Big Plans In The Big Apple

by Heather on July 27, 2010

in Friends, Heather

Next week, I am going to New York City for the BlogHer conference. My mom and cousin Leah are also joining me, and of course no trip would be complete without my travel pal Annabel. I’m really excited to go back to my second home, and I’m going to be there for six days! This means I’ll have plenty of time to see my friends, both online and local.

When I lived in New York, I did the touristy things when my friends would come visit. So I’ve been to the Statue of Liberty, Ice Skated in Central Park, and eaten my way through Little Italy. So, this time, I want to make it more interesting.

Since life lists are totally the rage right now AND I’m embracing Thirty-Fun, I’m working on my New York City must-list.

  • make a bootleg DVD of Annabel movies and sell it in SoHo for $5.
  • get my mom on the Today Show’s Ambush Makeover. She needs something awesome like that after everything that’s happened (and she’s celebrating a big birthday this year).
  • speaking of the Today Show, Annabel needs to meet her sister’s favorite guy, Matt Lauer.
  • make Leah eat Tasti D Lite, watch her gag (she hates sugar, you guys. How are we even related?).
  • threaten to take Brittany on the Roosevelt Island Tramway, video tape her peeing her pants in fear.
  • and, speaking of Brittany, launch our awesome new venture in NYC, Mouth Media.
  • eat from food carts and hunt down Mr. Softee, then spend days trying to get the jingle out of my head.
  • kick ass at karaoke (yes, this is on my must-list for every city).
  • convince tourists I am a dancer in a Broadway show.
  • Order soup correctly from the Original Soup Man (aka the Soup Nazi)

It’s obviously still a work in progress.

Who else is going to NYC next week? What is the one thing you want to do there? And if you aren’t going, what one thing can I do for you and document with my cameras?

This totally just turned into Truth or Dare.

I’m going, too! My big goal for the weekend is to use the subway without my husband there. Because, dammit, I can figure that map out by myself, right?

Also want to see a show or two. And not spend the entire conference hiding in the Serenity Suite. :)

I’m not going.

I’ll admit that I don’t know much about this BlogHer event at all. Do you have to be invited? Like, if your blog gets enough “votes” or something? Or can just anyone who has a blog attend. Six days in New York sounds pretty dang cool, though.

I can’t wait to hear all about your trip. Are you speaking at this one?

I like your “to do” list for New York. Will you be waving a sign out in front of the Today Show? Let us know which day you’ll be there, if so. Would love to see that and shout, “Hey! There’s Heather and Annie!!!”

Oh, and I would LOVE to get soup from the “Soup Nazi” :)

If the Amazing Annabel has some extra time on her hands maybe she can go to the Gold’s Gym in Midtown and get my last pay check that they never sent to me. And if you’re in that area, the David Letterman show is pretty much around the corner, you could stop by Rupert’s Deli if it’s still there (I haven’t been back in almost 4 years). … Have a great time!

If a crazy southerner runs up to you for a hug, that’s probably me. It’s best just to go with it. Also? I”d TOTALLY buy a bootleg DVD of Annie movies.

Ahh, try Madame Tussauds if you haven’t done that already. Track down Naked Cowboy and Naked Cowgirl – have them fight over who takes better pictures with you, Annabel, your mom and cousin. :O Go to FAO Schwartz and have someone take a picture of you, Annabel your mom and cousin stomping on the floor “piano”. Go to Crumbs for a Cupcake celebration.

Have a wonderful time in NYC and can’t wait to read all about it. Even though I live in Queens, NY and work for a law firm in Grand Central Station, I am born and raised NJ girl who’s learning every day about the awesomeness of NYC!!

Now, I am not expecting you to be able to accomplish this but it would be oh so funny and awesome. It is not a tourist thing or anything. However, it is totally something I could see you doing. Anyway, background story…when I was 16 my dad had a heart attack. It was a very stressful time for me and my family. So, my mom took me to see the comedian John Mulrooney. This was a HUGE deal for me because I had a huge crush on him. There are some old clips of him on youtube. GORGEOUS!!! Anyway, my mom and I sat in the front row at the comedy club and when he came onstage to perform he started talking to me!!! OMG!!! I lied about my age at the time and said I was 19 to get in the club (it was 18 and over). Well, to make a long story very short…he started making jokes about me being kissed by a real man. I said no (actually I had never been kissed at all). So, I went up onstage and he gave me my FIRST KISS. Yes, in front of my mom, the audience, God, the bartender, EVERYONE!!! I was over the moon.
Last year, I looked him up and found that he had a website. He had since become a born again Christian but was still doing comedy. I e-mailed him to let him to thank him for what he did back when I was 16 (I am 36 now). He said you’re welcome, that he didn’t remember but he made a joke about getting arrested for kissing a 16 year old! He said to let him know whenever I was going to be in New York again.
Well, he just got hired on to a radio show in Poughkeepsie called WPDH. It is called Coop and Mulrooney in the morning. So you could always visit him on the radio show and tell him that the the 36 year old chick in Califoria who he gave a first kiss to 20 years ago says hi!
LOL!

