This tutorial is how to do that cool french braid where the braid is on the OUTSIDE. I grew up calling it a Dutch Braid, some people call it the Inside-Out Braid. I also show you how easy it is on curly hair.
Any questions? Let me know!

I taught myself how to braid, so I was almost 18 when I learned that the “inside out” braid was definitely not normal. Glad to see someone else does it too!
*waves* hey Jackie!
XOXO from GA,

I bet you can’t wait till Annie’s hair gets long so you can braid it and fishbone it and all sorts of cute bows, headbands and piggy tails etc. . .Keep practicing !

I never learned how to French braid (or Dutch braid) because Meghan wouldn’t let me practice on her, so thank you! (and I don’t think you’re supposed to call them “Dutch”).
Heather says:
how did I know YOU would be the one to say that?
Molly says:
For whatever reason, I find it WAY easier to Dutch Braid my own hair than to French braid it… but easier to French braid other people’s hair. So whenever someone asks me to do my “cool inside out braids” on her hair, I always kind of fumble with it and like try to turn my hands upside down and create weird, sticky-uppy bear’s ear sections.
Like you, I love doing different braids/ twists. I’m a super speedy braider, so it’s quicker to do two dutch braids meeting in the back into a single braid bun than it is to brush my hair into a ponytail that doesn’t have bumps in it – now THAT’S a challenge

Can you come to my house (Chatsworth) or I’ll come to yours and you can show me this about 20 times before I can do it?
ARGH!

CUTE! I’ve never been able to french braid but that made it look super easy! I may have to wake Katie up early in the morning and try it out on her before she goes to school.
She’ll be THRILLED…lol /sarcasm.

Thank you SO much for including curly hair in your videos!! Now I just need to find someone to brain my super thick curly hair!! Could you please ask your friend what product(s) she uses in her curly hair? So far nothing i’ve found really tames the curl, I end up with a *poof* of curl once it dries!!
Sarah says:
I was thinking the same thing while watching the video – if there’s a way you could ask your friend Vanessa, or have her chime in on here, I’d love to know what product(s) and technique she uses.
As most have, I’ve gone through so many trial and error products in the past. I’m currently growing it back out because I finally realized (took me years to come to my senses) that my crazy curls don’t work when they’re short. But I still haven’t found the miracle product that tames and defrizzes the curls but keeps them soft and non-crunchy! I can’t wait till it gets as long as hers in the video – Vanessa’s is lovely!

Am I the only one that has a braiding disability? I’ve tried this so many times and I just really suck. I’ve always wanted to do a french braid but I can’t figure out how to pull the hair in from the sides. Which way do I go once I pull it in?
I’m a loser.
Ashley says:
Thank you so much! I have always wondered how to manage this braid and couldn’t believe it was so simple. I did my hair like that this morning (although I must admit it took me 15 minutes to figure out how to make my fingers work the opposite way and then my arms kept falling asleep). But it turned out so well that I also did my three year old’s hair that way and it turned out adorable!
Thanks again

I can do both the french and dutch braid but can only do the dutch braid on myself. I am loving all of your hair tutorials!
Elise says:
I love your hair tutorials, even though I’m kinda like AJ with the “braiding disability” thing. I can do a basic braid no problem, anything more advanced is a big challenge for me to do on my own layered, wavy hair. My layers seem to make braiding harder, cause pieces keep escaping the braid. Plus, I’m kind of confused about how/when to pull from the sides (I did hear you say on the third braid, pull from the side, but do you pull every time after that, every other time, etc. Gah! Help!) But with practice (and your videos) I’m improving, so that’s something.

I have always liked this plait (as we call it here in Australia usually), because I always feel like when you do a normal braid, it feels all loose at the bottom at the nape of the neck. But doing it this way you can kind of make it tight underneath (just like it would be with a pony tail) if you know what I mean.
Joy says:
have you seen my daughter’s hair? Please I need help, it is crazy long. these are helping but I am still braid challenged. I am gonna try some of these and maybe I can perfect them before we head to Disney.

It seems like ti would be hard to do this with curly hair like hers, but I really like it. It is very similar to a french braid though…just inside out.
