Ever since Annie was born, Dr. Looove has been on me to come in and get some tests done. All follow ups from pregnancy – check on my clotting disorder, make sure my blood sugar issues are resolved, things like that. Every time I brought Annie in for a checkup, Dr. Looove would bring up the tests. I’d always say, “I’m going to make an appointment before we leave!” and then I’d just walk out the door. I had plenty of excuses – I wanted to get in better shape, lose some of the baby weight, stuff like that.
The last month or so I’ve been feeling pretty off. There are obviously a million reasons this could be the case, but I had some other random symptoms – unexplained bruises, constant headaches, bleeding gums. So I emailed Dr. Looove hoping she’d tell me to take more vitamins, but she nailed me and told me I *HAD* to come in for a check up. Damn thorough doctors.
So, I went in, had my exam, blah blah. It was pretty run of the mill, except for the fact that Annabel tagged along and she did NOT appreciate that she wasn’t the center of attention, and yelped the entire time. It made being in a patient robe so much more fun. Dr. Looove ordered a series of blood tests, tests that actually had to be performed at the main hospital and not in the office. Boo.
I went to the lab yesterday (luckily without Annabel, thanks mom!) and was called back to have my blood taken after about twenty minutes of waiting. I sat down in the blood cubby and made myself comfortable. A tech came to me right away, and started explaining the tests to me. “This one is testing your liver, this one is testing to see if you have an ulcer (?!?!) this one is going stat so we can have it back in an hour for your other test.”
Record scratch!
“Other test?” I asked.
“Oh yes, you have to get a bleeding time, and we need this MEDICAL JARGON result back before we can do it. It usually takes an hour.” said the tech.
I made this face at that point:
Then the tech said, “Did you eat today? Because these first tests require eight full vials of blood.”
I was even less amused. I told her then that I was prone to fainting during blood draws and she said, “I’ll catch you.”
After she took roughly half of the blood in my body, I had to go sit in the waiting room for an hour. It had filled up considerably during my first draws, and it had filled up with…not healthy smelling people. It was so icky, and I have been in that waiting room a LOT. I spent the entire hour sitting like this:
I also did a lot of mouth breathing.
When my name was called after an hour I was so happy to get out of the waiting room I would have skipped if I hadn’t been so nauseous. A supervisor was required for the final blood test. I didn’t like the sound of that. He sat me in a different, secluded blood cubby where a bunch of equipment was. “Is this all for me?” I asked him. “Well, not all of it. Some of it is only if you code.” CHUCKLE! I wanted to smack him around a little.
He then explained what a bleeding time test is: a blood pressure cuff would be put on my arm and kept at a consistent pressure. Then an incision would be made into my forearm, and the supervisor would literally just sit there and time how long it took for my arm to stop bleeding.
As you can imagine, I was thrilled by the entire concept.
The incision sucked. He was as gentle as he could be, but an incision is an incision, you know? And I didn’t have an epidural, such a rip off. Then he started the timer and started talking to me about Thanksgiving, and all I could think was OMG I AM GOING TO BLEED TO DEATH I DON’T CARE ABOUT YAMS. Also, my arm and head were both throbbing at this point, and I was getting hot and sweaty and it felt like it took fooooooooorever but in fact, my arm stopped bleeding after five minutes. According to wikipedia, this is normal.
The supervisor then cleaned me up and placed a butterfly bandage over the incision while saying, “I’m using this to help reduce the scar, although this test always gives people scars.”
Whaaaaaaaaat? Things that would have been helpful to know BEFORE testing! Now I’ll never be a forearm model!
When I was finally released my arm looked like it had done battle:
I managed to make the two mile drive home (even though I was told not to drive, again THINGS THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN HELPFUL TO KNOW EARLIER), and then I crashed on my couch where I slept for three and a half hours. YAY for my mom.
And now I wait for the test results. Cliffhanger!
Kate @ UpsideBackwards says:
You poor thing! I think I would have fainted, if not from the blood draws then from the smelly people. I hope Mike cooked you a really yummy dinner when he got home.
Happy Thanksgiving for tomorrow!
Angel says:
You poor thing. I feel so bad for you.
How soon until you know the results?
Sidnie says:
Oh my! I’m getting queasy and light headed just thinking about all that blood.
