On Friday morning I knew I had to see Dr. Looove. I’d thrown up all night, and the pain in my upper abdomen was really intense. After sweating in bed all morning, I went into her office. The first thing she had me do was pee in a cup. This is where I tell you all I AM NOT PREGNANT. I knew I wasn’t and it was confirmed by the pee test. So THERE to everyone who doubted me…MOM.
Anyway. Dr. Loove’s exam consisted of the usual stuff, then she had my lay on my back so she could press on various parts of my stomach. Holy. Hell. That hurt like a mofo. She ruled out appendicitis, then had her nurse come in to draw some blood. Luckily for everyone involved, I didn’t faint! After the blood draw, Dr. Looove came back into my room to say she suspected I had gastritis, but the blood tests would help confirm and/or rule out other stuff. She put me on the BRAT diet (Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast) and sent me home. Upon arriving home, I vomited, and then passed out on the couch.
I woke up about four hours later to a phone call from Dr. Loove that confirmed the gastritis diagnosis. Mike convinced me to eat something, and went into the kitchen to get me a snack. About two minutes later I heard a crash and then a scream. Mike came running out of the kitchen and I could see blood dripping from his hand. One look at his pinky finger and I announced we were going to the emergency room. On Friday Night, at 9:30pm. WITH ANNABEL. And don’t forget, I’m still barfing.
We managed to get to the ER in one piece. I sent Mike in to register while I grabbed Annie out of the car. Annie thought this night time trip was just about the coolest thing EVER, and couldn’t stop shouting and squealing to express her glee. As you can probably guess, that didn’t make her popular in a waiting room full of the ill and injured.
I am too young to understand what decorum means!
Mike was taken back right away, since his cut was deep enough that it was spurting blood. That left me in the waiting room with my upset stomach, a pounding headache and Miss Excited. I sent a text message to my cousin Leah who said she’d come right over. I knew I had to get Annabel out of there, but I didn’t want to leave Mike alone. Then the decision was taken out of my hands.
All over the emergency room, signs are posted warning to stay away if you have the flu or flu-like symptoms. I saw the signs but thought nothing of them since I didn’t have the flu. But while I was sitting in the waiting room chairs, trying to get Annie to SIT DOWN for the 187th time, I felt a wave hit me, and I knew I was going to puke. There wasn’t time to ask where the bathroom was. All I managed to do was make it to the nearest trash can – the trash can that just happened to be in front of the admitting desk.
The two nurses and security guard jumped backward, surprised. One of the nurses asked me if I was OK. The security guard looked at me suspiciously and said, “Ma’am, do you have…THE FLU?”
First of all, don’t call me ma’am, it makes me feel old.
I told him no, and that I’d been to the doctor just a few hours earlier and all my blood work had show up clean. The other nurse was sympathetic but stern.
“I’m sorry, but we have a lot of patients here with compromised immune systems, as well as pregnant women, and we can’t put them at risk for the flu. Unless your symptoms are severe and you need to be seen by a doctor, we need you to go outside, honey.”
I looked back at where Annabel was emptying the contents of my purse onto the waiting room floor. Leaving would probably save every one’s sanity. I sent texts to Leah and Mike telling them we were leaving and why, and then hit the road with Annie.
I stopped to barf on the way home.
Mike arrived back at the apartment about two hours later. Leah had stayed with him the whole time, even when HE GOT NINE STITCHES (Leah is awesome). I instantly stopped feeling guilty about leaving him there. Had I been in the room when he’d had the stitches put in, I’d have fainted. You know how I feel about stitches! And I have to look at it every day to change the dressing:
You’re welcome for sparing you the gory stitches picture. Shudder
He has to get his stitches removed in seven to ten days. The sight of nine stitches in his finger will plague me for seven to ten YEARS. Meanwhile, I am still barfing, my stomach still hurts, and Annabel thinks this weekend has been the coolest party of her life.
Elle says:
Poor Mike and poor you. That would be agony. At least Annie got to party like it was 1999.
I hope you get better very soon. x
Jenn says:
Aaahhh , Poor friends!! I hope you feel better Heather & I hope Mike
isn’t in pain & his cut heals quickly!!! I must admit Iove that picture
of Annie!! There is such JOY on her face!!! I bet her cuteness made
You feel a lot better?!?!
