A Rabbi, Doris Roberts, And Paula Deen Walk Onto A Plane…

by Heather on May 26, 2010

in Heather, the amazing Annabel

I learned something on my flight back to Los Angeles – I have very comfortable shoulders.

Luckily, this guy (unlike the last one) was horrified and it only happened once.

The original flight I was supposed to be on was delayed by four hours. This would have put me back in California at 1:45 am. Not only was that not awesome with Annabel, but I had another flight to catch at 7:25 am the next day. I threw myself on the mercy of the American Airlines ticketing agent, and she went above and beyond to put Annie and me on another flight. A flight that turned out to be the BEST! FLIGHT! EVER!

While waiting for our flight to board, I heard an airline employee call for Doris Roberts. I looked around, and then BAM! Doris!

Doris looking at me

Marie Barone! So awesome.

Then, when Annie and I were on queue to pre-board, I saw Food Network star Paula Deen. I wasn’t surprised – when Maya and her husband dropped me at the airport, Maya immediately recognized Paula’s husband standing outside the terminal. So with that in mind, I’d been on the lookout. Still, I was surprised she was on my flight to LA instead of on one to her home state of Georgia.

First class boarded our flight first, then Annie and I boarded. Wouldn’t you know it, the line inside the plane backed up and we were stopped right at Paula’s seat. She and her husband started cooing at Annie, and of course Annie started smiling and cooing right back. Paula said to bring Annie back during the flight and she and her husband would take care of her. Uh, OK!

Of course, the flight attendants didn’t believe me later in the flight when I said I had a personal invitation from Paula to go back up to first class. WHATEVER! I patiently passed the time until the plane landed, and then I high-tailed it after Paula and her entourage. I found Mike waiting for us at the gate, gave him a quick smooch, and then ran to grab Paula. She went outside and my stomach lurched. She was leaving and I would never catch her.

But no! She saw me coming and said, “Honey, you never DID take me up on my offer to babysit that little sugar plum.” And then, because she is awesome, Annie giggled at her, and we got what I was looking for:

and then she smothered us in butter.

This officially breaks my hard and fast rule not to bother celebs with photo requests. But for Paula it was totally worth it.

I hope this means my plane karma is turning around!

*There really WAS a Rabbi on the plane. I love it when there are important men of faith on my flights – it makes me feel like the plane is less likely to go down!

Haha brilliant! My sister was sitting on a plane reading ‘The Female Eunuch’, and a woman was staring at her for quite some time… It was only afterwards that Fiona realised the woman was Germaine Greer.

How fun! Paula Deen is a real sweet heart isn’t she! My plane celeb story isn’t nearly as cool as yours but here goes. My daughter Anna and I were flying to Vegas from Minneapolis. Louie Anderson was also waiting to board our plane.

Just as we were about to board there was a delay. Turns out some idiot from the previous flight had stolen one of the lighted EXIT signs and we couldn’t fly until we got a replacement.

We finally boarded four hours later and by that time Louie had found himself another flight!

Hope you don’t get jetlag now. Take it easy. I myself hate to fly, I don’t feel safe unless my feet are planted on solid, flat ground! Of course, these days with sink holes popping up, and other crazy “natural disasters”, sometimes I wonder if the ground will stay solid.

I just flew from NYC to Austin over the weekend and while we were in line to board the plane, Matt Damon was right behind me! I never knew this of course until we got to our seats and my brother informed me. But we were the first row after first class, so I got to stare at the back of Matt’s head for over 3 hours (and fake trips to the bathroom so I could see his lovely face). When the plane landed, I followed as well. He was really fast though. Last on the plane and first to get off. He had two people waiting for him at the gate and they boogied on out of there quick! I love celebrity sightings! :)

I was totally cracking up watching your twitter feed yesterday. I’d love to have met Doris Roberts. I’d have no idea what to say to Paula Deen, though… “Hey cool, you’re famous but I’m on something like a permanent diet and I can’t eat ANYTHING you cook?”