I am an ex New Yorker and am really missing the food as I have now officially been gone for a year…Please eat Tasti d lite every day (maybe even twice) and make sure to hit Wo Hop in Chinatown, the one downstairs not up for some chinese food for me…they are even open 24 hours…

I love NYC!!! So bummed I had to cancel, but I will definitely be keeping up with everyone there through Twitter and the such. Have a blast and can’t wait to see your videos.

Last time I was in NY we searched all over for the Naked Cowboy, we never saw him, but we did find the Naked Cowgirl. I agree, a picture of Annie and the Naked Cowboy would be priceless!!!

Dearest Heather,
My DH and I spend an inordinate amount if time in NYC, and while there, I spend an obscene amount of time at The Shake Shack — the one on Columbus. The burgers are knock-your-socks-off delectable (not that anyone in town is wearing much in the way of socks these days — soooo warm!!), the fries are of the sort that regularly interrupt my otherwise wholesome dreams (yeah, right… Well, nobody can see me here, ergo nobody gonna identify me as a bigfatliar neither — the beauty of the ‘net, especially for someone who hasn’t had a dream that might qualify as “wholesome” since 3rd grade…), and they make these outright sinful concoctions called “concretes” that bring tears to my eyes as I sit here recalling the last one I was privileged to enjoy (a few months ago — and it was blood-orange custard with some sort of pound cake whipped in… Mmmmmm!!)… Egads, I think a rabidly hungry tear just trickled down my left cheek — how embarrassing!

No need to document, no “dare” involved — just a whole-hearted recommendation that y’all stop in one afternoon if you’re able!

I love being privileged to follow your blog, and I generally merely “lurk” and wish you and your darling family well from around virtual corners, but I simply HAD TO put my 2-cents in since you solicited requests…

Have a fabulous time, sweetie!!! :)

Take pictures of yourself frolicking. Like, full out enjoying EVERYTHING. I want to see a picture of frolicking joy everywhere you go :P The more ridiculous it is, the more points I’ll give you.

Yep, I’m handing out points. Beat that.

Come to Brooklyn! Manhattan is for beginners. Come to my neighborhood–Fort Greene/Clinton Hill! We have an awesome flea market on the weekends, we have great restaurants and a lovely park, beautiful brownstones, etc. etc. Here is just one bit of awesomeness: http://www.cafehabana.com/planet.htm

You should follow “the girl who ate everything” blog – she has some great reviews of everything from dives to high end restaurants. It is my dream that I go to NYC and try some of her reviews/follow her steps! :)

You must go eat at Katz’s Deli.

You must seek out your Mr. Softee in Brooklyn, where it is cheaper than in Manhattan.

You must say “hello” to the penguins at the Central Park zoo.

oh, and we stopped by Magnolia Bakery today… mmm, cupcakes.

It’ll be my first time going – hope to see you there! My sister is flying in as well and since she’s never been to NYC, we’ll be dashing off to see the tourist highlights (statue of liberty, etc.!)

Heather!!! I can’t wait to actually meet you!!! I just plan to YELL HEATHER and hug you….and I am sure you will be like “who is this chick and WHY on earth is she hugging me”. LOL

Anyway…. Funny you mention Mr Softee. After living in NYC for years myself, and now not–I long for it. I went there a few weeks ago and literally looked down each street for it. I did find one of those awesome NYC style street fairs!!! I am also a Tasti-D-lite fan! Maybe we will meet via ice cream stop vs. BlogHer :-)

I won’t be going but boy would I love to.

My favorite thing I ever did on a trip to NYC was about 5 years ago, my brother and his roomates at the time lived in NYC and I went to visit. One of his roomies randomly decided he wanted to go find the buildings from the cover of Led Zepplin’s Physical Graffiti (96 and 98 St Marks Place). Wandering around the city with them hunting for that was absolutly the most fun I’ve had in NYC.