Try to get some rest & feel better soon!!!
Gemini-Girl says:
oy!! you know- sick days are the best weight loss system in the world (i know you hate me right now)

Michelle in MO says:
Ugh. What a weekend. I hope Annie and Rigby take good care of you sick and wounded. Perhaps later you may feel up to a video documenting how they had to run the household while you and Mike were down.
I feel you. I have chronic Mono and I’m in the worst flare up ever. I feel like my bones have been hit with baseball bats.
Molly says:
Oh my gah. How miserable! I can just picture you turning to see Fun Times Annie dumping your purse on the floor. Adorable pic of her, btw. Hoping for a quick recovery for you guys!
Lynn from For Love or Funny says:
Yeesh. Yowza. Wow. Blech. Yikes. Hope you guys are better, SOON!
Madi G. says:
Two words: Steri-strips.
I’m *shocked* they used stitches on his hand. That’s not good. Stitches have virtually no “stretch”; they should have used Steri-strips.
Last time I needed patching — after I broke up a dog fight and had my hand ripped open down to the bone (it was actually pretty cool; you could see the tendons and bone and stuff! I’ve always wondered what was inside!) — they used steri-strips (about 80 of them; the equivalent of apx 100 stitches). But even then, they immobilized my hand with a huge splint!
Incidentally, you can buy steri-strips at the drug store.
You can also order surgical scrub and wound wash saline at the drug store.
Therefore, unless your hand is ripped to shreds as mine was (actually, I would have patched it myself, had it not been an animal bite. Bite=super prone to infection, so I needed antibiotics straight away), we just use steri-strips. If you think you need antibiotics, you just visit the doctor the following day.
– Stop the bleeding with pressure (may take a while.)
– Irrigate the wound under running water to remove debris.
– Wash with surgical scrub or anti-bacterial soap like Dial for 10 full minutes.
– Rinse for an additional 5 minutes under running water.
– Pat dry with sterile gauze pads (hint: everything that touches the wound must be sterile from this point forward).
– Apply antibiotic ointment inside the wound using a sterile swab or a rolled bit of gauze.
– Don gloves and apply steri-strips (they come with directions — a steri-strip is a strip of plastic that’s glued down on either side of the wound, to pull it together. They last several days; basically a more permanent butterfly bandage.)
– Wrap with gauze/rolled gauze. If it’s still bleeding a bit, top off with a layer or two of self-adhering bandage/Ace bandage. (I use pretty self-adhering bandages — you can get them from pet supply stores like PetEdge (http://www.petedge.com/product/Top-Performance-Pet-Bandaging-Tapes/47508.uts — It’s the same wrapping you use on casts and pet bandages.) They apply a bit of pressure, but they’re not bulky like an Ace bandage.
My method is nurse-approved! (My mom is a nurse).
No trips to the ER! Especially with baby! Poor Heather. I would have left Mike on his own. He’s a big boy. There’s no way I’d stay at the hospital puking and all sick, especially with a delightful baby! All I know is that sick/injured people are bitchy. I wouldn’t dare take my baby near them! And not only are they apt to be mean, but they’re also potentially contagious!!! NO. WAY!
I’d recommend a follow-up with Mike’s normal physician. That hand/finger needs to be immobilized. He’s probably okay for the next day or two, as the high degree of swelling will inhibit movement. But after that, he’s going to risk nerve damage.
If you don’t feel like visiting the physician, check out the first aid section of the drug store or a medical supply store — the latter will have tons of splints.
If you absolutely must, make your own splint. I’ve found the best homemade splints for hands are made with thick wire (visit Home Depot or get crafty with a couple lengths of coat hanger — just use wire snips) Bend it to conform to his hand. The hand and finger should be in a neutral position (if it’s his thumb, it’ll need to extend down to his wrist.) Wrap the wires with tape, especially over the ends. Then, wrap the wire with some rolled gauze. Then, attach it to his hand with rolled gauze or an Ace bandage. That should stay on until the stitches come out.

Dr. Thom says:
This is precisely on spot! (And now you can say Dr-approved!)
