Yesterday was my halfway ultrasound, with all the bells and whistles and the like. I always look forward to seeing The Acrobat, but I wasn’t exactly looking forward to this ultrasound because they make you drink a lot of water in a short period of time. Dr. Risky doesn’t require me to have a full bladder for ultrasounds, so this isn’t normally an issue. I did my best to show up with a full-for-me bladder (since I am always borderline-dehydrated, my bladder is only full about three times a day). Luckily that seemed to do the trick, and I only had to choke down one paper cup of water. I managed to keep that down until halfway through the ultrasound, so we all considered that a win.
I think the other reason I wasn’t crazy-excited for the ultrasound was I knew the tech performing it wouldn’t tell me anything. I learned that lesson the hard way during Annie’s pregnancy. I got situated on the table – it was freeeeezing, so the tech offered me a blanket for my arms – and she got started. If I craned my head all the way to the right, and tilted it until I felt like my neck ligaments were stretched to their snapping point, I could kinda sorta see the screen.
Mike had a great view, though.
The tech was, like I expected, quiet. Luckily, she was friendly and offered to print out pictures for us at the end. That meant that I was laying on the table, in silence, for about 45 minutes. I started to fall asleep. Okay, I actually did nod off a couple times. The blanket was warm! And 45 minutes of silence is rare.
The Acrobat was, as the tech said, a mover. Glad to hear he’s still living up to his name. He also, like his sisters before him, did not want to give the tech a look at his genitals. But because he was so wiggly, she finally got a good picture of them about two minutes before the end of the scan.
The first and last time I post a picture of a penis.
I was glad she got a shot of his man-bidness, because I would have spent the rest of the pregnancy thinking, “What if the other tech made a mistake? What if it’s actually a girl?” Basically, I would have driven everyone around me more crazy than usual.
The pictures the tech gave us were great.
I should be hearing from Dr. Risky sometime in the next day or two with all the results from the scan.
When we got home, we showed Annie the pictures, and when she saw the one above she said, “He’s got a nose! I’ve got a nose, too!!” Then, “Gramma! My brudder has a nose!””
Who knew noses were so exciting?
Abigail says:
Glad you got that shot. People have said to me that maybe my tech made a mistake about our baby being a boy. All I say to that is, if it’s not a boy then our girl has some serious junk. It was unmistakable.
Sorry your tech wasn’t very chatty but at least you got some adorable photos out of the deal. His profile is the sweetest.
Gwensarah says:
I managed to call what my son would look like almost exactly just based on his ultrasound pictures, if I still possess this weird super power I think that The Acrobat’s face is going to be a blend of both Annie and Maddie. Maddie around the nose and eyes and Annie’s mouth and chin.
Hopefully with russet curls
Heather says:
Annie said to me out of the blue this morning, “My brudder is going to have big blue eyes, like Maddie!” So I think she agrees with you.
JustAMom says:
Believe it! I have a friend who was pregnant and her son would come in every morning and “kiss the baby” – (kiss mom’s belly) – one day he didn’t do it and she asked if he was going to kiss the baby and he said “no, the baby isn’t there anymore” and sure enough, that afternoon, an ultrasound showed no heartbeat. They were understandably devestated. Months later, he pops off with “Mom, your baby is back” – she rand to the drugstore, bought a pregancy test and sure enough….. preggo! Kids know these things……. can’t wait to see the acrobats blue eyes! And no, they don’t question ANYTHING that kid says anymore!!!! He has more power than he realizes, lol!!
Gwensarah says:
Yup, Annie sees him the same way. With Maddie’s beautiful aquamarine eyes. I still think his hair is going to be a shade that’s not as light as Maddie’s but more red than Annie’s. Like mohagany or russet.
You are going to love having a little boy! Remember how Annie totally wanted Mike all the time and you felt a little left out? Completely the opposite, at first he’s going to be all about Mama but tell Mike that little boys snuggle just as much as little girls and everything he did with Maddie and Annie is perfect for a boy too. That’s where his son will learn that daddies are just as tender as mommies and that will leave an impression his whole life.
Is Annie suggesting names for her “brudder” ? My son had a list picked out at her age for the sisters that he wished I would give him.
Kayla says:
I know this is terrible, but in that first picture it almost looks like he’s pointing to it! I know, I know, I’ll go sit in the corner now.
(And. He. Is. So. CUTE!!)
Riley says:
No I see that too it kinda looks like “I want YOU to know I’m a boy” lol
Heather says:
TOTALLY! You can see his hand right above it! LOL.
Jenn says:
20 weeks!!! WOOT, WOOT!!! WAY TO GO MAMA!!!! SOOO PROUD OF YOU!!! I know it’s been a long haul even up to this point but look at your Amazing, HEALTHY baby boy!!! He’s AMAZING & so are you!!! I’m so happy for you guys!!! Time is going to fly and you’ll be holding you’re beautiful son before you know it! I know you don’t share the name until after your babies are born but, do you have this name picked out yet? I’m sure whatever his name is will be great – just like Maddie’s & Annie’s names are!! What a lucky little boy to be born to you & Mike as his parents!!! He’s life will be filled with LOVE, FUN, LAUGHTER and MUSIC!!! SO AWESOME!!! xoxo
Heather says:
We’re pretty sure we have a name, but we don’t share until after the baby arrives!
Jenn says:
Yes, I remembered that, that’s why I didn’t ask him name, only if you had one yet….You trained me well! ha ha Can’t wait to hear his name after he’s born. I hope this finds you well.
