The very best gift I ever received for my birthday was a set of vintage green transfer wear and a basket of my favorite things like burts bees lip balm and avocados.
OCMommyEsq says:
For my birthday before the birth of my son, my sisters gave me a photo session with a local photographer for after my little guy was born. I have a good camera and take decent shots, so it didn’t occur to me to pay a professional to document that special time in the life of our new family. I cherish those photos so much (even the ones with the still very swollen me in them), and I’m so thankful that my sisters gave me the gift of those perfect memories.

It would have to be the tiny purple boombox (exactly the same purple as the top of your blog) I received in 1994. I was but a wee babe, but it was the year I was introduced to Boyz II Men. And oh, what a magical year that was

Hi Heather!
Long time reader…but dont’ comment much…your giveaway is bringing me out of the woodwork.
How fun would that trip be!
Hmmm….best birthday gift I have given….a letter to my sweet mother, explaining what her precious life meant to me. We were aware of the lung cancer that was slowly taking her. She died two days after her birthday. I read the letter to her in private and we cried together. it was an amazing moment.
My birthday is next week and it would make a great early birthday present.

DUDE. Want.
The best birthday present I ever got was my engagement ring. My husband brought this huge present for me to open and then when I was turned around (watching the waiters flambee banana’s foster), a cloche came and under it was the box. And he got down on one knee and we’ve been fighting, I mean married, ever since.
Leslie Wolschelger says:
By far my best birthday gift was my ultimate and super fly Huffy Sweet Thunder bicycle I got when I was 6 years old! It came with a stylish soft cover on the handle bars, which unfortunelty did not prevent me tumbling from it 3 years later and splitting my chin open all in an effort to beat my sister home. I must state I was winning until she cut me off!

So she was my gift two years ago and she is definitely a gift. She has a joy for life I hope rubs off on me a little more She just lives it up. You can tell, even at 2 1/2 how everything is just fun and wonderful!

Very best bday present is a tie – I was able to avoid the hoopla that goes with turning 40 by having my daughter three weeks before that occasion (babies make people forget everything) and then on my 41st bday at my best friend surprise 40th party (since my bday was on Sat)- she stops and goes wait everyone – it really is her birthday today and it needs to be celebrated also – however the best was her son asking when was I going to be 40 – yes he gets extra college money
Have a great Birthday month
Melissa says:
Best birthday gift(s) I ever gave: Sent my parents to Vegas (complete with $100 gambling money!) when I get my first paycheck from a lucrative job during the dot.com startup craze. The look on their faces when they realized it was airfare, hotel and the extra $$ for penny slots remains one of the best moments I’ve ever enjoyed.
Best birthday gift I’ve ever received: This year my husband took me for a surprise trip to Madison. We saw “Rent”, went to a wonderful dinner at a great restaurant. The thought he put in to setting it up and selecting the gift made it priceless. The show was great too!
What an awesome give-away! Thanks!

The best birthday gift I ever received was a surprise panty party for my 25th birthday!
From about the age of 15 until today (32) everytime my Mom & Dad would ask me what I wanted for my birthday, I would say “Oh, just get me underwear!”
So they very sneakily planned a big surprise party where each of the guest had to bring me a pair of panties. They had to attach a name tag to each pair and hang them across my parents living room on clothes line.
I did not have a clue and dude, I totally cleaned house on the panties. I think I got like 76 new pair that day. Everything from thongs to granny bloomers. It was awesome. I even had a panty birthday cake.
I was only slightly embarrassed that my Dad was there, but now he’s gone so I am glad I have those memories of him blushing as I walked the clothes line and read the tags from my guests

My best birthday: definitely ten years ago, when I spent a three day weekend at the Glastonbury Festival. I was there with only one of my friends, but it was such an amazing, awesome and memorable, (kind of – alcohol was involved on the Friday night!), weekend.
Of course, winning this would come close, seeing as my b/d is the 23rd…

How fun! And my best birthday gift? Well it was four days after but delivering my first baby. I had a really craptastic pregnancy and had gotten out of the hospital a couple days before my birthday just to return a couple days after my birthday. I delivered her on August 4th (my bday is July 31st) which was 5 weeks early and she was perfect. :o) I thank the good Lord everyday for my miracle. Best present ever!!!

Rach L in Vancouver says:
I didn’t know until 20 years later that the worst birthday gift I’d ever received was actually the best.
When I was four years old, I begged my parents for a Surf ‘N Sun Barbie kit for my birthday. The commercials showed Barbie going from novice to expert in the ocean (read: bathtub) in about 15 seconds, and looking AMAZING in her red white and blue striped bikini (I didn’t really understand that I was Canadian at this point). I asked for it for weeks. I made sure they knew the exact name of the one I wanted. I was very specific. The day I turned five, I ripped into my parents’ gift, and seeing the tell tale bubblegum Barbie pink let out a HUGE scream….until I realized that they had got me Pool Party Barbie. My face fell, and the tears bubbled to the surface. They assured me that they had looked everywhere for the surfing set, but it was not to be found and they had done their best to find the next best thing.
I couldn’t help myself. I was devastated and I let it show. I didn’t open it right away, and when I did, I just stared at the pink beach furniture and plastic bananas in despair. Eventually I learned to play with it, despite its defects and got on with my life. I was five now, after all, life goes on.
Ever since, this moment has haunted me. I saw my devastation mirrored in the eyes of my parents as they watched my face fall. I remember how they must have felt when their little girl cried (rather selfishly, albeit, but still) on her birthday. I wish that I had responded with the graciousness and gratefulness I now feel whenever I receive a gift. Now when I look back, I’m so grateful for pool party Barbie and her plastic bananas, for teaching me that a gift means more than whats in the package, and when someone hands you their heart in Bubblegum Pink, you’d do well to play gently and tenderly with a big smile of thanks.
(Sorry so long)

The best birthday present I ever received was a letter from my brother. I love cards so much and give them whenever I can. I had made a comment to my brother that he didn’t always give me a birthday card. It so happens that this was my 21st birthday and my brother was dying of cancer. He presented me with a typed letter on my birthday telling me how much I meant to him and how proud he was of me. He also told me I was going to be fine, once he left me. He had stayed up really late one night, writing it and gave it to me, typos and all. Being an editor, that would normally make me crazy. But, now I treasure it. This letter is now framed in my bedroom as it is one of the last things Scott ever gave me. He passed away on 3/3/1995.

