Annabel is required to have her hair up and out of her face for her dance classes. I’ve been experimenting for months with different styles to see what a) looks pretty, b) is easy, and c) does its job and keeps her hair out of her face for an entire class. I’ve finally settled on this twisted rope style and not only is it really pretty, it’s really easy. I’ve actually done two different tutorials for this, one with still photos and one with video. If you’re a video learner, scroll down to the bottom!
After starting with a ponytail on the top of the head, divide the hair into two equal sections.
Twist each piece of hair to the right (clockwise), all the way down to the ends.
Then, twist the twisted pieces around each other to the left (counterclockwise). When you reach the end, secure with a hair elastic.
Wrap the rope braid counterclockwise around the base of the ponytail. Make sure the braid remains twisted while keeping the wrap tight.
Tuck the end of the braid under the twist.
Secure the hair with your preferred method. I used a larger clear hair elastic, but bobby pins would work just as well.
It looks so pretty and so intricate, like you’re some kind of hair wizard.
You can even dress it up with an accessory (like a stuffed hair clip)!
If you have any questions, let me know! Below is the video tutorial. All Annabel wanted to do was wave to the camera, LOL.
Have fun!

That looks adorable! I do something similar and use the twist pins to secure it. I learned about those from you so THANK YOU! The things are magnificent.
Heather says:
Spin pins actually work GREAT with it!!
Marin D says:
Cute! I wish I had that much hair. And I really wish my girls had enough hair to do that with. My 7 year old has almost no hair – poor thing. I am going to try it with my 5 year old. I might be able to pull it off.
Courtney says:
Whoa this is awesome. I just tried it sitting at my desk and it was really easy!
Glenda says:
Love it! I did a version of this bun to my daughter and also w/ two ponies. It’s so much fun doing a lil girls hair.
Jeanie says:
Very cute!
Rebecca says:
I love that! How simple. I’ve been looking for ways to do my hair and I’m going to wear it like that tomorrow!
Kerry says:
Heather, you look great! Love the blouse and your makeup. Annie is cute, too!
Paula says:
That looks great.
Holly says:
I just did this to my daughter’s hair. Took all of 57 seconds and it’s tied down! She is a Scottish Huggland Dancer which requires her to wear her hair in a bun. I’m not sure this would be “competition approved”, but it will definitely work for days when she’s just got practice to get thru. (Or the days following that dreaded “there’s lice in your child’s classroom” note that I sometimes find in her backpack.)
Sue says:
Just beautiful, Heather, and Annie did a great job sitting still!
Nellie says:
OMG, that is absolutely gorgeous and if I had Annabel’s hair, I’d be knocking on your door right this second!
I have a 6 1/2 year old who doesn’t allow me to do much with her hair but come ballet and tap recital picture day, THIS is what I’m going to try my best to create in the rat’s nest that is her daily hair!
By the way, love your picture instructions – I’m a visual girl so looking at your pictures while reading the instructions, really helped – thank YOU!
Megan says:
That’s so pretty! I also do a sport (figure skating) where my hair needs to look pretty but out of my face, and regular buns tend to look like a rat’s nest after a half hour. I’m going to try this.
Mel J. says:
I love this. I hate my hair down or in my face and I growing it out and looking for new ways to wear it. I would love to see a tutorial on the fishtail braid. I have looked at so many of them and still can’t do it.
Pattie says:
Annie’s hair always looks so fab.
And I think my daughter’s hair is long enough to try this — we do a regular knot all the time. The trick will be dealing with her uber-curly (think Shirley Temple) hair.
Molly says:
So beautiful.
Jordan says:
man, I wish my hair was long enough for this. It’s barely to my shoulders right now, hopefully it’ll get long enough for fun things soon.
I wannnnt/need that bow. It looks adorable, and perfect with this hairstyle. Love the colors.
