So, I’m kind of a hair savant.
I have a nervous/bored habit where I fiddle with my hair. The bonus to this is I figure out all sorts of fun styles. And you, dear friends, get to benefit.
Today, I am going to show you how to put a bang braid in your own hair. It’s the perfect casual summer style for those hot sticky days when you want to get your hair off your face.
It’s OK to ooh and ahh.
Any requests for my next hair video? Leave ’em below!
Lisa Marie says:
YEAY! Thank you so much for posting this video. I am left handed and quite spazzy when it comes to doing my hair. I have been dying to wear my hair like this but every time I do it, it looks ridonkulous. Now I see you’re only pulling hair into it from the front and that makes a world of difference! I realize that I am probably a little too excited about this- but I am EXTREMELY grateful! Got any ideas on straighteners and hair product to use when straightening?
Heather Spohr says:
yeah! And I use a straightener so I am well-versed on this topic. I will do that one for sure!
MommaKiss says:
Big fan of the bang braid! Makes it look like I spent time on the herr. Can you do that ‘messy looking’ long side braid? the one w/ all the hair like falling out but still looking good? [what a freakin description…maybe i can find a picture]
Heather Spohr says:
I know what you mean! I do this one a lot, and I have a fun and easy twist to it. ADDED TO THE LIST!
amanda says:
Love this!
OHmommy says:
Sweeeeeeeeeet Heather. Many thanks. I’ve been wearing an obnoxious headband to keep my bangs away from my face when working out. Will try this today.
Heather Spohr says:
let me know how it turns out!
Mishelle Lane says:
Ohhhhh Ahhhhh…
I’m so doing this today when I get home from the pool.. Or wait!??! Maybe before I GO to the pool so everyone can be super JEEEEELOOOOSE of my cool cazh braid! (I almost typed brain. Whoops!)
Heather Spohr says:
didja do it? didja do it?
Kyooty says:
Excellent!!! FTW!!!:)
eva says:
finally a way to do my bangs soon to be 6 month old daughter can’t pull at them love the video
Heather Spohr says:
that is EXACTLY why I started doing this again!!
Amy says:
Yayyy, this is my favorite hair style of all time ! Did you know that if you open the bobby pin and put it over the braid and push it back under the braid, like the opposite way you would think you should, it holds it super tight and you cant see it at all!! (does that make any sense?!)
Also, did you laugh at all when you said ‘bang braid’ ??? I did. Whatever. I am a 12 year old.
Heather Spohr says:
I ALWAYS laugh when I say bang. HEE.
Kate says:
yer cute.
I’m gonna try it! I have really curly frizzy wild hair in this HEAT though…I wonder if I should straighten it first to tame the beast? Hmmm.
Brittany Gibbons says:
Nope, I have frizzy curly hair, and it works perfectly!
Nicole Reeves says:
Super neat!! It’s looks so do-able when you SEE someone do it!! Thanks for taking the time. Can’t wait for the next one. Howz about that funky, french braid that looks like it’s inside out cuz it’s sitting on TOP of your head instead of buried underneath? I’m sure there’s a name for it…
Heather Spohr says:
OH YES! I know how to do that. I always called it a dutch braid, but I have NO idea if that is actually what it’s called. I’ll add that one to my list!
Jess Diettrich says:
It IS called a dutch braid!
Jen says:
So I’m definitely NOT a hair expert – and I hope this doesn’t seem like I’m trying to get all up in yo’ hair-advice biz-nass … but has anyone tried the new Spin Pins!? They.are.amazing…and they even work for my obnoxiously thick, curly hair. It literally took me all of two minutes to do my hair for the last wedding I went to!
Heather Spohr says:
WHERE DID YOU FIND IT?! I have been looking for them EVERYWHERE. I want one bad.
Jess Diettrich says:
Heather, have you tried Target or Walgreens? I don’t know if they have Walgreens down in LA, but if they do, search for the item on walgreens.com and there will be an option to check inventory in nearby stores to see if they have them. I have only seen them at Target and Walgreens!
And if you still aren’t having any luck, message me and I’ll send you my two brunette ones that don’t work in my hair because it’s too short!
Jen says:
Yep – found mine on a random should-have-been-at-work shopping trip to Walgreens. Must have been early on though, b/c my sister can’t find one for the life of her.
Good luck!!
Brittany Gibbons says:
I found them in Walmart…sooo….I guess you’re screwed Heather.
AmazingGreis says:
Love the look, but you totally lost me at pulling hair in from the front. LOL, that seems kind of technical for me. I’m HORRIBLE with hair.
