The Final Stretch

by Heather on December 23, 2009

in Binky, Doctor Schmoctor, Heather, pregnancy is...fun?, Rigby the Dog

Rigby had her follow up with the vet this last weekend. Mike had to take her. I could have gone but…OK. Confession time. Stitches COMPLETELY FREAK ME OUT. I have been known to avoid doctors and emergency rooms just so I don’t have to get stitches for my wounds. The mere IDEA of stitches makes me feel all squicky inside. You’re probably thinking, “but Heather, you’ve had a c-section, so surely you’ve had stitches.” NO. My former OB used glue. Some people think this is gross. I say NOTHING IS GROSSER THAN STITCHES. Except possibly staples. OMG I just threw up a little.

So Rigby had stitches in her belly from her surgery, and the vet needed to examine them and remove any that hadn’t dissolved. Luckily, all of them had dissolved but one, and the vet said that one was about to go. She said Rigby is healing wonderfully, thank goodness. She’s lost some weight on her new diet since that is ALL she’s eating right now. We might be able to slowly introduce the occasional treat back into her diet, but no more bones or human food. She’s acting like her normal self, which is great. But now she sits forlornly at Mike’s feet while he eats, praying for something to miss his mouth and hit the ground. Meanwhile, I could throw an entire plate of my diabetic food on the ground (believe me, I’ve thought about it) and she’d sniff it disdainfully. Whatever, Rigby.

Speaking of diabetic food, my body isn’t digging it. At first I cut out too many carbs (I am actually supposed to have a certain amount of carbs every day) so I wasn’t getting proper nutrition. So I introduced carbs back into my diet, and my blood sugar was too high. So today, Dr. Risky started me on an oral medication to help with my blood sugar called Glyburide. I have seriously lost count of how many medications I’ve been on during this pregnancy. I’ve also lost weight on my diabetic diet, but it doesn’t seem to be adversely effecting Binky’s growth. She is still gigantic, and so am I.

My stomach is 46 inches around, so only up about half an inch from a couple weeks ago, but my stomach is taller (if that makes sense) and all around large. Binky’s breech position has explained a lot of the discomfort I’ve been feeling. I don’t have the bladder pressure but my ribs are screeeeaaaaming. She loves to bang her little head into my rib cage, and I’m pretty sure she’s made it her goal to burrow under my ribs. It must be really comfortable there.

Dr. Risky, Mike, and I talked about possible C-Section dates today. I’m not at all convinced I’ll make it to even the earliest day discussed. I know this is more my mental block on going to term, and the fact that she’s already big. I’d like to be proven wrong, though. But just in case, I have my hospital bag packed.

OMG you’re gorgeous!! Look at that – all baby! Am so jealous of your baby belly =) I had baby belly, back, butt, thighs, arms… urgh

Home stretch sounds so good… I can’t wait to “meet” binky! Having said that, quite happy to wait until the possible C/S dates that you were given.

So happy that Rigby is doing so much better, hear you on the stitches (and don’t think your reaction is bizarre at all regardless of how many stitches you have had… You should see me with needles – and I give blood!).

So much love and hugs your way (and to Mike, Rigby and Binky). Hope your love for each other sustains you over the coming days, weeks, months, years, lifetime.

Heather, I’ve been reading from the shadows for a long time now and my prayers have gone with you throughout this pregnancy. My first c/s was also an emergency and I just had my second about 10 weeks ago. I HAVE to tell you that as weird as it sounds, a scheduled c/s is peaceful and pleasant. I enjoyed every minute of it. The surgery team was talking and encouraging. My prayers are with you and I hope that you and Mike will be able to really relish Binkie’s birth.

Wrote a comment and then someone called me (yes, at 3:45 in the morning), so, as a summary: love the belly, too bad about Rigby not getting treats but the most important thing is she is healthy and will get plenty of lubbin’. You’ve done great so far, Heather, we’re all rooting and praying for you, God willing it’ll be smooth sailing!