And a bleeding test? Really? All this new medical technology, and that’s all they got? Crazy stuff.
Hope you’re feeling better now.
xoxo
Clarissa G. says:
When I first read that Annabel was yelping, I immediately pictured her sitting there on your phone writing up some reviews for her favorite locals places! Hahaha that brought the LOL’s.
But here’s to good test results! It’s unfortunate that you were put through all of that AND had to wait around :[ Although, it was quite entertaining to read the tweets as this all happened.
Cinthia says:
I hope everything comes up aces!
Or at the very least, if it’s something, then hopefully it’s minor and easily taken care of.
Good luck, best wishes and have an awesome Thanksgiving!!!!
Alison says:
The “forearm model” line had me laughing OUT LOUD. Loved it.
But eeks, I hope things are okay, back to normal, yadda yadda. I’ll be awaiting the results. ::HUGS::
LisaJ says:
Heather, praying that all these tests come back perfect.
Sorry about the yucky experience.
ClassyFabSarah says:
Crossing my fingers and toes for good results! That is one crazy barbaric test though, I’m just saying.
And I’m not lying, I think I’m feeling a little woozy just reading about it. Barf.
Amy says:
Poor you; hope the results come back quickly and it’s something banal and easily rectified.
Heather says:
If it helps at all, your tweets kept me entertained well in to the afternoon.
I hate blood work too, after losing my first at 18 weeks and being diagnosed with a molar pregnancy I have to have blood draws every 4-5 days during any other pregnancies. This lasts up to week 20. By week 20 I look like either a junkie or as though I’ve been been a very naughty catholic school girl . It comes from everywhere… elbow, forearm, bicep and foot.
Good times
Eric's Mommy says:
I hope everything is okay. You poor thing. I also love how you had NO info on the tests you were getting!
Fiona says:
Hi Heather
I really hope everything comes back clear. Fingers crossed for you.
Annie is so cute!

catherine lucas says:
O man… I only like blood when it is in veins, nowhere else. I hope they tell you that it’s blue… that at least would be some good news to go with.
I hope the test come out fine and that they can leave you alone for a while. Hard to believe that they take up to 8 full vials… Vampires they are!
Becky says:
Ick…that stinks!:( But there’s a reason they don’t tell you all that stuff ahead of time…because if they did, you wouldn’t make the appointment! It’s all over now and you can look forward to that phone call when the Dr. says you are fine and there is nothing to worry about…and you may commence with the baby making…or something like that!;) Love, hugs and prayers fromKansas!
Four Gambel Girls and A Guy ~ documenting the adventures we call life says:
Wow…that was a day! I hope your Thanksgiving is nice and relaxing!
tela says:
You had me laughing about drawing blood.
I think because it sounds sooooo similar to all my escapades with the medical profession–the latest being a “routine little mole removal” that ended up needing NINE stitches to close and got INFECTED.
Anyway, thank you.
Lisa says:
Holy crap! Dr. Looooove was probably vague about the tests so she didn’t scare you out of going Hope everything comes back fine.
Katrina says:
Yay for bleeding time tests! I have a different sort of clotting disorder (von willebrand’s) so I got that test repeatedly while being diagnosed. I still have the very small scars on my forearms. I bled for so long that I outlasted the official test and they just stopped it. Woo!
Elle says:
OMFG Heather!!! The things you have to go through. You poor thing. You are so brave, strong and always manage to have a great sense of humor. Hope all the results are what you hope for…xoxoxox
DrLori71 says:
Well, this post proves that I am an idiot (referring to yesterday’s DM which I shall never speak of again lol.)
We stopped doing bleeding times in our lab. Bleeding times seem a little barbaric…let’s make you bleed and hope it stops.
I hope all of your results are normal. I’d propose a diagnosis for your symptoms, but we’ve already established that I’m an idiot. Stick with Dr. Google. (On second thought, don’t – I heard he flunked out of medical school.)
