I’ve been looking for a cute party favor to give out at Annie’s Back To School party, and I thought a crayon/pencil roll would be cute and functional. They’re great for school or for throwing in your purse to pull out at restaurants. You only need basic sewing skills (hand or machine) and the rolls are easy enough that you can whip out a few in just one nap time!
Fabric of your choice
Matching felt
Matching Ribbon
Fabric scissors
Ruler
Fabric Pen
Pins/Needle/Thread
Crayons/Pencils
Start by cutting your fabric. If you’re making a crayon roll, cut it 12-inches wide and 11-inches tall. For a pencil roll, cut 12-inches wide and 16-inches tall.
Fold each side in half an inch, pin in place.
Fold the top of the fabric down five inches, leaving an inch uncovered at the bottom. Pin in place.
Fold the bottom inch up, pin in place.
Cut a strip of felt 3-inches tall by 11-inches wide.
Place the felt on the folded material, lining up the side and bottom edges. Pin in place, then sew around the edges of the entire thing.
Mark lines every inch or so on your felt.
Sew down the lines, creating pockets for your crayons or pencils.
Cut a piece of ribbon 21-inches long.
Pin it to the outside of your roll, then sew in place.
Put your crayons or pencils in the pockets. Go ahead and arrange them according to Roy G Biv, it’s okay.
You’re done!
I made one for Annie and filled it with colored pencils.
Annie doesn’t need either roll at school yet, but I keep them in my purse because you never know when you might have a coloring emergency on your hands.
You’d be surprised how often we come across coloring emergencies.
Any questions, let me know. Have fun!
Jordan says:
She is such a doll.
I was just talking to my Mom on how I need something for my purse to hold my pencils and pens. This would be perfect! Thanks, Heather!
Emily says:
I am 30 years old and often have coloring emergencies. I just went to the art student supply store and bought 2 peach colored pencils so that I can keep coloring.
Jolene says:
Adorable! I would LOVE this. Yet, I’d rather buy one. Etsy to the rescue?
Molly says:
You should open an etsy shop!
Linnae says:
I agree!
Kate says:
I was just thinking: as a writer, I need one for all my pen. But I don’t sew. Clearly, you should take commissions.
RzDrms says:
You matched her shirt to the rolls! I can hardly find matching socks.
Heather says:
Oh, you know that was 100% Annie!!
Leslie says:
Awesome. I want to make one for each boy so there’s no arguing at restaurants
Kristen says:
Can you show a picture of it rolled up? I’ having a hard time visualizing what the ribbon does (other than make it cuter).
Lisa says:
The ribbon is used to tie it shut. So roll then wrap the ribbon and tie a bow. The ribbon is only secured in one spot. Not all along the back. Hope that helps.
Kristen says:
Oh, silly me I just realized the very first picture has two of them rolled up and tied. That makes much more sense now.
Heather says:
I was just coming to tell you that! Does that picture make it clearer?
Lisa says:
I am making this for sure!!! And for once I have all the materials at home. One more ribbon question…is it sewed on the end or the middle of the pack and then left loose the rest of the way?