Jaime Maynard says:
Awwww the littlest penis. So sweet. So happy for you all.
Megan says:
OK, I feel like a pervert…but can someone please explain where the genitals are in the first picture? It looks like a few random blobs to me. In the other ones, I can clearly make out the head and the legs, but that one is a mystery. I called over my co-worker, who’s had two kids, and she couldn’t figure it out either.
Sara says:
I think that’s a shot from the bottom up, as if the baby were sitting on the camera with legs spread. So the blobs to the right and left are the undersides of his legs, and the blob in the middle is the penis/scrotum. I have 2 boys and I remember something similar.
I am learning that it’s especially stressful being pregnant with a girl, as there is just no blob in the middle, and constant worry that stuff is hiding and it’s not a girl after all!
Congratulations Heather! I can’t wait to see more pictures of your son!
Megan says:
Ah, now I see it. Thanks for the explanation.
Heather says:
Yep, Sara is right. As Annie would say, “there’s his buuuuuuuuut.”
Auntie_M says:
Phew! I had just figured this out (thanks to the other comment about his hand pointing at his penis) and then these comments totally confirmed that I saw what I saw. So funny as I had no trouble with the other pix of this beautiful boy…just the one proving that he is, indeed, a beautiful BOY!! LOL
Elizabeth says:
Heck, my first thought was: He’s got Annie’s nose! Congrats Hope you start feeling better!
Sarah says:
I have the exact same kind of shot of my son. I remember the tech pulling that shot up on the screen and that was how we learned we were having a boy. And then I STILL worried that she was wrong. Congratulations! Also, yay for being halfway through!
Lisa says:
I concur! He’s got Annie’s nose. They are going to look alike! He is sooo cute and will be a quick mover for sure. Keep getting some rest
Rach says:
I have always tried to tell people that you CAN see that babies have a family resemblance, even in a halfway ultrasound. HE HAS ANNIE’S NOSE!!!!!!!!
Mommy says:
He totally has Annie’s little button nose. So cute!!!
Rebecca says:
The photo of his ‘business’ looks like his ‘ahem’ is huge.
Heather says:
I totally thought that too!!! hahaha!
Kelly says:
Cute. Glad you got the money shot of the boyness. Clears things up for everyone.
Julie says:
I’m going on record right now as saying he’ll end up being named…
Jack!
Astral says:
Congratulations!! I’m so happy for you
Tara says:
Yay baby boy! He’s so cute and look at that profile: I think he might have the same darling nose that Annie has. What do you think?
Precious boy!
Heather says:
It definitely looks like he has her nose!!!
Tara says:
I love it!!!
JustAMom says:
Reading this and below I see Annie’s witch picture from Halloween…… can’t wait to see pics of Annie and her brudder at Halloween this year!!
Heather says:
Annie is VERY excited for Halloween, too! It’s going to be a long ten months.
Alexis says:
He is amazing! I’m so excited for all of you!
Jenny says:
I actually have a friend who had several ultrasounds and ws told it was a girl. then she delivered a boy. But I don’t think this usually happens in reverse. It is hard to mistake boy parts for girl parts.
Auntie_M says:
Oh, there’s been ooops, it’s actually a girl, not a boy mistakes made when they don’t have an awesome/obvious shot like this & the cord gets mistaken for a penis. That’s why shots like this are great. Definitely a boy…a (ahem!) rather big boy, if I do say so myself!
nona says:
Yep, I see that button-nose in there, too. Kinda serendipitous how you received the silhouette necklace charm over the weekend, and got such a clear view of The Acrobat’s profile a few days later.
Nancy says:
LOVE it!! Congrats again!!!!
Auntie_M says:
Noses are VERY important! Especially when they are so cute and similar!!!!
Congrats on the halfway mark!!! And on the great pictures!!!
You are in my prayers daily — for a safe & healthy pregnancy, baby, and delivery. And, Heather, for your teeth!! Ever since someone commented on her teeth falling out at the age of 28, because of HG, I’ve been freakin’ about your teeth. I’m weird. What can I say?
Anyway, congrats again! Tell Annie I’m impressed that she found her baby brudder’s nose on the US! Very impressive!
Annalisa says:
He’s looking good. Good job, mama!
Wait until the acrobat runs out of room! He’ll give you the “moar room darn it” kicks. And then you’re going to be “Help! Parental abuse!” (the way the husband rolled his eyes at me that last month whenever I said that is one of the few ‘favorites’ in that pregnancy :P).
The ninja is still a kicker, by the way.
TracyKM says:
Annie didn’t ask where the bottle went? LOL.
It’s hard when you’re getting any sort of service and the provider isn’t chatty. I went back to your linked post to refresh my memory, and I’m surprised at the comments about the tech being rude/poor job. Techs are just that…techs. Not doctors. They’re not allowed to tell you anything. Even if there’s some sort of very obvious issue, they are not allowed to tell you; it has to come from a doctor. Many U/S techs are recent immigrants who are actually doctors in their home country, but can’t meet the requirements to work as a doctor here. Here, we don’t get U/S done at OB offices, you have to go to an U/S clinic, and now they’re not even allowed to tell you the gender, due to cultural bias towards some genders and the horrible things some parents will do if it’s the “wrong” gender
How wonderful for you to experience this pregnancy through Annie!
Expat Mom says:
He has Annie’s nose! So cute already. Can’t wait to “meet” him. Well, I can, because I want you to go to term, of course, but when it’s time, I’ll be almost as excited as when I had my babies.