Jennifer says:
I got the clotting test done (three times!) when I was in grade 6 or so. It’s likely too late to tell you now, but KEEP THE BANDAID ON for more than a few minutes, otherwise it’ll leave a big scar! The second and third test, I had learned this, and the scars they leave behind are minimal. The longer the bandaid is on, the less it scars. (Makes sense – it’s holding the skin together.) I took my first bandaid off within 20 minutes of finishing the test and I’ve got a huge scar. I’m not sure how long I left the other bandaids on for, but I have to look for the second scar. And I left the third one on even longer, and can’t find that scar – and yes, I looked.
Here’s hoping for clear test results!
Skye says:
oh my gosh! maybe the reason they don’t tell you these things ahead of time is because they know nobody would actually show up for their test if they knew! good job not fainting though. I am seriously impressed.
I hope someone else is cooking Thanksgiving dinner. I think this earns you a few days of lying on the couch and making Mike bring you everything you need
MissyK says:
Oh yeah…would have been OUT! On. The. Floor. I tell them that I can’t even SEE the needle or any of the paraphernalia or I will be toast. They always laugh. What part of I’M NOT KIDDING do they not understand?? Gaa! Makes me nuts. I feel for you…just went through a 3hr series of blood draws last weekend…it was ugly. 50 million people in that one little teeny room…NOT fun. Hope all the tests come back ok. Good vibes out to you.
Lora says:
Oh man! After all that I hope they get the answers they need to get you feeling better.
Elle says:
I really feel for you. I hate having my blood drawn. That amount should she illegal. I’ll be thinking of you. LOVE your photo reenactments.
Megan says:
I would have passed out. That sounded absolutely horrible. At least scars can be cool.
Nicole says:
It’s a good thing you really like your doc! I would have been much more irritated at the lack of info going into the testing.
Hope all turns out well! Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
Lisa_in_WI says:
Hope all the tests come back normal. And Happy Thanksgiving!!!
Kelly says:
Stinky people in waiting areas suck.
Have a lovely turkey day!
Julia says:
When I was about 10 my younger brother and I got nosebleeds ALL the time (almost daily) and we had to go get that test. 20 years later we both have a tiny scar from that. But I’m thinking non scaring thoughts for you sweet girl
Lamb says:
Yikes! I can’t believe there’s a test like that. Heather, you just sent my fear of doctors skyrocketing! What on earth could the point of that test possibly be? Couldn’t they just wait until you cut yourself accidentally at home and have you report your findings to the hospital??
Oooooh, no more breakfast for me this morning. I am FREAKED out!
Funnelcloud Rachel says:
OMG OMG OMG! I am not a fan of doctors, or blood, or pain…and when I read the part about the INCISION, I had to look away from the computer and put my head between my knees. Yowch! Glad you’re braver than I am. Hope everything turns out ok!
Elizabeth says:
I didn’t even know there was a test that required them to cut open your damn arm!
Glad it’s over and I hope your test results come back normal and asap!!!
BTW the pictures are hysterical….Also Happy Thanksgiving!!!
Michelle says:
When my daughter was 4 years old she was having tons of unexplained bruising and they performed that same test. I was HORRIFIED. The doctor ordered the typical CBC and whatever and then said, “Oh, and we’ll need an Ivy Bleeding Time test, too.” Okay, I had no idea what that meant. Yep, I’m sure the horror on my face was evident when they said they were going to slice my little baby’s forearm and just sit and WAIT for it to stop bleeding. O.M.G.
Unfortunately Mikaela’s arm didn’t stop bleeding for over ELEVEN minutes (which is about equal to eternity if you’re 4 or a mommy holding her bleeding 4 year old!)
Hers also left quite a scar, and no one ever told me it would. Yuck, I’m getting queasy now just thinking about that day!
I really hope all of your test results are normal!
Alicia says:
Uh, WHAT? That test sounds about as cutting-edge as leeches.
Deborah says:
Well that sounded like a little piece of hell, didn’t it? Gah. I was cringing just READING about that incision. I hope your test results come back with NOTHING wrong, though! And I’m glad you finally went to the doctor; you can’t afford to mess around with your health!
(((hugs)))
Jennie says:
Ick!!! I know that waiting room and I feel wholeheartedly for you! I’m pretty sure the ONLY cure is all you can eat Thanksgiving pie. I’d take your pie intake pretty seriously over the next few days.
Dacia says:
WOW. What a day. I had the bleed time test done, but I had to sign a release that stated “this procedure may leave a scar”. I hope all results come back good. Happy Thanksgiving to all of you.
