My cousin Leah’s shower was at my house yesterday. The other bridesmaids and I had been planning it for weeks, but one thing we did not plan on was a record-breaking heat wave hitting Los Angeles.
September is usually one of the best months in Southern California, so I wasn’t worried about rain or cool temperatures ruining our backyard brunch. Five days before the shower, my dad sent me a text:
The high for Sunday is currently projected to be 102° (that’s almost 39° for you celsius lovers)
That…was not going to work. So it was on to Plan B. The only problem was, we didn’t have a Plan B. Everyone I interacted with in the days leading up to the shower had an opinion: Get pop-up shades! Borrow big fans! Rent misters! Then my mom had the winning idea: move all the furniture out of the front room and have the shower there.
As I set up the tables the night before the shower I thought, “Well…it will be cozy.”
And while it was cozy, and my air conditioner wasn’t quite up to the job of keeping a house of thirty-two people cool, it was still really nice. We bridesmaids (along with some massive help from my mom and aunts) divvied up responsibilities and gave Leah a great party.
Leah Loves Ted sign from Minted…I should have also bought one that says “Ted Loves Leah!”
The letters were more than two feet tall, I like to go big.
Leah loves Bloody Marys, so we put together a killer Bloody Mary bar, plus a mimosa bar for those who prefered to start their day with bubbles.
We had a huge spread of delicious food…
…including a donut “cake!”
We all had a blast celebrating Leah:
But don’t worry, we didn’t forget about Ted!
I think between my wedding and baby showers, Leah has helped throw me three or four of these things. I was excited to return the favor and really wanted to go all-out for her. She is so special to me (and many other people, too).
Leah and Ted got engaged almost twenty-two months ago and at the time it felt like their wedding would never arrive. It’s hard to believe the wedding is now only five weeks away! It’s going to be amazing, I can’t wait for them to finally be married and then give me a little baby cousin I can play with but not be responsible for (no pressure, Leah).

Perfect…love the donut cake which I’m stealing immediately! What did you do to the glasses? They look so cute but couldn’t get a close up
Heather says:
Oh! I will have to see if I have a better picture. I hot-glued burlap ribbons to the glasses, and then tied wooden heart charms onto the rims. The hot-glue just peels right off when you’re done with it!
Liz says:
How beautiful and thoughtful! I love the donut cake too and will be stealing that as well.
Lenora says:
It looks like a beautiful party! Now a weird question but I like to be able to pronounce things correctly when I am reading (weird), is Leah name pronounced Lee-a or just Lee?
Heather says:
Lee-uh!
Leah says:
Mine too. People have spelled it some interesting ways–like “Leigha.”
Glenda says:
Looks beautiful!!!
Kristen says:
You did a terrific job! Everything looks gorgeous! Glad you were able to come up with a workable Plan B! Also, I hate to be that person, but I looooove the dress you wore – where is it from?
Heather says:
It’s from Anthropologie! But…I got it a couple of years ago (sad face).
Kristin W. says:

Susan says:
Heather, love, love, that you had shower at home. Just cozy and intimate and beautiful. Not dissing on showers at halls but sometimes they are just so over the top, your almost uncomfortable. I have had a many party planned to use my big backyard only for the weather to ruin it and I have a small house but I have yet to find a guest complain =)
Alexandria says:
I love the heart Annabelle is making. Perfect shower! I have two daughters with a bday in Nov, so I have also done the whole all furniture into the garage thing. It works out perfect.
Sue says:
Every single thing looks perfectly beautiful, Heather!!!!! WOW!!!

The shower looks like it was so great! Yay!
Please tell Leah congratulations from me. And tell Annie I love the heart shape she made with her hands foer the group pic!
Also,James is awesome and that is the first time he hasn’t had a huge grin! Makes sense, what guy wants to be at a bridal shower with a bunch of women? Lol!
Heather says:
HA I know, right? But he has to get used to it, he’s the ring bearer!!
I had no idea Annie knew how to do that heart shape! That kid surprises me every day.
Lanie says:
What a beautiful shower. Sending all best to Leah & Ted!
Sarah says:
It looks like you all did a great job! I’m already married, but want to throw me a baby shower?
Heather says:
Sure!!! I mean…it’s not like I don’t already have a document on my computer full of ideas or anything!
DefendUSA says:
So…if I decide to throw that “married for 30” wedding surprise…I’ll hire you! Think sparkly and for 50 people! You’ve got 18 months!
Leslie says:
Looks awesome!! That donut cake is insanely amazing! Now I want a donut. So happy for Leah and Ted-Fred
M says:
That’s so nice! Not at all my cousin’s shower. All of us BM got an email months after being asked to be in the wedding that we owe $700 for the shower she wanted at a restaurant…yeah, so that was really great…not.
Heather says:
YIKES! I told my cousin she didn’t get a say in any of the planning!