Binky has proven so far that she’s quite content doing whatever she pleases (ultrasound pics, breech position), so I’m thinking she might like a few more weeks to shake and bake. LOL :0)

Here’s wishing for a few more weeks for Binky to stay inside (even though we’re all anxious to ‘meet’ her) and love to you, Mike, and the now stitch-less Rigby.

I have a feeling that she is going to look just like her big sister Maddie. Of course she will be her own little person – but I can only imagine she will be just as beautiful.

You are gorgeous, Heather, and I pray every night that you make it one more day so that lil Bink is able to grow and grow! :-) Sending hugs!

Holy Smokes Lady, your hair is getting LONG!

Coupla things here- I totally know what you mean about your stomach being taller. Your Belly, for the record, looks ADORABLE. Like you swallowed a basketball or something similar. Two thumbs up. Also, because you’ve been smart and packed your hospital bag? You will not go into labor. If you want to be doubly sure, I’d have it accessible at all times including any time you get into the car, put it in the trunk. Or better yet, next to you so that your uterus can not be even the slightest bit mistaken. You Will. Not. Go. Into. Labor.

And here ends my bits of highly scientific wisdom to share.

I hope you and Mike have a peaceful Christmas this year. There are so many of us out in the interwebs sending you guys and Maddie, and Binky, AND RIGBY nothing but love and support. I’ll be thinking about you guys for sure.

Oh no wait! I just remembered something else I wanted to share! You’ll love this-

When I was pregnant with Lady she had her FOOT rammed under my ribs for I can’t even remember how long anymore, but it caused my ribs on that side to stick out a little. AND THEY STAYED LIKE THAT for a time after she was born. Ugh, I used to try to push her foot out and she’d stick it right back in. Kids. Good grief. So I FEEL YOU although a head to your ribs must be vastly more uncomfortable than a wee tiny foot. So, quit it Binky. Dood, seriously.

Ok, is all! Love and peaceful Christmas to you.

If I would not have seen the echo’s, I would tell you that it is twins inside… I wonder if echo’s still can decieve and hide a baby.
This might be a huge baby, and I could see why a big baby would make you and your family happy. If only Madeline would have been a bit bigger and stronger…
In Europe they sometimes turn breeched babies around in their mom’s belly, but I have no idea if they do that in the States. I had my pregnancies in the seventies so who knows what the difference is… I know that turning them around to put them head down ready for birth is a very unpleasant process for the mom, so I have no clue if they still do it or just go for a ceasarian… I am still sending good vibes for an OK kid for you and Mike and the rest of your family!

You look fabulous! And so does Binky!!!!

My tummy was measuring large with my son. As 32 weeks I measured 36 weeks, so we knew he was going to be a big boy. He was born at 33 weeks and he was 5 lbs 11 oz…in the 97th percentile for a 33 weeker!!!! They say that had I carried to term he would have been over 10 lb, so in a sense he did me a favour by coming early! Because he was a big boy, he came out pretty healthy and just needed to stay in the NICU for 4 weeks to grow and learn to suck.

Your 32 weeks now… and I’m pretty confident that you’re worrying unnecessarily (but naturally so) and that Binky will stay put at least for a few more weeks. But should she be too impatient, I’m sure she will do well as it looks like she might be a big girl too!!!

Wishing you all the best and thinking good thoughts daily to keep that little Binky in place.

At any rate, feel free to post more pics of Rigby. My doggy fever is at an all-time high. Ha ha!

They can use glue for c-sections? That’s amazing! I had 4 sections and got staples every time. Very weird. Looks totally painful, but I didn’t even know they were there. Even the removal wasn’t a big deal. (This coming from a class-A, #1, big-fat-crybaby…..so they really couldn’t have been too bad.)

Hang in there!! You look fantastic…even if you don’t feel it.

PS…breech sucks. Has baby kicked you in the cervix yet? Those are good times.

