Annabel lost a tooth last night, her very first one. It had been loose for about five weeks. She’d go through phases where she’d wiggle it like crazy, then refuse to touch it because it would get sore. I was starting to think the tooth would never come out and then, “disaster” happened: Annabel’s tooth not only came out, but she accidentally swallowed it.
Unsurprisingly, there were a LOT of tears – partially because she was shocked, but mostly because she was afraid that swallowing a tooth would mean a) the tooth fairy would be mad at her, and b) the tooth would “hurt her insides.” We got her calm after we explained the tooth fairy would still come, and then excitement took over.
Annabel asked if she could “write a post about all of my feelings,” so here are Annabel’s own words about losing her tooth:
– – – – –
I didn’t want to lose my tooth because I really love my baby teeth, and I want to keep them forever. But today when I realized it was gone, I was surprised. I was also a little bit sad. I was mad at my mouth!
The moment I realized it was gone was right after I swallowed a bite of my dinner. I was eating a quesadilla, it was so good, it had bacon in it! I probably swallowed my tooth. That was my most favoritest tooth, because it was the sharpest. It’s going to be SO hard to chew now.
I never expected my tooth to come out today. I was a little scared at first because I thought maybe my tooth would make me sick but my daddy told me that it wouldn’t hurt me. I was surprised there is a hole where the tooth was. I think my brother might be afraid to kiss me now that I am missing a tooth! I look pretty scary.
My parents said I could write the tooth fairy a letter about my swallowed tooth. You have to draw a picture of your tooth or you won’t get any money. If you don’t know how to draw a tooth, it’s basically a square with some points on the bottom. Never lie to the tooth fairy in your letter!
I was afraid it would hurt to lose my tooth but I felt nothing! So I’m not afraid anymore. I’m happy! But also sad.
I can’t believe I lost my first tooth!

I can’t believe it, either.
Jen says:
Tell Annie not to worry. My son swallowed three of his baby teeth. We were writing a lot if letters.
Debbie A-H says:
I will never lie to the Tooth Fairy–never!
Damita says:
Bless her little heart! Glad she got her feelings out and told the truth in her letter. I hope the tooth fairy rewarded her really well!
Emily says:
My cousin’s son also swallowed a tooth yesterday!
I remember in elementary school I was jealous of the kids who lost a tooth during class because they got to go to the nurse and get a little case for their tooth and a toy. I did lose one during school in 6th grade and by then the novelty had worn off.
Rie says:
Should I tell Annie, what the going rate for teeth is at Farrah’s house?? Hahahaha!!
Amber in OC says:
I just made a comment about Farrah!! Do you remember how much it was? I would go Google it, but I will get sucked into Teen Mom gossip!! Ha!
Damita says:
I think the first time she gave her $400. Last week’s episode, I think she gave her over $1000 for another tooth she lost.
Heather says:
SO INSANE!!!
Kelli says:
I just can’t believe how fast she’s growing up – and I *know* you can’t! Thanks for sharing her with us.
JustAMom says:
My daughter swallowed one too – but the best was when we were making cupcakes and her tooth fell out as she was talking and into the batter!
Tell Annie we want an update post once the tooth fairy has come!
Cheryl says:
I remember swallowing one of mine when I was eating Cocoa Puffs for breakfast, but the tooth fairy didn’t come, which upset me a great deal. So, when my son tripped and fell and hit the pavement and his loose tooth went flying never to be seen again, I made sure that the tooth fairy came!
Alyssa says:
My daughter lost her very first tooth last year and she swallowed it too!! She was so upset because she thought the tooth fairy wouldn’t come, but I explained to her that she deals with this all the time and to write her a letter telling her what happened. So she did and everything was fine in the end. Now she has lost 3 more teeth with a 5th wiggly one on the way out. I’m still not ready for this growing up teeth loosing business!
Paula says:
My daughter “lost” her 1st tooth at a Daisy Girl Scout meeting (held) in the school gym. They waited for the janitor to swept the floor and everything but it was lost forever.
Lori says:
My son swallowed his tooth in the middle of the night so he woke up and FREAKED OUT! I still had my first tooth in my baby book, so I got my tooth, looked under his bed and said, “Oh here’s your tooth. It must have fallen out of your mouth on to the floor.” He’s now 13 and still doesn’t know the truth!
THE Tooth Fairy says:
Hi Annabel! This is THE Tooth Fairy here. I got your lovely letter late last night. Thank you sooooooooo much! What a wonderful and creative drawing! Please don’t be worried at all about swallowing your tooth; it’s totally okay. See, it’s very tiny (that’s one reason why they’re called “Baby Teeth!”), and lots and lots of little kids swallow their teeth. Luckily, your big strong body can handle it. And I am definitely not upset that you swallowed it, because that meant that I got your awesome drawing and note instead! Yay me! Congratulations on this milestone (that means Big Event!) in your life. Hopefully you have a BUNCH MORE!
Lots of love,
THE Tooth Fairy
P.S. I hope you got to show all of your friends and teachers in school today! Yay!
Damita says:
Wow, what a lucky girl you are Annabel!! This is awesome!
Kristina says:
I am literally the least sentimental mom on the planet, but for some reason when my oldest lost his first tooth I felt this pang of something resembling sentimentality! Pretty soon he will have an adult tooth! The tooth he will have for the rest of his life! The tooth of a man! It was nearly too much for me to handle.
Jeanie says:
She cracks me up!
twingles says:
“My favoritist tooth…it was the sharpest” – I am dying over here. How I miss they way little kids speak.
My son lost his first tooth in my sister’s pool – and for about 30 seconds, we all actually thought we might find it LOL.
Leslie says:
This is exactly my thought: dying of laughter. “It was the sharpest!”
Michelle Burkart says:
You have obviously done a beautiful job of teaching Annie about her feelings and how to express them. I love it!
Amber in OC says:
OMG!! She is so precious!! That is some pretty serious thinking on her part….I think most kids would be like “oh well, where is my money?!” What a sweetheart, you have such great little kids. I love hearing these stories!! So how much is the tooth fairy paying in LA? Here in OC, she is paying about two dollars.
Heather says:
That’s what she’ll be getting for the rest of her teeth! She got more this time as a first tooth bonus, and to make up for swallowing her tooth!
Amber in OC says:
She probably deserves a bonus for being so darn cute too!! Did you hear about that one teen mom girl? Farrah, I think is her name. Her kid got like a thousand bucks, or something outrageous like that. What planet does that tooth fairy live on??
Katrina says:
I’m in OC, too, and the Tooth Fairy has always paid $2 per tooth. My oldest son is 24 and he got $2 per tooth. My seven year old is losing teeth now, and she also gets $2 per tooth. And all the rest of them (we’ve got ten kids) got or are currently getting $2 per tooth. My older kids ask me, “Doesn’t the Tooth Fairy understand inflation?” Ha! I guess not. It’s always $2 per tooth. Oh well.
Kelli says:
I swallowed the first tooth I lost while eating an apple! I was devasted, so my dad had me call my grandma and ask her what I should do! She lovingly advised me to write the tooth fairy a letter- which I did! Annie will have a super cute story to tell about losing her first tooth!