Heather Spohr says:
I will give you an in-person lesson next time I see you!
Sarah says:
Got any tips for girls like me with super-fine hair? I’ve always wanted to do this but everytime I try it ends up as one great big FAIL lol.
Heather Spohr says:
I would suggest putting some hairspray in your hair and then brushing it. Gives your hair a bit of texture, and it should make it easier for your hair to hold the braid. OR you can try it when your hair is still wet. If either of those don’t work, let me know!
Sarah says:
Thanks for the tip, the hairspray thing worked great! I never would’ve thought of that =)
Angie Pangie says:
i want you to play w/ my hairs.
Miss says:
I’m totally trying this. I won’t do it right, but damn if I’m not going to try.
Pademelon says:
Your tutorials are freakin’ fantastic! Thanks for posting them. I’m hopeless with hair but I’m trying to learn. Could you do french braiding? I’ve always wanted to learn but can’t seem to figure it out. Or something that would work with my stupid fine yet abundantly thick, curly at the top of my head yet almost straight at the bottom of my just past should length hair? Tall order, right? I need a personal hair guru or something. You can ignore that last bit. French braiding would be good.
magpie says:
I’m such a hair spazz. I wonder if I could figure this out…
Laurie says:
You? Are my new personal hero. I did the fancy knot twist and it worked perfectly the first time, AND your tip about not pulling in hair from the back into the side braid finally made my attempts to do that style successful. Yay!
neeroc says:
So it’s apparent that I have zero french braiding skills and only minimal braiding skills at all. You lost me on the ‘pull from the front’ bit. It looks like you are adding hair to the bundles you are braiding, but how? Are you only adding it to the same one each time (every 3rd wrap), or do you add it to each, or is it random? How do you not end up with one big blob of hair?
MommyGeek says:
A french braid is a regular braid, but with every wrap you add hair as it progresses down the length of hair. In this video Heather is only adding hair when she wraps from the right side (in the video) — or, the “front” part of the braid, where “front” means closer to her face.
So it’s basically every wrap on one side – or, every other wrap if you’re thinking about both sides.
Brigid says:
My 6YO totally thanks you for this (though she doesn’t even know it yet) because she lets me do horrible things to her hair. We have been doing the bang braid a lot and it looks crazier every time I do it.
Any other cute kid styles?
Ali Martell says:
Emily wanted me to let you know that she has been rocking bang braid since Lauren Conrad made them famous. She loves that you did this post, only now she’s a wee bit worried that everyone is going to be doing it. hahahah
Cass says:
I have to give you one big THANK YOU for this post. I’ve been braiding a single braid with my bangs for a while to deal with them but I didn’t think of only pulling from one side for the french braid. I have to say though, every time I do this I get so many compliments!
Priya says:
Ohhhhhh Ahhhh that’s great! I have tried to do this hairstyle many times and I always mess it up. Your tip about only pulling from the front is key. Thanks! Oh and the new blog design is neat, great job!
April says:
Love this video! Thank you!
How about the ponytail thing that is popular right now? Like its all up (kind of?) and messy-ish?
memphislis says:
YES! Thanks! This is what I’m doing today. It’s 120 for the heat index here in Memphis, so you know. Easy hair is the. Only. Way.
Christine says:
I have been trying to do the bang twist since I saw it on your twitter.
It would appear to be easier than the braid, yet I am failing miserably at it…maybe because your hair is thicker than mine…?
Christine says:
^Just updating from my last comment ^
pulling the hair from the FRONT ONLY makes it a hella lot easier.
Thanks!!!
Krissa says:
Pretty rings! … I wish I had your hair. I have very thin hair thanks to stress and a hyperthyroid. I’ve done things with braids before, but not this and it looks cute! Can’t wait to try it!
Randi says:
Very nice! I love this casual hairstyle. Would you be a sweetheart and show me how to do a few things that I still can’t figure out? I have long(ish) hair, a slight bit longer than yours, and there are two simple things that I CAN’T DO and it’s driving me nuts! I can’t make a bun that looks halfway decent, and I can’t figure out how to wrap the hair around the ponytail holder! GAH! Help!
Erin Welch says:
Hey Heather! Love the bang braid! I do a ‘bang twist’ similar to the braid…I start at the top, like you do and twist…and add hair from the front all the way down to about the top of my ear. This is PERFECT for when I pull my hair up in a ponytail and it all won’t fit into the band! You should show the twist, too! Super easy…less than a minute to do! Just secure with bobby pins!
Heather says:
That’s actually the next video I’m going to do! I LOVE the twist!