Christy says:
I love the uni-bomber hoodie.
All that blood work sucks, sorry. I’ve had a bleeding time before and it was completely different and I felt the whole time that the girl doing it was making it up as she went along. Now I know for sure she was.
Good luck.
amanda says:
This is all bad. I have the heebie jeebies just reading this story. Hope the results are A-OK!
Angie M. says:
yikes!! i was so looking forward to seeing your forearm in “forearm monthly” now that’ll never happen
but really…hope everything turns out ok. i’ll be thinking about you
xoxo
Marnie * says:
I don’t do well with blood draws either. I can not look in the direction of the draw and I am actually feeling sick just reading about yours and seeing the bandage pictures. Ugh…..
Hope everything is ok.
Tara. says:
That whole thing made me squirm! I hate blood and needles! You’re a rock star! I’m hoping that the news comes soon! Please rest and keep us updated. Thinking of you!
Sorry about that dream killer-no forearm model career for you anymore!
Karen says:
It’s never nice to have your blood drawn. I work in the laboratory as a Technologists and it’s one of the necessary evils of the job. Even though I deal with needles, I always look away when I get my blood drawn.
I would like to direct you to a reliable website regarding the what’s, why’s and how’s of laboratory tests.
http://www.labstestsonline.org
It explains in simple, straight forward language what the test is testing for, why your physician might be ordering the test, how the test is performed and collected. The information is comprehensive and easy to understand. The articles are reviewed by physicians and laboratory technologists for validity and accuracy. It is a trusted resource that I recommend to other health care professionals.
Sometimes the lab seems like a big black hole where your sample goes in and out comes a number. What happens in the middle, to many, is a mystery. And to add insult to injury, in order to get that number we poke you with a sharp object. Browse around the website to get a better understanding of what’s what when it comes to lab tests that are going to be collected.
The only information on the site regarding the bleeding time test is to state that platelet function tests done on an analyzer have largely replaced the bleeding time test. The bleeding time actually provides very little diagnostic information and is considered by many as archaic. There are now MUCH better ways of accessing platelet function.
I truly hope your test results are favourable and everything is OK.
From a very cold (it’s -30C with the windchill) Canadian Lab Tech.

In the message I just posted, the link I gave had a spelling mistake and doesn’t go to the correct site.
Here is the correct link:

Sorry about that.
Maile says:
Omg! I changed insurance after Isabel was born so I have no doctor yet to nag me to get tested re: my lovely clotting disorders… I know I should go see a dr but omg ewwwwww I don’t want to bleed!!!
(hope you get some good or at least informative helpful results)
Glenda says:
I hate having my blood drawn too
Here’s hoping that the results are perfect and Happy Thanksgiving to you, Mike, Annie, Rigby and the rest of the fam.
tiers says:
If bloods not your thing, I feel for you. I’ve had multiple back surgeries and had to donate 2 UNITS of my OWN blood each time! If that doesn’t familiarize you with blood donations, it should at least make you a little more comfortable with it! Best of luck.
Tami says:
I know what you mean about sitting in a waiting room full of stinky people. But mine was in the vet office and it took forever. The doctor took three biobsy of my dog and when I saw what he was doing I was about to faint.. They didnt num the area and that floored me. I got light headed and broke out in a sweat. I had to sit down. I thought I could handle things like that if it wasnt on me.. But no I cant handle any of it.
Good luck on your test. My thoughts and prayers are with you!!
Anna says:
Ahhh I am so scared to have blood drawn. Never had it done, been told to get it done but no no no!
Besides all the horribleness of blood being drawn I think the worst part for me would have been sitting in a waiting room for an hour! I absolutely loath sitting in Doctors offices. I have no patience and I am convinced that all the nurses just sit around chatting half the time instead of keeping things moving! I’m sure that is not the case in most professional Dr. offices but I have been to some sucky places.
Good luck with your results!!
Dina says:
I had a bleeding time test as well and it does leave a scar, but not a horrible one (and I am prone to scarring). It’s like a half-inch long and pretty thin, not hugely visible. Hope everything is good!
Melissa says:
I also had a bleed test but it didn’t leave a scar. At least not a permanent one…I’d say it was gone in six months? And I scar easily (stretch marks galore, thanks baby #1).
