I didn’t get the massive relief from the IV hydration like I was hoping. I don’t know, I guess I expected to feel like doing cartwheels or something? My headache did mostly go away, but I’ve had even less energy than usual. I’ve spent the majority of the last five days laying down, carefully sipping on soda water. I really think I could easily sleep for forty-eight straight hours. To top it off, the anti-emetic drugs I’m on have the lovely side-effect of drowsiness. But, as Mike pointed out, when I’m sleeping I’m not barfing! And not barfing is the goal.
In the morning I am going into the lab for some blood tests, and then we are flying up to Northern California to spend Thanksgiving with Mike’s family. Dr. Risky cleared me for the short flight, which is great. The idea of spending six-plus hours in a car when I’m feeling like this does not sound fun. Although, flying doesn’t really sound fun either, but at least it will be over faster. Annie is extremely excited about flying, though, so I’m hopeful that her enthusiasm will be entertaining and distracting. She wants to meet the pilot! She is a crack up.
It’s going to be a busy, tiring few days. Luckily, we’ll be with family, and knowing that Annie will have her cousins to play with will make me feel a lot better about being a blob on the couch. I try to power through the sick every day for her, but with 24-hour access to her cousins I have a feeling Annie won’t care what I am doing. I’m just hoping she’ll occasionally say hi to me.
Fingers crossed for a painless day of travel… and that I don’t have to use the barf bag on the plane.

I think you have forgotten something about being ‘newly’ pregnant. You’ll be as tired as you will be at the end of the pregnancy!
Lots of hard work is going on at the moment and your body knows it. Meanwhile you’re being a mom to a busy toddler. Cut yourself some slack and sleep while you can, you’re working hard on something special there!

I’ve read studies and articles in class about pregnancy nausea. They said that ginger and a lot of proteines can help! My prof also told us, that she used to take ginger (capsules or/and powder). Maybe you could try that.
Jen says:
Have to second the proteins thing. When I was around 4 months I couldn’t get off the couch or even take a deep breath without spending the next ten minutes, well you know. But my boyfriend’s family insisted we go out to eat. Such considerate people they were. I went and I had a (well done) steak, and I felt great. I was able to eat nearly the whole thing and never felt sick the whole time.

I hope you have an uneventful flight and holiday! I had the same nausea through both of my pregnancies, although it doesn’t sound like I had it as bad as you. I did have it so bad that I stopped at baby #2!
Jenn says:
Hey Heather,
I’ll be thinking of you and hoping your trip away is good one!!
HAPPY THANKSGIVING MY FRIEND!!!

I also concur about proteins, although they are so hard to eat when nauseous. I found relief from lemonade. Dehydration makes you nauseous so hydration is the key to the cycle. Of course, if you can’t keep anything down….Have you tried oatmeal in small bites? Or oatmeal cookies with peanut butter (just reading that probably made you puke)…….best of luck, when all else fails, pumpkin pie!

Sending good wishes your way for an easy flight and an easy holiday and that you are feeling better and get a chance to rest during the visit with family!

Oh Heather I went through the same ER/IV cycle in early pregnancy and threw up again as soon as I got home, so discouraging not to feel better! We had a delayed honeymoon so I was in the first tri and SO nauseous during our trip to Belize- hot, crappy bathrooms, heavy greasy food, and the world’s tiniest puddle jumper plans and crazy boats. Guess what? I felt my best on the boat and plane trips! I took Dramamine (ok’d by doc) but honestly I think it was something about the movement. I was so scared to fly but somehow it quieted the inner demons and I made it thru multiple domestic and foreign flights without a single barf bag. I hope it’s the same for you and that you feel better soon, hang in there.
shan says:
Heather, I hope your flight is a breeze! Fingers crossed you are able to enjoy your holiday with the family and keep some of the yummy food down too!
Heather says:
Oh, the sickness. Now that my youngest is coming up on two, the memory has dulled — but only a little bit. I can’t tell you how many full DAYS I spent doing nothing but sitting on the couch, rocking ever so slightly back and forth. It was the only thing I could do without barfing! I will say, though, that shortly into that last pregnancy, someone gave me a sample of chocolate whey powder to try. Not the cheap stuff from Walmart (that made me feel worse) — some good stuff from the nutrition store. It really, really helped. I’d make a protein powder shake first thing in the morning and then sip on it all day, pretty much. I still felt a little nauseous, but not so badly that I couldn’t function. Maybe you’ve already given it a try, but if not, maybe it’s worth a shot.
Meg says:
Hope you all have a great Thanksgiving, and sending good thoughts that you feel better much soon, Heather!
Linn says:
You are very brave. I had mild nausea my first trimesters and I was so unhappy, I have lots of respect for women who have to function through severe nausea. Try some of the tricks given here, and hope you are better soon.
Trisha says:
Safe travels and Happy Thanksgiving!!

Wishing you the very best with your travels… and happy Thanksgiving!

Having just flown with some extreme pregnancy nausea, the only thing that helped was sour candies, and keeping sucking on them continuously. They were better when they were of a larger size because pressing them against the roof of my mouth also helped. As they got smaller, they stopped working as well. Just an idea…also, we stole all the barf bags within a 12 seat radius…just looking at one of those things and wondering how I was going to manage to keep it all in that little tiny bag was enough incentive to not have to use it. I’m still not sure how I managed to keep it down the entire flight, but I did. Good luck!!!!

long time lurker here – but can I add flying with a little one advice? Never, ever, ever board the plane early! One person goes on early and settles the luggage etc. One person stays out with the little one and keeps them running around – then tries to be the LAST to board. It can take on hour from early boarding to getting to altitude where the child can move around –hell I tell ya!
Lanie says:
I hope the travel was ok and that you start to feel better soon. I really thought the IV would do the trick too – I am sorry to read that it didn’t. Take care of yourself.

Bless your heart…can you get a B-12 shot for an energy boost? (I know, I know, another shot?!?! But they really help!)