Laurie says:
How did I just discover this? I am now proudly sporting the Easy Peasy Bang Braid, and I have ALWAYS wondered how to make this awesome little creation. Thanks!
Morgan says:
Yay! I have been doing a really awful impersonation at the bang braid. SO glad to know how to do it properly now. I have zero hair skills. You might like my post titled, “Hell Has Frozen Over” in which I chronicle the day I dropped my daughter off at school with a scrunchie on top of my head. I put it up the night before and totally forgot about it. Yikes! Thanks for this great post!
Dawn says:
More hair videos please! I have short hair, but my 2 little girls have long hair and I love these quick easy hair dos that even I (the hair disabled) can do.
Kate says:
This is the most amazing thing ever.
I didn’t really believe in it at first, but it’s been a heat index of 110 here in Topeka for the last two weeks, and I finally had to go out and couldn’t deal with what my bangs (which are pretty short) kept doing. I don’t know how to french braid, so I just did a regular one, but OMG, it worked SO well. I got to leave the house, not feel disgusting as my bangs plastered themselves to my forehead, and pretend I looked cute. You are pretty much my hero right now.
(I am totally demanding a french braid tutorial. I can’t be the only twenty-something who never learned….)
Abby says:
Why did it take me until now to find all the hair videos on your site?! I love ’em! My mom had no experience making pretty girl hair do’s, so I appreciate the guided videos.
strobella says:
I saw this video this morning and I am currently wearing the bang braid. I have this wonky ‘in between’ hair cut where most of my bangs will go in the ponytail but there’s this little chunk that always falls out and just dangles in front of my eyes. After using bobby pins for a while, the ‘easy peasy bang braid’ is the solution I have been looking for. Plus with my foil highlights, it looks super cool and streaky. I’d post a photo, but that might be overkill.
Thanks for the great hair tips. Keep ’em comin’!!
KellyInSeattle says:
I did this to my bangs today! SO cute! I couldn’t have done it without you …
Joy says:
seriously can you come to TN and give me a personal lesson on all the great cute braids?
My daughter has super long hair and plays baseball, I can do a regular french braid or just a regular braid but I want some cute new styles I was watching some girls softball last night and their hair dos were so cute!
I am gonna try this one tomorrow though love it, her hair is always in her face I need something quick and easy for every day i think I could pull this one off!
katie says:
“go forth and braid”
Love it
MamaCas says:
Hmmm….I’ll need to try this for my girls! I’m trying to grow out their bangs but they’re always. in. their. faces! This sounds like a good idea!
Heather says:
HOW am I just now finding these? I have a bang braid in my hair right now, and seriously, I’m so stupid about my hair I still have other people do it when I need it to look nice.
More please!
Stephanie says:
Heather, can you show us how to fishtail braid or maybe a blow out?
Katie says:
Heather! I totally did this yesterday and OMG… I have NEVER gotten so many compliments on my hair before! So thank you thank you thank you for your amazing tutorials!!!
hat says:
urgh how did i not see this before!
this is exactly what i have been trying to do for months but couldn’t master, now i’m sorted! At first I was WTF is a bang?! In England its a fringe thankyou heather!!
MaNiC MoMMy says:
That was cute. I’m gonna do my daughter’s hair today like that. She’s 11. Also watched Annie’s workout video. So cute. You look happy and well. I’m so glad for you! : )
Annie says:
I did my daughter’s hair like this this morning and she was thrilled!!!
Thanks for the idea
Annie
Jenny says:
My 5 year old daughter just started soccer and kindergarten. She wants to grow her bangs out. My husband REALLY doesn’t like this idea, especially because having clips on top of her head doesn’t work with soccer. Thanks to your bang braid, he hasn’t been complaining at all about her long bangs and messy clips falling out. If you look at my blog, you’ll see your good advice paying off on my cuties hair. Pulling from the front makes it much easier for quick before school, during breakfast madness. Her bangs are still nose length and I’m proud of my proficient finger skills. Practice makes…uh…better…
THANK YOU! I’ve tried the twist – and it’s a no go, but I see on this comment board that you’ve posted about it on twitter or here, so I’m going to see if I can get some tips.
Kristin says:
I’ve been doing a bang braid on my 9 year old for years, but it never quite came out perfectly. I cannot WAIT to try this on her! Thank you for the awesome styling tips Heather!!!
Brittani says:
This braid is SO not easy! Not for hair-challenged people like myself. But I’ve been practicing and after the 800th try I finally got it right. Thank you! please post more tutorials. You make it easier to follow than the other tutorials that I’ve seen.