I had some of the symptoms you mentioned…are you taking iron?
Hope you get great results!
Hollie says:
Oh you brave woman! Hope all is well with the results. Waiting is always the hardest part. I had a bleeding test done about 6 yrs ago and have that cute little scar to show off to all my friends and complete strangers.
Rebecca says:
You’ll be able to tell some killer prison stories with those forearm marks!
Ashley says:
I have needlephobia, and what you just described sounds pretty akin to what my version of the 9th circle of hell would be. Goodness gracious. I would have to be completely and totally comatose for them to even take more than 1 vial of blood, much less 8 oh yeah and this little CUT ON YOUR ARM THING. In short, you are brave lady, and I applaud you/am impressed/glad you didn’t pass out/get sick.
I hope the test results come back positive!!
MyBabyBeluga says:
That sounds awful. Good luck with the tests!
Jess says:
Well they definitely should’ve told you about the not driving and all that. And ew ew ew about the stinky people.
I hope you get your results quickly! I went in for a doctor’s appointment for pain in my stomach in October, I was in so much pain. They thought it was an ulcer. Then they thought it was my gallbladder. All my tests kept coming back normal and then eventually my doctor told me to wait and see (wtf?!) and I was in pain and basically crying every day. My mom finally came to a doctor’s appointment with me and the doctor said “oh, maybe you have IBS and are in a two month flare-up because we never diagnosed it” and my mom who is a nurse goes “you think?!”
So now I’m on medicine and will be in the flare of IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) until everything calms down. I wish I had a doctor like Dr. Loove. At least she cares!!
Veronika says:
I faint at blood draws too, so I always ask if I can lay down. LOL And I’ve done the other test too, just they didn’t cut me they punched two little ovals of skin out of my arm. It left scars. Everyone always asks “GASP! What happened there??” And I have to tell them the whole stupid story. I wish I knew it would scar before they did it too. I would have said no.
JJ Keith says:
I have that scar. No has ever noticed but I get peeved whenever I see it and I’ve had it for ten years already I had no idea what they were going to do either. Boo.
Hope the results are good.
Trish says:
I’ve had the bleeding time test done too. It is unpleasant. And yes, it does leave a scar. But it’s a small scar, and it fades well.
I hope the results are good!
Not a BLOODY chance says:
HA! If some goon said he was gonna stick me like a pig and make me bleed all over the pace, I’d pop ’em in the nose and tell him to go eff himself! Like HELL anybody would ever cut me! LOL!
Marti from Michigan says:
MAJOR Ick!!! I too hope the results are good. I HATE blood draws! All the lab workers are vampires!
Rumour Miller says:
Healthy vibes being sent your way! I hate blood draws and I’ve never had to do what you just did.
Good luck with all the results.
Amber says:
Ugh. Did you faint?! I would’ve. Ugh. Just reading it made me feel woozy. That’s the worst blood test I’ve ever heard of. How long until you know the results? Hope everything’s okay!
Jessi @ Quirky Cookery says:
Wow, I can’t believe they didn’t tell you all those things in advance. :S At the very least, they should’ve told you that you’d need someone to drive you home, but they still should’ve let you know how many tests they were doing, that it was going to take several hours, and oh yeah, it was going to scar, geesh. Yay for moms who can fill in for all of that.
Leigh says:
I hope this means you won’t have to have blood drawn for at least 10 years now! Jeez! You went through so much….I hope all the best for your results.
Hope you are all having a good weekend together! Happy Thanksgiving!
punkinmama says:
That is the most ridiculous thing I’ve read (today)! I have never heard of such a thing! And I agree that you should have been told about all of this *beforehand*! Though I have a feeling, Dr. Looooove would have known you would have bailed on the tests if you were told!
Lissa says:
Speaking from a veterinary tech’s perspective, we very rarely have to perform a similar bleeding test on pets (usually dogs). It’s called a buccal mucosal bleeding test and we use a lancet to make a small incision on the gums and wait to see how long the bleeding stops. If you think it is horrible to have done on a person, think how hard it is to hold a dog still and hold their lip up for 2+ minutes! Thank god we have so many other tests that can be run with simple blood draws to mostly eliminate this test.
