This is my funky twist on a casual side braid. Instead of a regular three-strand braid, I show you how to do a two-strand fish tail plait.
Want a hair tutorial? Just let me know!

~j. says:
Nice! Thanks for showing that! I love the look of it.
Toni says:
Hmmm… Sound not working?? Must learn this braid!!
Jen L. says:
I love Annie sacked out in the background! VERY cute braid! I”m going to try it. My toddler likes to eat my hair, so perhaps this will discourage that. Yeah.
E says:
Hey, can you do that braid thingy that looks like a headband? Lauren conrad always has it, but i can never get it right!
InDueTime says:
Very cute! I start college next week and I’ll have to try that one day with my long hair that I always pull back. lol
Mark says:
Love the whole “get s*** done while the baby’s asleep” look of the vid that Annie asleep on the sofa affords the vid. *s*
If I ever grow my hair out again, I will try this one, though I might have DW do it straight down my back, instead of to the side.
Cecily says:
Dude. I don’t get it.
LOL.
You should see me try to french braid Tori’s hair. Sigh.
Inna says:
How cool is Annie?! – sleeping as if nothing is going on around! love the braid!
Gabriella says:
Will this work as a bang braid as well? I have short hair so I cant do it this way, but I might try it out as the bang braid!
feefifoto says:
Sorry — this won’t work for me for two reasons:
1. I have very short hair.
2. I was too distracted by the gorgeous sleeping baby in the background to pay attention to how it’s done.
Janeen says:
Very cute video. Once my hair grows out i will try this for sure!
Ashley Hast says:
You. Are. *Awesome*. <<>> This is my *fav* type of braid. I can only do it a few more weeks though, and then it’s time for St.Baldricks, and I’ll be taking it *all* off…my hair, that is, for childhood cancer research. I got started in that whole bid’ness (from supporting Allie, to the LLS walks, to Make A Wish, to St. Baldrick’s) *all* because of Allie Scott. Not sure if you know her/ or her mother, but have a gig called Heroes for Children now. Anywho…that’s what *eventually* led me to you and Miss Maddie Moo!!!
Sara@TomTheGirl says:
holy hell you have a lot of hair! mine is so fine, it’s like MAYBE one half of half of a braid. so a quarter. ha.
thx for the tutorial tho! maybe the fluffing will create the illusion of fullness =D
Laurie says:
I love your hair tutorials!! I will be sporting this tomorrow!!
Tara. says:
Thanks Heather! This is a good trick to know for my hair and my daughters!
Erin says:
Haha. I just love that Annie is zonked out right behind you while you show us how to do hair. So cute.
Cathy says:
Love it! Too bad I chopped my hair two months ago.
Tina says:
Love this look, but honestly, I couldn’t keep my eyes off the sleeping cutie in the background!
KayleyM says:
Love it! Love the sleeping Annabel in the background, she’s so cute!
Elle says:
Thanks for this! It will be especially useful when I don’t have time to wash my hair because of a certain little person that wants my undivided attention.
Lori says:
I really enjoy your hair stylin’ videos! Awesome!
Susan says:
Any idea when we will see the ezpz bang twist you twitpic-ed in July? I am dying to find out how to do that! Thanks xo
susie says:
Ok, so not only do I love all the updates on what is going on with your family, I get hair tips too??!?!?!?! AWESOME. I tried out the tie the ponytail twist for an afternoon wedding yesterday and I got a few compliments. Will definitely be trying this braid next. Thanks Heather!
Shauna says:
How did you expect us to pay attention with the adorable little Annie in the background? Seriously though, thank you got posting this! I HAVE to wear my hair off my face and neck (I have think, wavy, curly hair that gets frizzy when I sweat!) and I straighten my hair every day so I’m constantly looking for cute ideas other than my usual headband/pony tail combo that keeps the hair out of my face.
aubrie says:
You took a picture once of a cute little side bang twist thing (not the braid). Will you do a video for that?
rkmama says:
I’m always looking for ways to put my hippie hair up and the bird’s nest bun I’ve been sporting is starting to attract actual birds so thanks, I will be trying this!
(And I also second the lauren conrad heidi-esque headband braid- I keep trying it but alas, I suck.)
cjrymommy says:
What a great tutorial Heather! I can’t wait until my hair is long enough to try it. Your hair is beautiful! Can I ask what shampoo/conditioner you use? I used to be a Biolage girl but lately it dries my hair out and I can’t find anything I like!
BTW, Annie is so adorable I had a hard time concentrating on you
Jocelyn in the STL
Sarah Macon says:
So cute!! Love annabel in the background!
mm says:
Nice idea, thanks! Hair isn’t quite long enough to do to the side, but should work just fine in the back.
Angela says:
you have such beautiful, thick hair! can you do a tutorial on how to braid your bangs onto your head – almost like a hair headband? i believe Lauren Conrad made the look popular. it’s so pretty and i wanna try it but it’s a total fail every time i try ’cause i don’t know where to start!
Angie [A Whole Lot of Nothing] says:
These are the times I wish I had straight hair.
Lisa says:
You’re so cool! I wish I had your hair, it’s very pretty and thick.
Jennifer says:
First off, even though you tried to relegate Annie to the background, it didn’t really work. She’s way too much of a star to be in the background. But that’s ok – I just tuned you out and watched her. (kidding – ok.. not totally).
If my hair was long enough, I’d totally do that. It looks awesome – thank you for showing us that. Next time I do my niece’s hair, I’ll have to try that.
