Doesn’t Work With Pumpkins

by Heather on October 26, 2008

in Family, Heather, the famous Madeline, trying not to be wordy

I decided I wasn’t going to let a little thing like no job, no prospects, and an army of paperwork bum me out. Or a migraine, the sudden onset of a massive toothache, or my bad back get me down. Or cleaning out my office, turning in my employee badge, or handing over my keys depress me. No sir. I just put those things in the back of my mind and did what any normal person who’d just been laid off would do – I went to the pumpkin patch.

pumpkins

There is a pumpkin patch near my parents’ house that has some rides, a petting zoo, and of course, loads of pumpkins. I was planning on going on the rides. You know, climb the bouncy slide, go on the trampoline, spin in the teacups. But all the rides have weight limits. SUCK.

maze, bounce house, slide

We thought our little hammy daughter would love to sit with pumpkins and put hay in her mouth. We set her down amongst some pumpkins on a bale of hay and…she wasn’t so sure about it.

So we thought we’d go look at the petting zoo. We didn’t go in it, but Maddie liked looking at the animals. There were two goats that were in a fierce head-butting match. One goat would climb a bale of hay, rear up on its hind legs, and then dive head first into the other goat. The entire time we watched, this clueless little blond girl was a foot away. I kept yelling, “WHERE IS A PARENT?”

fighting goats, stupid child

After we watched the goat on goat on little blond girl death match, we thought we’d try to get Maddie down with the pumpkins again.

It didn’t go over well.

I finally sat down with her and she calmed down, although she was still pretty pissed.

Eight hours later she still has that pissed off expression on her face. This bodes well for pictures with Santa.

Hopefully Santa isn’t all prickly and inanimate. Captain Dumbass has put out a call for pumpkin patch/kids pics. You should totally send him a pissed-off Maddie shot. he’s at http://richmondzoo.blogspot.com!

LOL! Viva forced pictures!
Santa was never a big hit around here, since my little ones don’t like loud male voices or sweaty strangers…

Good for you for putting all that’s happening in your life aside for some pumpkin patch fun. Sometimes its not easy to lay aside grown-up worries… this I know.

i’d pass on the santa pics. really. not sure that making kids sit on a strangers knee is really what we want to teach them anyway. (i know i’m a killjoy but oh well). a photo on your or mike’s knee much cooler anyway!

Let’s see if we can start a theme….Santa, Easter Bunny….maybe we can even find a leprechaun. Then you will have a seasonal blackmail collection when Maddie turns into a teen. :D

Her eyes look so blue in that one pic – I just want to squeeeeze her!

Love that look! When I was about 8 months old they took me to Santa for pics and I screamed bloody murder. Funny thing was, it was my Daddy dressed up! Ooops.

Enjoy your time home with Maddie!

How fun. Sorry to hear about your job. I was pink slipped twice while teaching. It was so hard for me because it wasn’t based on my teaching but budgets and seniority :-( Good luck.

That is officially the cutest angry baby I have ever seen in a pumpkin patch! Next year will be great because the two pictures – one of her furious, and one of her loving it – will be hilarious to put them side by side!

Thanks for sharing!

Poor Maddie. Santa won’t be her favorite either. Like Mary said, next year she’ll be loving it all.

Thinking of you!

just don’t put her in a shirt that says “SAnta” on it when you go for those. maybe that was what pissed her off. hahaha. just kidding. that kid is delicious even when she’s unhappy!

Hey there. Stalked you over from Matt’s blog.

Just wanted to say, even though she is uber pissed! Maddie is still a ball of cuteness!

I read the ‘who is Maddie’ post and I wanted to say I’m so happy you were so strong for her.

Sorry to hear about your job. That sucks. I was in the same boat for a while so I know how you feel. You’re daughter is adorable, despite the get me out of here look on her face. :)

She’s still the cutest thing ever, pissed or not!

I have 5 years of pictures of Santa holding my youngest and she is screaming bloody murder in every one of them, while my oldest sits there smiling nicely next to her! They still crack me up to look at!!!

LOL! I have pictures of my boys with Santa. Baby is screaming bloody murder and arching away and Middle is screaming “WHO THE HELL IS THIS?” He was 4. I rolled with laughter while several parents said “What kind of mother lets her kid swear like that?” I just turned and said “This kind of of mutha!” Heh.

Duuude. Twin and I have CLASSIC pics where we are SCREAMING our heads off on Santa’s lap. And the Easter Bunny. And anything in costume. Yeah, good times for our parents.
Her little glare of death while she is sitting on your lap is ADORABUHLS.

You look GREAT for an unbathed, unemployed slacker! And that hair bow is out of this world. I hate hay, it always sticks me in the butt when I sit on it, I might cry a little too. You should come to FL, let’s drink your sorrows away.

I did not like santa at all when I was a baby. In one of the pictures of my sister and I with santa my mom was in the picture because when I was a baby I did not want to go by santa wituout her. I also cried because of Pluto at Disneyworld when I was a baby.

Our Maddie reacted similarly to the pumpkin patch. She seemed like quite a happy baby, and then we sat her down on the hay and she screamed and screamed. We tried again later with the same results. I, too, thought that she would love sitting on the hay and try to eat it. Must be a Maddie thing!
