Ready To Pop

by Heather on January 6, 2010

in Binky, Doctor Schmoctor, Heather, pregnancy is...fun?

I usually have my appointments with Dr. Risky in the mornings, but yesterday I couldn’t get an early appointment and had to settle for the afternoon. Morning appointments with Dr. Risky are wonderful, we’re in and out in under an hour. An afternoon appointment with an obstetrician is blocking off a giant chunk of your day, especially with a high risk doctor like mine. My doctor is wonderful, she gives everyone her full attention and gives them as much time as they need. Unfortunately, if your appointment is towards the end of the day, that means you’re not going to see the doctor for a while. Especially if she has some unscheduled deliveries. Which, duh, she’s an OB, of course they are unscheduled.

That whole paragraph took almost as long as today’s wait. Today’s wait was long! But worth it.

So as you all probably know by now, Binky is big. Just look at the belly:

34 weeks 2 days

Soon it’s going to take TWO yard sticks to measure that girth.

Last week my fundal height was measuring five centimeters ahead, so Dr. Risky wanted an ultrasound (and this week? Measuring six cm ahead! That’s full-term!) to make sure everything was OK.

The first thing we saw was Binky’s giant hair-covered noggin at the bottom of my uterus. So, not breech! I’d be more excited about this if she was a) going out the traditional way, and b) guaranteed to stay head-down. Unfortunately, this kid moves a LOT and I am 100% certain it is her head and not her little bottom that is slamming into my right ribs as I type this. She may have the head of a Spohr, but she’s got her mama’s butt and that means it’s padded. Badonkadonk!

Mike and I always hold our breath when the doctor measures the amniotic fluid levels. There’s no reason to think there won’t be enough – in fact, my large size indicated the opposite (which can also be a problem) – but Madeline had hardly any and we’ll never be able to get that out of our minds. Luckily, Binky has the perfect amount. We could even see her little chest rising and falling as she practiced her breathing movements.

Finally, Dr. Risky got to the information we really wanted to know – the weight estimate. Before she’d started the ultrasound, Dr Risky asked me how big I thought the baby was. I replied, “HUUUUUGE!” I wasn’t far off – Binky is measuring at five pounds 11 ounces. That places her in the 70th percentile for size. Some of this can be attributed to Mike’s size, he’s a full foot taller than me. My gestational diabetes could also play a factor, although it has been very well managed since I started taking oral medication for my blood sugar (and I’ve been losing weight since I was diagnosed).

It’s crazy to think she’s almost twice as big as Madeline when she was born (three pounds one ounce – and almost as big as Maddie was when she came home from the NICU (six pounds). Of course it’s all estimates, but the one thing I can’t forget is that the morning Maddie was born, one of my doctors estimated her weight at two pounds and she came out over three. Binky’s estimate could go the other way, but I have a feeling she’s even bigger than predicted. Doctors tend to underestimate the weight of a Spohrhead.

Also, in case you’re keeping score, it was a pants-on appointment! Woo!

Loving the tummy, yet sympathizing as I remember how uncomfortable I was at that point. As I didnt get to see just how big my giant belly could get, I am living vicariously through you and looking fortward to watchimg yours grow over the next few weeks!

They do tend to be wrong when guessing the weights of those babies. I think that they may have gotten better since my oldest was born. They guessed her at around 5lbs, and she was 9lbs 4oz, and 21 inches long. Holy cow! I was not prepared for that. It was almost 18 years ago, and before 3D and all that. So happy to hear that Binky is getting big, and healthy in there!

I just love the Binky Belly, you are looking great, Mama Spohr. Continue to take such good care of yourself. Sending you a big hug (its has to be big these days to fit around the Binky Belly!).

The day my 1st son was born (40 w, 1d), they gave me an u/s b/c I was looking ridiculously large and they said by u/s, he was around 9 1/2 lbs, but with a 2lb margin of error- so either he’d be 7 1/2 or 11 1/2??? That’s a pretty big swing of guess, luckily he was around that 9lb mark. But I found it interesting that the slightest degree of a centimeter or ounce mark [earlier in pregnancy] can raise flags or calm nerves- when u/s results are taken more as gospel. But at the end, we live with 2 lb margins, and the “exact science” goes out the window. Hm, fuzzy math if you ask me!
Such a great appointment, can’t wait to see pix of her Spohr head full of hair, being snuggled with her mom and dad.

I know you must feel almost afraid to take a breath but really- things look so good! Your baby is going to be coming soon and you will be astonished at how big she looks to you!
And she may well be larger than the doctor estimates. They told my daughter three weeks before she delivered that her baby was already near the 10-pound range and tried to scare her into a C-section. When he was actually born he was only 9 lbs. 4 oz. so I take those estimations with a grain of salt.
Binky is going to be perfect.

