Matt’s head for over 3 hours (and fake trips to the bathroom so I could see his lovely face). When the plane landed, I followed as well. He was really fast though. Last on the plane and first to get off. He had two people waiting for him at the gate and they boogied on out of there quick! I love celebrity sightings!
Paula Deen!!!!!!!! SO JEALOUS!! Isn’t she gorgeous?

Haha YESSSS (btw, I am @fleuredeflorida, I feel like a mild creeper responding to your tweets, I’m always thinking, she’s probably who the heck is this person lol)- I kept checking my blackberry last night to see if you had success in getting this photo and I just did a fist pump for you in my office (thankfully no one is around). I have had creepy people sleep on me & get excessively drunk on overseas flights- it’s so uncomfortable/awkward. I’m glad this flight was much better & you got a pic w/ the queen of southern food!
I LOVE Paula Deen! How lucky of you to snap a pic with Annie and P.D.!!
Awesome! I have the same rule… do not ask for pictures/ autographs.

Best flight, ever! I actually work with Food Network and Paula is nothing short of awesome.

Cool! Doris Roberts is kinda looking at you like you’re the paparazzi, but that’s probably not on purpose. I do know who Paula Deen is, but I only saw her on tv a couple times. I love her accent. I used to talk that way until I’d been out of the South for several years. It still comes out from time to time, especially if I hear someone who has the accent. … Glad you had a good flight and the guy who fell asleep on you was actually cool – when I first saw this I thought “No Way!!! Not again!!!”. You really must have comfortable shoulders though. Lucky you!
Haha how AWESOME is that!?!? She looks like so much fun. (Paula of course… haha Doris doesn’t look too thrilled.)
Very cool!!! So much better than the flight out!

That’s so cool! And LOL, on you having strong shoulders. =P
When traveling on an airplane with Annie, do you keep her in the same thing you tote her around in? (the sling you wear) or do you have some kind of special strap to secure her to you for airplane travel? Just curious. I think most slings would work just as well, right? Not that I travel on airplanes much, but I’ve often wondered how I would secure my lap-babies, if I ever did. My mother used to be a flight attendant and has some pretty horrific stories about what happens to babies/small children sitting on laps when there is a sudden change in altitude due to strong turbulance
.-= Katrina´s last blog ..Christmas Present =-.
or to anyone else reading….what have you done/do you use to secure your lap-babies?
.-= Katrina´s last blog ..Christmas Present =-.
Hi Katrina, yes, I kept her in the carrier. It’s a LilleBaby and it has a harness inside, so basically she is belted into the carrier that I attached to myself. And then I am belted into my seat! The only time I took her out was to change her diaper. I didn’t want to risk turbulence, falling asleep, etc. This way I knew she was secure!
Okay….LilleBaby….gotta remember that one
Thanks!

I SO wish I lived in L.A. sometimes just so I could gawk at some of the celebs. I’m from Kansas City and we don’t get many celebs around here. I did see Marion Ross (Mrs. C from Happy Days, pretty close to a Marie Barone in my book) at a CVS if you can believe that. She was appearing at a local dinner theatre. She was sitting and taking her blood pressure. I wasn’t fast enough to take her picture though. Being a nice Jewish girl, I’d say having a Rabbi on your flight was awesome.
That’s awesome – I always figured Paula Deen was as nice as she seemed!
hahaha! I love it! You have the FUNNIEST look on your face in that first pic!
My sister recently flew to Hawaii and while at LAX she saw the snowboarder, Shaun White. She was just inches from him. She wanted to get his autograph soooo badly but my BIL talked her out of it, said not to bother him. hmmph! People watching must be so much fun there.
Glad you had a great and safe trip home, despite the tired guy next to you. Cracks me up that of all the people to fall asleep on while flying, you get chosen twice- and you have a BABY in your arms!
great post – thank you for the laughs!
LMAO!! I was the one to fall asleep on my seatmates shoulder once. I was awakened when we hit the ground…… and talk about hirrified – not only did I fall asleep leaning in this guys seat but I had DROOL on my chin. THANK GOD he got off the plane while I continued my flight. And LMAO about the Rabbi. Whenever I go to court (which sadly, with my carzy ass ex is a lot( I always park at the Cathedral, even though closer polaces are cheaper I feel protected because I parked my car at a church. And Annie was just saying hey to one of her peers….she is, afteral, a TV star in her own right!
This just plain cracks me up. Too funny.
I LOVE Paula! How sweet that she wanted to watch Annie.

I think it is more scary to ride a plane with good people since heaven would want to take people that sin lesser.
Last fall Paula Deen was in town for a book signing and my daughter’s elementary school snagged her for an assembly (presumably about cooking with kids). Anyway, the principal called me a few weeks before and asked me to bring some of my cookies and other goodies to a reception for her. Which was awesome and terrifying at the same time. However, Ms. Deen was LOVELY and put me right at ease (by eating at least 2-3 of everything I brought, while chatting aimiably with everyone attending). I have to say, however, that you snapped the best picture (candid or otherwise) I have ever seen of her. Probably because Annie melted her heart a little first!