Diane says:
Awesome!
I have just done my hair like it too – very cute.
Can’t wait to see others that you come up with.
rachel says:
Thank you for your cute hair tips. Keep em coming!
Carrie says:
Do you think you could do a tutorial on how to flat iron? I still can’t seem to get it right…
MelissaG says:
Okay..so now I want to see the braid twist thing that the above people are mentioning. Thanks for the vid….cute idea! I have totally done your other two. The bang braid was great the first few times I did it, not not working. I need to watch the vid again. The twisted up-do thing….awesome! I’ve done it a few times and it really does turn out great.
My tip for the people asking about flat-ironing….(if Heather doesn’t mind the link) I use this http://www.aquage.com/Products/Thermalizing/BeyondShine.aspx and it it THE best I’ve ever used (I used to do hair at a salon in my “former life”…aka, before children). It is not sticky, at all, not even a little. And that is the key I think. I spray it on each section before I flat iron with a simple iron that gets pretty good and hot, like this (my fav) http://www.hottools.com/product_detail.cfm?product=1190
I know this doesn’t tell you how to do it and hopefully Heather will show it for those of you that want to see it…it’s just that this stuff works great!
MelissaG says:
OMG…sorry for the double words and crazy talk…must go to bed now!
Dee Dee says:
Hmmm….I am a little confused. I check your blog everyday *even on weekend in case we get an extra* and I am not sure where your hair tutorials came in???? Is this something new you are trying or did you decide we needed some extra entertainment? as if lil Annie & Maddie arent enough:) Thanks though, I will take all the hair pointers I can get!
Heather says:
I do hair tutorials for other websites, so I thought it might be fun to share them here, too!
Dee Dee says:
Gotcha! Thanks for the reply! You better be careful with all this high tech stuff you are puttin out there, you’re going to end up with your own reality show…
Marianna says:
Oh, love the tutorial. Thank you! I am a short hair person who has somehow managed to grow long hair and I just do NOT know what to do with it, so any and all tips are welcome. Also, in the least creepy way possible, man do I want to eat your baby.
shihui says:
hi! I am a reader from singapore!(:
love ur hair tutorial and SUPER LOVE annie in the background!!(: SO CUTE!!
Wendysue says:
Fun! I was somehow hoping you would do this in that cute little Annabell video voice!!
~a says:
I love fish tail braids! I have never done it to the side though – will have to try immediately.
roshan says:
Annie in the background wakes up momentarily and mutters something like *damn, mom is broadcasting again* and goes back to sleep.
Meg says:
I love it! I have hair just like yours so I will try this! Thanks!
Rachel says:
Is there anything you can do for super short hair? I am trying to grow mine back out (longer in front, short in back). I would like something to do with the front of it at least, the humidity and heat here are killing me…I can blow dry it and straighten it and if I spend ANY time outside, it is crazy looking.
AJ says:
French braids! I can never figure out how to do them and I’d love to be able to.
Olivia Singleton says:
Oh my! I can actually do this one! I’m officially hair handicapped, but I can handle the fish braid. The bang braid? Not so much. And it makes me sad.
britni says:
Hi I just wanted to thank you for this! I have wanted to do a fishtail braid for a long time and just never thought to look it up on Youtube, and now here you are! Thanks again
Sirena says:
Heather, I never knew you had this rad hidden skill! The braids are really beautiful. That said, I’ve been trying to do this one and keep replaying the video and am too uncoordinated to make it happen. Mine doesn’t look like a fishtail, it looks like an all night bender lol. I’ll keep trying!!!
Ragan Massey says:
Did this to my daughter Ella’s hair this morning before school. It looked awesome and she loved “looking like a fish”. Keep them coming! With 3 girls I need all the help I can get!
Sarah says:
OMG…your hair tutorials are the best thing EVER! I am completely incompetant when it comes to fun and trendy styles (my thick, more curly than wavy but not really curly, frizz prone hair coupled with my lack of desire and initiative to blow dry and straighen my hair more than twice a year makes it even more difficult). I LOVE LOVE LOVE all three styles you’ve shown and you are totally right–they are all super easy and super cute. I’d love a tutorial on the super casual side chignon. I get the point but can’t seem to figure out how to get all of my long layers to keep from sticking out in a spazzy way. Any thoughts?
Quick side note: I’m a random person who’s been reading you blog for about two years and I think that you, your hubby, and your precious girls are totally awesome. Yours is one of the blogs I look forward to reading everyday–even though we’ve never met. Keep on doing what you do, girl….you are inspiring.
Mandy says:
Flipping AWESOME! I have been wanting to know how to do this for ages. Thank you!
Also, you are amazing at keeping a running commentary. Never felt fake or forced. Great video
Rosa says:
yay! cool thanks for sharing. annabel looks so cute passed out haha
Mama Mac says:
I saw this video when you first posted it, but just tried it for the first time today. All I can say is “thank you, thank you, thank you!” So fast and easy and cute! I’ve been so frustrated with my long hair lately. I love it, but I was stuck in a hot roller rut. Now I feel insipred. You saved me twenty minutes of time and a ton of stress this morning. I owe you, big time! Thanks, Heather.
brittany says:
i tried doing that and i just cant do it on my own hair…it just didnt work it was way to loose.. any advice?
brittany says:
and does amyone know what the heck an elephant braid is??
Heather says:
I’ve never heard of it – but I will investigate!
Ashley says:
OMG!!! Thanks soooooooo much i was dying to know how to do this braid and it’s super easy!!!!
