A few days ago I posted a picture of myself on twitter with a new hairstyle I saw on Pintrest. I’d made it my mission to figure out to to do it. I was pretty proud of myself when I succeeded.
It’s beautiful and a great summer style that gets your hair off your face. I call it the “loom braid” because a) I have no idea if it actually has a name, and b) it reminded me of playing with a toy loom I had when I was a kid. (It is NOT a waterfall braid, that involves an additional strand of hair.)
if you can’t see the video above, click here.
Any questions, let me know!
Michaela says:
My mom used to do that to my hair as a kid. We always called a cascade braid. Love it!
Rebecca says:
To create this myself, I’m pretty sure I’d have to grow an extra hand of fingers and quadruple my brain power. Is there anything you can’t do?
Jackie says:
I’ve always called it a waterfall braid. Try going all the way around your head like a crown and tucking the ends behind your ear with bobby pin!
Heather says:
I’ll try that! I know the waterfall braid, but that has four strands of hair (at least, as I know it it does).
Jackie says:
Yep, waterfall braid!

Heather says:
A waterfall braid involves four strands, not three!
Miriam says:
can you come to my house and play w/my hair? i’m hopeless..
AmazingGreis says:
Can’t you just move in with me and do my hair every day? I’m lazy and this looks too hard for me!! *sigh*
Maura says:
Looks great! My hair is probably too short to try this now, but when it grows longer….!
One suggestion: Try taking that last bit of hair and lifting up another piece, as if you were going to do another braid, but instead, bobby clip it underneath that piece so it disappears into the rest of you hair. Might look even more finished.
Summer says:
HOLY BALLS. I love it. I have curly hair and was a little worried that fussing with it this much would make it giant. I did it successfully the first time (miracle), and it looked awesome!!
Kristin says:
Love it and can’t wait to try it with my hair.
Sarah M. says:
Ohhh I am so jlz. I used to love doing cool braids with my hair, and I have waist length hair. Problem is, it’s very painfully thin and doesn’t look good with certain braids. Then again, even if I could do this, I have a 6 month old baby who would yank it right back out. Boo. :*(
Shauna says:
First of all, you are adorable!
Thank you SO much for posting these videos! I feel like yours are the only ones I can follow an understand then actually do it on my own hair! I love this and can’t wait to try it out!
@Adelas says:
+1 internets to you dear lady. Now I might actually put my hair up/down – normally I wear my waist length hair in a bun to keep it out of my way (it’s so thin, and always up, so everyone is SHOCKED to discover it’s actually long), but I look stupid with it up, and much better with it down (which is why I keep it long). So, you may have made me actually look cool!
Also, the one who said you look like Amy Adams – yes! So true!
Marianna says:
Oh I have been PRAY. ING. for another hairdo from you. I’m going to blowdry my hair and try this right now. Thank you! x
Heidi says:
Love it! I always learn my best hair tricks from you.
Allison Zapata says:
But I want you to do it for meeeeeeeeee! Seriously. I need hands-on lessons. I get really nervous when I do my hair. Looks so pretty!
xoxo
Krystal says:
I learned to french braid by watching your bang braid video, but this may be a little to complex for me lol. I’m going to attempt it on my daughters hair, hopefully I can do it because it is a beautiful hairstyle! Thanks for the lesson.
Jessi @ Quirky Cookery says:
Love, love, love it. It’s one of those hairdo’s that’s really versatile. It’s simple and casual, but you can tell you put some effort into it. Or it can be dressed up to look really fancy as well.
Kenna says:
I tried it, I’m not as talented as you, I need an extra set of hands… love the look but I am not coordinated enough! I am going to forward this on to a friend, maybe she can do it!
You look great with it!
Heather says:
I tried it and I love it! I have REALLY fine hair so it’s great that there is a style that I can do! My only question is: is there any key to getting bobby pins to stay in fine hair? I had to use metal barrettes to get the braids to stay in place!
Heather says:
I use mini-bobby pins on my daughter, she has fine hair and they stay very well. Try those! This is what I use on her: ConAir Mini Bobby Pins.
Brittany says:
I was just going to post and ask what kind of bobby pins you use. Thanks for this! The ones I have keep falling out, so now I’m going shopping to find these! Thanks! Love the hair videos.
Heather says:
Thank you soo much! When I get my next paycheck I’ll have to get them!
Melanie says:
Oh yeah! I bumped up the mom score when I did this for my daughter for her freshman directory pic. For when she goes ALL of the way across the country to go to college. I swear she was just learning to walk yesterday. Seriously. Yesterday.
amourningmom says:
I just cut off my hair but as soon as it grows back I am going to try this – thank you! (or if my almost 4 year old will sit still long enough for me to try loom braid I might get to try it sooner). Thanks again.
Stacy says:
Love it! Thanks for another awesome tip! Keep the coming!
Skye says:
I am SO bad at braiding my own hair. I’m really bad at doing things backwards while looking in a mirror, plus I lack the coordination to hold multiple strands in the right place. I need to practice, though, because every time I see one of your tutorials I want to go do my hair right away!
Kristin says:
That is super cute! My hair is not long enough to do that too, but I am always looking for ways to braid my 4 yr old’s hair – She loves her hair down and I love keeping it out of her eyes, so this looks perfect! Thanks
Penbleth says:
My 16 year old daughter would love this. She often has a braid in the front of her hair and still loves having me do French plaits for her.
Janeen says:
I really wish that i could tell what you were doing cause it looks nice on you. I have similar hair and I would love to rock this……I just can’t tell exactly how to do it.
Aimee Giese | Greeblemonkey says:
Great job!
Mary says:
This is SO easy! After trying the waterfall braid with no luck, this was perfect for me, and I like how it looks so much better. More simple and piecey. I did it while my hair was wet so that it dried with natural waves. Thanks so much Heather! I LOVE these tutorials!
Tara. says:
That is beautiful! I’m going to give that a try.
PS-I got that Land’s End dress, but it just didn’t look good on me. I was so bummed because it’s sooo cute!
Elizabeth says:
I love it!
Courtney says:
I literally put my computer down and just went and did this to my hair…and I have short hair and it still looks good!
Merrill says:
I just wanted to say a) I loved the tutorial. b) Thank you for not being one of those stuck up obnoxious how-to “vloggers” that act like that are gods gife to earth. Seriously, you seem down to earth. I will be subscribing to your YouTube. Thank you!!
Caitlin says:
I have curly hair, and just tried this out after watching the video once, and it came out GREAT! Thanks for the tutorial! I plan on rocking this new hairstyle a lot!
Adrienne says:
Hi….
I am just having trouble doing a regular french braids….any tips?!
Bitchin' Amy says:
Oh my gosh.. I LOVE this braid. I am going to attempt this at BlogHer. But, uh, no promises. I’m not sure if I got the twist part down or not.
Heather says:
Find me at BlogHer and I’ll help you with it!
Samantha says:
I’ve been looking everywhere for a how-to on that braid, thank you so much! I once saw it on a TV-show and immediately tried it myself but I couldn’t figure it out. The girl on the TV-show had few of these braids underneath each other, which looked really cool as well.
Jessica says:
thank you so much. i’ve been searching online for some different way to do my hair for my birthday today for a couple of hours and i finally stumbled across this. I attempted the waterfall braid and i just couldn’t do it. this is so much easier and looks so nice, thank you
LaDonna says:
I sent my daughter a link for this hair do and she is going to have me do this for her wedding She just loves it. Thank you Heather for sharing these with us.
dari says:
I’m soo lost!! I don’t know how to add the hair… like after your done twisting the first part… Im lost after that.