When traveling on an airplane with Annie, do you keep her in the same thing you tote her around in? (the sling you wear) or do you have some kind of special strap to secure her to you for airplane travel? Just curious. I think most slings would work just as well, right? Not that I travel on airplanes much, but I’ve often wondered how I would secure my lap-babies, if I ever did. My mother used to be a flight attendant and has some pretty horrific stories about what happens to babies/small children sitting on laps when there is a sudden change in altitude due to strong turbulance :(

or to anyone else reading….what have you done/do you use to secure your lap-babies?

Hi Katrina, yes, I kept her in the carrier. It’s a LilleBaby and it has a harness inside, so basically she is belted into the carrier that I attached to myself. And then I am belted into my seat! The only time I took her out was to change her diaper. I didn’t want to risk turbulence, falling asleep, etc. This way I knew she was secure!

Awesome! I was really enjoying your tweets from the flight. (also, this post for some reason reminded me that my boss’ wife dressed up their baby as a stick of butter for Halloween. Paula Deen would have loved that)

I SO wish I lived in L.A. sometimes just so I could gawk at some of the celebs. I’m from Kansas City and we don’t get many celebs around here. I did see Marion Ross (Mrs. C from Happy Days, pretty close to a Marie Barone in my book) at a CVS if you can believe that. She was appearing at a local dinner theatre. She was sitting and taking her blood pressure. I wasn’t fast enough to take her picture though. Being a nice Jewish girl, I’d say having a Rabbi on your flight was awesome.

hahaha! I love it! You have the FUNNIEST look on your face in that first pic!

My sister recently flew to Hawaii and while at LAX she saw the snowboarder, Shaun White. She was just inches from him. She wanted to get his autograph soooo badly but my BIL talked her out of it, said not to bother him. hmmph! People watching must be so much fun there.

Glad you had a great and safe trip home, despite the tired guy next to you. Cracks me up that of all the people to fall asleep on while flying, you get chosen twice- and you have a BABY in your arms!

great post – thank you for the laughs!

LMAO!! I was the one to fall asleep on my seatmates shoulder once. I was awakened when we hit the ground…… and talk about hirrified – not only did I fall asleep leaning in this guys seat but I had DROOL on my chin. THANK GOD he got off the plane while I continued my flight. And LMAO about the Rabbi. Whenever I go to court (which sadly, with my carzy ass ex is a lot( I always park at the Cathedral, even though closer polaces are cheaper I feel protected because I parked my car at a church. And Annie was just saying hey to one of her peers….she is, afteral, a TV star in her own right!

I once rode in an elevator with Ted Shackleford (Gary from Knots Landing). But it was a hospital elevator and I was in my scrubs so I thought it might be slightly unprofessional to ask him to sign them. Out here in Oklahoma that’s about as good as a celeb sighting gets! I LOVE Paula!!!

Great flight! I love it…..and the pics too!

I have to admit I thought I had the safest flight ever when Sen John McCain sat three rows in front of me last fall on my way to Sesame Street!

I thought….
1. There’s gotta be a marshal on board
2. Hey, isn’t McCain a pilot
3. Of course, the pilots know who they’ve got onboard!

Slept like a baby on that flight!!

My only brush with fame was meeting Walter Matthau and Tim Robbins while they were filming IQ in Princeton. Walter Matthau was so nice he even gave me a bottle of water,

Last fall Paula Deen was in town for a book signing and my daughter’s elementary school snagged her for an assembly (presumably about cooking with kids). Anyway, the principal called me a few weeks before and asked me to bring some of my cookies and other goodies to a reception for her. Which was awesome and terrifying at the same time. However, Ms. Deen was LOVELY and put me right at ease (by eating at least 2-3 of everything I brought, while chatting aimiably with everyone attending). I have to say, however, that you snapped the best picture (candid or otherwise) I have ever seen of her. Probably because Annie melted her heart a little first! :D