My best birthday was when I was 8. In Utah Pioneer Day is celebrated 2 days before my birthday so it fell on a holiday weekend. I went to a neighborhood carnival hoping I would win a go cart there was a drawing for. I also became a member of my church that day and was baptized in my white dress my Mom sewed for me.

The very best birthday gift I ever got, by far was my son. His birthday is the day after mine, and though I had not planned to have this sweet little dude anywhere near my birthday(the first week of December), seeing that his due date was in Janurary, he was a wonderful suprise and really the kicker, he was born the day after my birthday and finally got to come home from the hospital on Christmas morning. If I never got another gift again, I would not complain. Nearly six years later he is still my greatest gift and joy!

For my mom’s 50th birthday I had all of her friends and family write her a letter talking about how they value her friendship and what she means to them. Then I took all of the letters and had them bound as a book and presented that to her on her birthday. She loved it!
Hope I win and get to see everyone at the conference! I would love to us this as a terrific learning opportunity.
Happy Birthday!
Kim says:
Ok, even though I never win anything, I will give it a go.
My most memorable birthday was my 30th. Jeremy made a pinata that looked like a skein of yarn and had my friends and family fill it with really good yarn (this is a big deal for a knitter such as myself). hen I popped it open I was so excited and he told me, 30 balls of yarn for 30 years of life. He’s so cute.
Even if I don’t win (cause I probably won’t) I am still coming up one day just to hang out with you and Miss Annie!

Every year my aunt sends flowers to my job to celebrate the joy that is me. On my 21st birthday I was working at a Presidential campaign (Kerry-Edwards) and it was the homestretch before our loss (and we all know what happens to those poor suckers) and I’m miserable and working like 20 hours a day and a senior in college. Anyway! In walks this man with a tell-tale blue box. Oh yes, a Tiffany box. And I’m like who has been sent Tiffany in the office?!?! And then that man with the Tiffany blue box walks right over to my desk and lo, I am the one who gets Tiffany in the office.
And then my friends got me wasted on gin and vodka. Happy 21 to me.

Lindsay from Florida says:
This sounds amazing!!! I couldn’t come even if I won (because that’s the week I’m moving up to Boston), but I’ll share my best birthday gift anyway. For my 17th birthday, my two best friends constructed a life-size Monopoly board (our favorite game) to the exact specifications of my bedroom ceiling. (And it’s been up there for the past 7 years, only coming down now because of the aforementioned move.)
For each square, there was a picture of me and a friend (with those two friends who made it being the best/most expensive squares, lol), and each friend had written a birthday message on his/her square. For “specialty squares,” they were filled up with my favorite movies, TV shows, etc. “Free Parking” had a picture of me being surprised with my car when I was 16, each “railroad” was me at each year’s high school Homecoming, “Jail” was jail bars drawn over a picture of my cat that I couldn’t stand, etc.
It took them months to do it all. It’s the best gift because of its sheer scope and creativity, but even more so because I FELT so loved when I received it, like I was worth all the time it took them.

My best birthday gift will be traveling to Utah to celebrate with you and Annie! Okay, okay, so my birthday is in January. Just a small detail…so this is either horribly late or way early, but a girl can try, right?
Best birthday gift (really!) was a 45 of Shaun Cassidy singing “Da Do Ron Ron” backed with “Hey Deanie” given to me on my 8th birthday by my BFF Lisa Hancock. I think we listened to that record until we wore out the grooves. (You may have to Google that to get the reference since you’re under 35!) There’s no better feeling than waking up on your birthday morning when you’re a little kid and you’re actually EXCITED by another number on your personal dial. (Going for the “oh my gosh, is she ever OLD” vote now!)
But seriously, my best “grown-up” gifts have been anything my kids have fashioned, made or done for me on my birthday. They’re awesome and I’m amazed and humbled by them on an almost daily basis.
Regardless of winning the prize, I would love to get the chance to talk to you, Heather. You seem like an amazing person and I have been right where you are now, although I’m farther along on the path. I hope for the best for you and your lovely family.

The best birthday gift I ever rec’d was 30 clowns from my terminally ill mother. She had always given me a clown at my birthday every year to add to my collection.
When she was diagnosed with cancer she was given 3 months to live which just happened to be the day of my birthday which is the 31st. On the 1st of the month she told me to take a box out of the basement and take it home. There were instructions to not open it until my birthday. She knew me soooo well.
Thankfully she was still living on my birthday and I opened her gift and it still touches my heart 13 years later. It was a box of 30 clowns and a note from her telling me she wanted to still be able to give me clowns for another 30 years.
Unfortunately, she lost her battle to cancer 10 days later…

Best birthday surprise I ever gave someone was when I flew across country with my 3 month old baby, by myself might I add, to surprise my sister at her 30th surprise birthday party. It was totally worth it when my 3 year old niece saw me, smiled, and ran to give me a hug. Instantly I started to cry.