Personally, I wonder why more people don’t opt to do this at home! It’s the exact same thing we’ll do in the ER. In fact, it’s better because most patients aren’t brought right back as Mike was. The longer you wait to close a wound, the greater the chance of infection.
Fixing it at home, if you can do it properly as Madi has explained above, is ideal (unless it’s extremely contaminated, as in the case of a bite wound.) Then simply follow up with your GP the following day.
I also agree with Madi’s point – that wound should definitely be immobilized. A down-to-the-bone wound is most certainly going to be associated with nerve damage. He may lose sensation or function in that finger if it remains unsplinted.

Lissa says:
Great…now I learn! I had a bite wound a few years ago involving my first two fingers. It was pretty filleted and required stitches and a trip to the ER, which I knew already since I’m in the veterinary field. I wrapped with gauze bandages for the first week and then lighter coverings for the 2nd week, but I was never given a splint. I have permanent nerve damage to the fingertip of my index finger…I do know that I lost sensation just a couple of hours after the injury while sitting in the waiting room so I don’t know if a splint would have prevented permanent damage. But it’s really annoying as that is my vein-feeling finger for doing blood draws at work and I’ve had to relearn with a different finger.
heather says:
eek! no good… but as the spouse of someone with MS I totally understand the nurses point of view. I hate taking B into the hospital when something goes wrong, heck I hate taking anyone in our family to the hospital when something goes wrong…. the ER is typically where one of us ends up getting sick with some other mystery fun.
Glad you had your cousin to go hang out with him.
Really hope the barfing lets up soon… completely sucks, especially when you have a little giggling monkey to chase all day.
Heather says:
Oh, I TOTALLY understood. And if it HAD been the regular flu, I would have made Mike drive himself. I never want to get anyone else sick!
Audra says:
I’m so sorry you’re not feeling well and that you had to leave your house…for the hospital…with a toddler. I hope that you were able to crash for the rest of the weekend. Any chance that your illness was triggered by stress with all that is going on with the house?
Chris says:
that’s what I was thinking, house..escrow…papers, it’s enough to make the toughest stomach do a few belly flops.
Dumb Mom says:
I love it that one of the comments above instructed you on how to fix it yourself! And, it’s so detailed. I’m guessing you wouldn’t make it past step one without fainting! What’s your prediction?! Anyway, what a sucky way to spend a day (and night). I’m sorry. But, at least one member of the family got her ER Room par-tay on. Gotta love the good mo0d of babies. Hope everyone is healing and keeping food down now.
Neeroc says:
I’ll start this by saying I’m so sorry you’re both down and out. But it does make me laugh to think about nurse Annabel tending to the two of you. (and if that happens you totally have to make a video of it!).
Nine is a lot of stitches for that little finger, what the heck were you thinking leaving him alone for 2 minutes *g*
Feel better soon.
TamaraL says:
YOUCH! Our dog bit my husbad on the mouth and I got to watch him get stitched up. I actually enjoyed it, haha! How did Mike cut his finger? That is A LOT of stitches!
Heather says:
I forgot that part! He dropped a glass bowl over our sink, tried to catch it, and it broke and sliced his finger.
Lisa says:
My goodness you guys. Heather, I hope you are feeling better soon, stomach/barfing stuff sucks so bad. Hopefully you are over the barfing and painful stomach bit soon so you can start recovering. Mike, I’ve had stitches in my finger before, I feel your pain. Hope the cut heals quickly and well.
No more illnesses or injuries for a while okay guys!
Rebecca says:
Must be in the air! I spent Thursday night in the ER with my 3 year old and two other kids. My 3 year old nearly ripped off his left pinky at the park. After lots of xrays, 13 stitches on the outside and many on the inside, he has a Frankenstein finger. We’re not sure if his nail will be growing back. I am not looking forward to having to care for it once the doctors decide it’s my turn. I’m slightly squeamish.
Hope you’re both doing better soon!
Megan says:
Oh my gosh! What a tough weekend for both of you! I would have been totally excited if I were Annabel, though. The ER is exciting. Especially in LA, I bet!
So what was the “crash” in the kitchen that led to Mike needing all these stitches?
Heather says:
whoops, I forgot that part! He dropped a glass bowl over our sink, tried to catch it, and it broke and sliced his finger to the bone!