Just look at that beautiful belly!!! All of my babies came early. They were all in the “full term” range (actually, I went into labour with my youngest son at 35 wks, 6 days. As soon as midnight hit and I technically turned into 36 weeks preg, the nurse looked at me and said “Okay…thanks to midnight, you are now full term and b/c of that, you can have your baby in a birthing suite). My son was born 4 hours later…6’9 19.5 inches. He scored 10 + 10 on his apgar scores.

I was happy to go a little eariler for all of them and that is what I wish for you!!!! I hope you have a wonderful Christmas and enjoy your belly while it last!

My Best,

Just wanted to get your opinion. At my OB appointment yesterday my belly measured 30 weeks gestation (i was 31 weeks 6 days) he said not to be concerened but you know how it is after you’ve had a preemie. So i measured my belly all the way around when i got home (i do this every so often) and it was 2 inches bigger then 3 weeks ago. So that shows good growth right? Maybe the baby was just laying weird when he measured? It just seems weird that on u/s my daughter has been 75% for size but yet my tummy was measuring small yesterday….

My second one was breech and I remember those painful ribs. I also know about the crappy food thanks to GD. The doc that did my C-section used staples but they came out before I went home and then I had some weird tape on there for awhile. I vote for glue! ;)

Be well, Mama Spohr!

Thank you for the Rigby update–I’d been wondering how she was doing too–what can I say, you not only have adorable babies, you have an adorable doggy. :)

And, I’m right there with you on the staples–a few years ago my husband shattered his ankle, and he wanted me there for all the follow up stuff–having been through all things medical (I thought) I said sure—and felt WAYYYY too close to fainting when those staples had to come out–he’d been in a cast. I hadn’t really seen them…and suddenly here we all were…and the floor was getting suspiciously close to my head. At which time I decided sitting further away was a good idea.

So excited to hear Binky is doing well and hopefully you don’t get tired of hearing from all of us you don’t know but who do care and wait for every update–I kid you not–you’re the first website I visit every morning hoping all is well.

Big? You think that’s big? It may feel it but by the time I’d reached 34 weeks with both of mine I had a shelf at the top! Perfect for the cup of tea :-)
By the time I’d reached 40 weeks with number 2 I’d developed a box, not bump. It went straight out at 90 deg from my pelvis up in a large curve and back in at the top at 90 deg, with a ledge that was a perfect size to rest a small plate on.
Both babies were a nice 7 1/2 lb each (ish).
You’ve plenty of space left for that little girl and given she’s upside down she is probably determined to stay there for duration.

He couldn’t even really enjoy the Kaluah chocolate fondue for dessert. Diabetes “sucks donkey balls”, as my teen would say.

I took Glyburide too. :) A little bit at night since I couldn’t get my fasting under 100 (probably due to my excessive fatness LOL). I’m just at 5′ and by 32 weeks, I look like a belly with a head on top, so I feel you’re pain.

Oh, and I wish I’d continued the diabetic diet after pregnancy, as I lost weight during pregnancy too.

Congrats on the final stretch and here’s hoping you make the c/s date.

Heather, just gotta say you are so FUNNY! Wishing you get more happy days than sad ones. One year from now your world will be so different, and hopefully your diet! We’re all pulling for you and Binky and Mike and Rigby.
Catch you tomorrow!

What is the “diabetic diet?” I’ll google it if you don’t have a chance to elucidate. It sounds icky.

Wishing you, Mike, Binky, Rigby, and Maddie up in heaven a Merry Christmas!

I lost 10 in my last 5 weeks of pregnancy thanks to the diabetic diet. Although, I was also on bedrest (high BP, irritable uterus, and GD…pregnancy was SO FUN!), so some of that weight loss could have been due to muscle loss.

Your belly is cute!

Your belly is cute! I’m huge this time too, and the little man has his head happily mashed into my rib cage as I type this. I’ve got the same mental block about making it to term. I’m just hoping to make it to 2010. I can’t handle another “surprise” December baby…

Take care.

