I’ve been wanting to make more things for James, because I love him and because Annie is at the point where she thinks every time I’m at my sewing machine I’m making something for her (not okay). I’ve whipped out a dozen bibs for him, but I decided he needed a toy. He loves his tag blanket so I figured he’d like a toy with tags, too. I went back and forth over different shapes before I settled on a cloud, with ribbon tag “rain” hanging down. It’s REALLY simple and you only need a few things to put one together.
Soft white fabric, about 1/2 yard
Washable blue ribbon, variety
Fabric marking pen
Baby ring toys (optional)
Thread, needle, pins
Start by copying your template onto the back of your fabric. You can draw your own, or you can use the cloud template Mike drew for me! Cut out two clouds, then set the pieces aside.
Cut your ribbon into five pieces. If I make another one of these, I will use some wider ribbons. These are all 1/8″ to 5/8″ wide, but an inch would work, too.
Fold your ribbons in half, then sew them shut.
Pin your ribbons in place like the photo above. You want to pin them to the “right side” of your cloud fabric. Have a little bit (about 1/4-1/2 inch) hanging down below the bottom of the cloud.
I also added a ribbon tag to the TOP of the cloud. I didn’t sew it completely shut because I wanted to be able to slip a baby ring through the top so I could attach the cloud to things.
Place your other cloud shape on top of the ribbons, right side in, and pin in place. Then carefully sew around the edges, leaving an inch-wide opening.
Pull your fabric through the hole so everything is right-side out.
Grab your stuffing and get to work! I didn’t do this, but you could stick some cellophane or something crinkly inside so the toy makes that crinkly noise babies love. I might try that next time!
Once your cloud has reached optimal stuffiness, close the hole.
Look how cute your little rain cloud is!
James loves to bang it on stuff.
He’s saying, “You guys, this is the best baby toy, you really gotta make one, I’m tellin’ ya, I love it!”
It’s also very cuddly.
Any questions, let me know. Have fun!