Rumour Miller says:
That is quite the night life you have there! I hope you both feel better soon.
AmazingGreis says:
ERs are NO FUN! Hope Mike is feeling better. Hope you are feeling better.!
Kristin (MamaKK922) says:
Gastritis is the Worst, I deal with it. It sucks BAD. I have to take Phenegren on my worst vomiting days. And it knocks me out and makes me feel like a Zombie. I sure do hope yours passes soon I know how awful it is.
And poor Mike as well. Stitches are pretty awful as well.
Heather says:
I’ve been taking zofran and it’s helped the vomiting. Not the pain, though, booooooo.
M. says:
I’d have them check your gallbladder, too (I need a shirt that says Ask Me Why I’m Gallbladder-Obsessed, but hey)
Hope that Mike’s finger heals well, and quickly, also.
Jenn says:
I tell this to anyone who says they have heartburn on a consistent basis. As someone who has had no heartburn after gall bladder removal, it’s worth asking your doctor!
Brandy says:
I’m so sorry you’re sick and that Mike was hurt in the midst of it all. What exactly happened? Did he drop something and get cut or cut his finger and then the crash? I’m so nosy. I can’t help myself sometimes. I hope you feel better VERY soon and that his finger isn’t too painful, as I’m sure Annie doesn’t quite get that daddy has a major boo boo and to be very careful around it.
PS – I would LOVE pics of the stitches. Sorry, I am just sick like that.
Heather says:
whoops, I forgot that part! He dropped a glass bowl over our sink, tried to catch it, and it broke and sliced his finger.
Tara says:
Yikes Heather! Yes, please make sure they check your gallbladder. Did they do an ultrasound of your abdomen?! That is what happened to me about a month ago and I went to the ER too. Only I was able to tell them I knew I had gall stones so they immediately zeroed in on my gall bladder and assumed my pain was a gall bladder attack. Only an ultrasound revealed that my gall bladder was infected and they took it out the next morning.
I hope whatever it is, you heal quickly and Mike too. What an ordeal!
Heather says:
They did not do an ultrasound. I have another friend who is convinced it’s my gallbladder, too. I need to follow-up!
AngieM. says:
i kinda want to see the stitches…i know i’m gross like that.
also, hope you get better..poor thing!
xoxo
Heather says:
Next time I change his dressing I’ll ask him if I can take a picture!
Lynnette says:
Hope you guys both start feeling better soon. Sorry about the trip to the ER. What a night!
Cheryl says:
I had gastritis after a really nasty bought of food poisoning. They had to have me drink lidocaine mixes with an antacide. Took 3 times before it worked well enough. It did get me thru that hump of getting rid of the pain. Than I had to do the BRAT diet for days…..Maybe they could help you out that way….
Skye says:
How awful. Are you guys arguing over who has it worse? I totally would be! Hope you feel better soon!!!
Ashley says:
I’m so sorry to hear you’re sick!!!! Our house was hit with gastritis a couple of weeks ago and it SUCKED! My oldeest daughter who’s only 4 wound up with severe stomach pains for 10 days and didn’t eat for as long, she’s finally back to normal and I still feel bad for her.
Hopefully you’re feeling better soon and Mike’s finger heals too. I’m sure the scar will one day make for a dramatic and completely entertaining story.
Ninabi says:
In the years to come, this will be the stuff of family legend, to be told (after dinner, of course) in such a way that even you cannot believe you had the strength to drive your husband to the ER while barfing. With a toddler in tow.
I’m so sorry. Really really sorry. Throwing up is awful. Taking care of others while doing so means you barfed like a boss. Or a mom.
There should be a merit badge for this- Caring For Others While Puking.
I hope you feel better soon.
Kelly says:
You guys are falling apart! Yikes. Hope you are all feeling better soon.
mandy says:
I had the SAME symptoms you did. Started towards the end of pregnancy and progressed & by the time my Mady was 9 mths old the ‘attacks’ of pain & the rest of the junk were so bad, they FINALLY figured out it was my gallbladder! Had that sucker taken out ASAP! So much better now! feel better soon!
amourningmom says:
I was in the ER with one of our twins and she threw up twice in the waiting room. I know that everyone waiting (including me) wished that we had been brought back to a room.