I am thinking of you constantly. You are almost there my friend. 34 weeks is just around the corner. Praying for that 2010 baby!

A few years ago, in the middle of winter, one of Dave’s fingers was so dry it cracked open and was bleeding and painful. He came home one day and said “Hon! I fixed it!”

He had sewn up his own finger, with a dirty needle and some random cotton he found.

Apparently I’m married to fucken Rambo.

Thinking of you heaps, as always. Your belly bump made me get a lump in my throat, it is THAT beautiful.

XOXOXOXOXOXO

Such a cute belly. ;o) And already 32 weeks in: I’m sure Binky will stay in there just a bit longer. Since she’s all comfy next to your ribcage and all. =D

Heather,
I totally agree on the stitches thing! EW! I’ve had 3 c-sections. My first one was closed with steri-strips….which are little strips of tape. Scary that my insides were being held in with stickers, but hey…better than stitches! My other 2 were closed with glue. Once again, better than stitches!

My last baby was born 6 weeks early. A 34 week baby is scary after having 2 term babies, although, NOTHING compared to the hell you’ve been through. He had some issues, but we were only in the NICU for 7 days. I had the betamethasone injections for his lung development at 32 weeks and I swear by them. Has Dr. Risky suggested these? The main, lasting issue was his inability to breastfeed. He never learned to latch on properly, no matter how hard I tried. I ended up pumping 8 times a day and bottle feeding him for 10 months.

I pray EVERYDAY for your family. I read your blog daily. As you know, you are loved and supported by SO many people who have never met you, and I think that you are an amazing woman.

May peace be with you and Mike during this first Christmas without your Maddie. Heaven has one amazing Angel.

You look great!!! And I am so happy to read that Rigby is ok. That’s totally hilarious about her not eating your food. Well, it’s not hilarious that you have to eat that food. That pretty much sucks. … My husband cut his hand really, really bad once and wouldn’t go for stitches either. He had to go to the ER though within 24 hours because his finger was so bad. By then they wouldn’t put stitches in, but he had to go back more than once for after-care. It was a mess. … Hope the new meds get your blood sugar regulated soon. At least you and Rigby have each other to commiserate with over your rations. (((Hugs)))

Too sleepy to read all the comments tonight. I wanted to say (someone may have covered it) Cook baby Cook! But more so, babies “drop” as you know, and your beautiful little one doesn’t look dropped at all. Praying for full term here for you. Love to see someone proven wrong. The nerd in me and all.

I’m the quiet reader-not-commenter type.

I also had an emergency c-section with my first (and only) child. It was scary as hell because the baby was in distress.

I’ve heard countless others speak highly of planned c-sections, though. Keep up the good work and we’ll meet Binky in a few more weeks!

Love,
The Midwest

My first son actually got his head stuck under my ribs at one point and he grew while there! I had a niggling ache under my ribs like when you run too much, but it got worse and worse until after about a month, I couldn’t even get up one morning and lay there crying with the pain. I hadn’t felt the baby move in a couple of days, either and was terrified something had happened to him. The midwife made a housecall and managed to work his oversized head back out from under my bones and he went bonkers, kicking and punching, thrilled to be free! So tell Binky to make sure she doesn’t wedge herself in there too tightly!

I had GD twice, most recently with the baby I had this September. I had to try Glyburide, but it plumetted my blood sugars, so I had to go to insulin:( No fun!

I have to admit to a little bit of envy. My 27 weeker was born due to PROM. I’m currently expecting again and there isn’t a single thing I can do. No meds, no shots. Nothing, nada. I am trying to convince my OB that the shots would help but insurance is an issue. Basically, since the PROM happened with unknown cause, how can you act to prevent? I am trying to be content with appointments every 3 weeks.

Woo hoo baby bump!! Poor Rigby- but at least she’s healthy & doesn’t have crazy stones in her bladder now. I hope that Binky stays put until the very end- how awesome would that be? We’re all praying for it to happen! :)
