The Loom Braid

by Heather on June 4, 2011

in Hair

A few days ago I posted a picture of myself on twitter with a new hairstyle I saw on Pintrest. I’d made it my mission to figure out to to do it. I was pretty proud of myself when I succeeded.

It’s beautiful and a great summer style that gets your hair off your face. I call it the “loom braid” because a) I have no idea if it actually has a name, and b) it reminded me of playing with a toy loom I had when I was a kid. (It is NOT a waterfall braid, that involves an additional strand of hair.)

My mom used to do that to my hair as a kid. We always called a cascade braid. Love it!

To create this myself, I’m pretty sure I’d have to grow an extra hand of fingers and quadruple my brain power. Is there anything you can’t do?

I’ve always called it a waterfall braid. Try going all the way around your head like a crown and tucking the ends behind your ear with bobby pin!

I’ll try that! I know the waterfall braid, but that has four strands of hair (at least, as I know it it does).

A waterfall braid involves four strands, not three!

Can’t you just move in with me and do my hair every day? I’m lazy and this looks too hard for me!! *sigh*

Looks great! My hair is probably too short to try this now, but when it grows longer….!

One suggestion: Try taking that last bit of hair and lifting up another piece, as if you were going to do another braid, but instead, bobby clip it underneath that piece so it disappears into the rest of you hair. Might look even more finished.

HOLY BALLS. I love it. I have curly hair and was a little worried that fussing with it this much would make it giant. I did it successfully the first time (miracle), and it looked awesome!!

Ohhh I am so jlz. I used to love doing cool braids with my hair, and I have waist length hair. Problem is, it’s very painfully thin and doesn’t look good with certain braids. Then again, even if I could do this, I have a 6 month old baby who would yank it right back out. Boo. :*(

First of all, you are adorable!
Thank you SO much for posting these videos! I feel like yours are the only ones I can follow an understand then actually do it on my own hair! I love this and can’t wait to try it out!

+1 internets to you dear lady. Now I might actually put my hair up/down – normally I wear my waist length hair in a bun to keep it out of my way (it’s so thin, and always up, so everyone is SHOCKED to discover it’s actually long), but I look stupid with it up, and much better with it down (which is why I keep it long). So, you may have made me actually look cool!
Also, the one who said you look like Amy Adams – yes! So true!

I learned to french braid by watching your bang braid video, but this may be a little to complex for me lol. I’m going to attempt it on my daughters hair, hopefully I can do it because it is a beautiful hairstyle! Thanks for the lesson.

Love, love, love it. It’s one of those hairdo’s that’s really versatile. It’s simple and casual, but you can tell you put some effort into it. Or it can be dressed up to look really fancy as well.

I tried it, I’m not as talented as you, I need an extra set of hands… love the look but I am not coordinated enough! I am going to forward this on to a friend, maybe she can do it!
You look great with it!

I tried it and I love it! I have REALLY fine hair so it’s great that there is a style that I can do! My only question is: is there any key to getting bobby pins to stay in fine hair? I had to use metal barrettes to get the braids to stay in place!

I use mini-bobby pins on my daughter, she has fine hair and they stay very well. Try those! This is what I use on her: ConAir Mini Bobby Pins.

I was just going to post and ask what kind of bobby pins you use. Thanks for this! The ones I have keep falling out, so now I’m going shopping to find these! Thanks! Love the hair videos.

Oh yeah! I bumped up the mom score when I did this for my daughter for her freshman directory pic. For when she goes ALL of the way across the country to go to college. I swear she was just learning to walk yesterday. Seriously. Yesterday.

I just cut off my hair but as soon as it grows back I am going to try this – thank you! (or if my almost 4 year old will sit still long enough for me to try loom braid I might get to try it sooner). Thanks again.

I am SO bad at braiding my own hair. I’m really bad at doing things backwards while looking in a mirror, plus I lack the coordination to hold multiple strands in the right place. I need to practice, though, because every time I see one of your tutorials I want to go do my hair right away!

That is super cute! My hair is not long enough to do that too, but I am always looking for ways to braid my 4 yr old’s hair – She loves her hair down and I love keeping it out of her eyes, so this looks perfect! Thanks

My 16 year old daughter would love this. She often has a braid in the front of her hair and still loves having me do French plaits for her.

This is SO easy! After trying the waterfall braid with no luck, this was perfect for me, and I like how it looks so much better. More simple and piecey. I did it while my hair was wet so that it dried with natural waves. Thanks so much Heather! I LOVE these tutorials!

PS-I got that Land’s End dress, but it just didn’t look good on me. I was so bummed because it’s sooo cute! :(

I’ve been looking everywhere for a how-to on that braid, thank you so much! I once saw it on a TV-show and immediately tried it myself but I couldn’t figure it out. The girl on the TV-show had few of these braids underneath each other, which looked really cool as well.