I hope that you and Mike’s finger get better soon. Take care.
Sarah, The Crazy Baby Mama says:
the mark of good parenting is to make your kid feel safe (and happy!) during dire experiences. like “life is beautiful” minus the nazis.
hope you guys heal up soon.
mccgood says:
Oh I feel so bad for you I honestly did have a chuckle. I do have a question though if you and that means a general you are so sick and can’t keep anything down and at risk for dehydration wouldn’t you go to the ER then what do they do with you? Maybe they take you right away so you aren’t in the waiting room but hmm.
Heather says:
yes – you go into a separate waiting room, or they send you back right away. And you have to wear a mask. It’s not fun.
Libby says:
Oh, what a rotten day/evening. I hope you and Mike feel better soon!
Rebecca says:
Yikes! Poor you and Mike! Hopefully you’re all better really soon
amanda says:
This is an awful weekend update! I hope everyone is feeling better today, at least a little!
amy says:
UGH!! What a horrible, horrible day!
I agree, get a second opinion or scan on the gall bladder. Better safe…
monica says:
omg you poor thing! hope you are both on your way to recovery. And yes, I too would like to see the stitches =)

“He has to get his stitches removed in seven to ten days. The sight of nine stitches in his finger will plague me for seven to ten YEARS.” LOVE that. don’t love, though, that you’ve been so sick and your husband was in the er. i hope yall recover quickly. :]

Get thee some probiotic…STAT! I recommend Phillips Colon Health. It’s nothing short of AMAZING. Combined with the BRATTY (Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Tea, Toast & Yogurt) & you’ll be good as new in no time. Perhaps the next time Mike feels the need to fix you something to eat, he should consider take out, know?
Heather K. says:
Poor Mike having to get stitches in his finger, yuck!
I remember the time my hubby had to get 15 stitches in his leg. I was cooking dinner for a gathering of family & friends. He was in the basement finishing working on a project. Next thing I know, I hear him yell “AAAHHHHH!” He comes hobbling up the basement stairs with his hands & a towel wrapped around his lower left leg. Looks at me in the kitchen and says “I have a problem, meet me up in the bathroom.” He then hobbles upstairs & I notice a dripping blood trial as he goes. I get up to the bathroom & there he is with his leg in the bath tub, and blood is just running down his leg. It was so grossssss! I couldn’t even tell what exactly he had done. Once he ran some water over it and we got a look at it, we knew it was BAD!! We both looked at each other and knew we had to go to the ER. Thankfully we had friends & family over, so we could just leave the kids there with them, but sadly we had friends & family over and were just about to sit down to dinner with them. So we came back downstairs & said “Ok guys, Erik needs stitches in his leg, we’ve got to take him to the ER, so help yourselves to dinner & please feed & keep an eye on our kids.” On the way to the ER he tells me that he put a 2 inch spade drill bit into his leg (google search spade drill bit, it looks scary!), he was using the drill and the bit skipped off of the wood and into his leg…ugh! It was very interesting when the ER dr. heard the story, and said “a 2 inch spade bit, that’s a BIG bit!” You see when the bit hit his leg, it grabbed his skin & turned it round & round all the way to his bone. You could look into this big wound & see his bone. The dr. said “well lets see here, lets untwist this hunk of skin, try to put it back in place and see if there’s enough to cover the wound.” Ugh. 2 hours & 15 stitches later we were done and on the way back home to our friends & family. They had eaten dinner, washed all of the dishes, fed & bathed our kids and were waiting on us to have dessert. Now every time we have that same mix of friends and family over for dinner, we joke about ER trips & whether or not we’ll actually get to eat together! :o)
Hope you’re feeling better and that Mike’s finger heals quickly!
God bless you all!

Hope you both feel better!
Jillian Layton says:
SO when I was a wee little girl (9) I got my finger stuck in a scooter wheel. They stitched me up and told me to come back a week later to get the stitches out….when I came back they were all freaked out because I had totally bit all the stitches off my own finger. I also pulled the surgi-strips off my bowl resection scar…what can i say!? I have horrible anxiety and love to pick at things (I also chew my tounge/cheek!)
Ray says:
Awww! Get well soon, you two!
P.S. That photo of Annie is AWESOME! =D