Hi There! First time commenter here. I read your blog everyday with my morning coffee. Ive been touched by your journey and am so excited for Binky to arrive.

I think the best part of having baby stuff is guessing the size. My first was supposed to be around 8lbs but came in 8 days late at 9.7. My second, a boy, was eight days early and was supposed to be around 9.13. He weighed in at 11lbs. The drs just give a best guess but I have found that its the mama’s that know best. I had a feeling my son was going to be huge and he was. He was supposed to be that way. He was 16lbs at his 6 week check up and now at 3 is the size of a five yr old.

Enjoy!!!! cant wait to see Binky.

I can’t believe how excited I am about your pregnancy, I don’t even get this excited for my good friends. It’s not that I’m not happy for them, but there’s just something about your personality/situation/strength that draws me into your blog and pregnancy. When I read your posts my eyes well up and all I want is for this family that I have never met to have a happy ending. I couldn’t be happier for ya’ll (I grew up in CA, but living in TX right now). . .just had to add that.

I know the whole VBAC thing is a touchy issue, but I was just curious as to why it never seemed to be an option. Is it because of all of the complications you’ve had?

And please, don’t think I’m being critical, because lord knows, as long as that baby gets out of there and is healthy (as she seems to [hugely!] be) then who cares how it happens. I was just interested in the process.

Reply

97 Heather January 6, 2010 at 1:12 pm

I can’t have a VBAC because my first c-section was an emergency classical. That’s a vertical cut on the uterus, and it ups the likelihood of uterine rupture. My doctor doesn’t ever recommend a VBAC in cases like mine – and that’s not taking my other complications into account!

Reply

98 Kona January 6, 2010 at 1:18 pm

Ah, gotcha. I don’t know much about c-sections, so I was curious. Thanks!

That’s OK Heather – - babies who come out of the vagina have “cone heads” when they are born because they have to slip through a smaller exit and their heads kind of smoosh up. C-section babies have beautiful, normal sized heads and are absolutely beautiful! :)

I have been reading for awhile now, i’ve just been lurking around, and never commented- for lack of knowing just what to say…
I am so happy for you and Mike and Binky. May she continue to grow and be healthy. (when guessing baby weight, I was told my son was almost 6 lbs at my last appointment, two days later he was born at a whopping 9 lb 11 oz.) Best wishes to you and your family.

I’ve given a couple hints about the way we’re leaning, but we won’t announce her name until we see her and we’re SURE that we want to use it!

The day I went into labor with my first, they gave me an ultrasound and from that ultrasound they estimated my daughter would be about 6 pounds.

All along my OB told me that my first would probably barely be 5 pounds and that it would be okay because I was so petite.

After about 23 hours of labor….she came out and weighed in at 8 pounds. I was shocked!

I’m so excited for you Heather!

Heather, that’s great news. For my son the Dr estimated that he’s be an 8 lb baby and he was 8 lbs 7 ozs. For my 2nd (my daughter) i didn’t gain weight the last month and lost a pound and she was 7lbs 12 1/2 ozs. So I’m thinking Binky will be about 6 lbs or more because your belly looks all baby! Can’t wait to hear all the stats and prayinig that the remainder of your pregnancy is all smooth. Sending you hugs XXX

Hi Heather,
Here’s my ultrasound/weight estimate story:

I had an ultrasound when my son was 2 weeks overdue to see why he wasn’t making an appearance. The ultrasound showed his weight at 8.5lbs. Doc said it could be a pound either way, and he was SURE the baby was only around 7.5 lbs. Three days later I gave birth to an 11.1 lb baby/toddler by c-section! I’m 5’3″ and usually weigh in at around 130 so you’d think they could tell the kid was big, huh?

I wish and pray for a happy, healthy Binky for you, Mike and sweet Maddy.

Don’t believe the weight estimates during the ultrasound. The day before my daughter was born, they estimated her at 8lbs. She turned out to be 10lbs 7oz. (and that’s without diabetes….and with natural labor!)

They say that everytime you have a child it comes out bigger than the previous. I sure hope not. I am currently cooking number 2, and I don’t want an 11 pounder!

Congratulations on the great news!
You look tiny though – you know like you’re going to have a perfectly normal size 7 to 8 pound baby when the time comes. Which honestly is so the way to go.

I wouldn’t be worried about having a 9+ pounder until people start assuming you’re having multiples. My son delivered on his due date was 10lbs 9oz and 23″ long (the extra length is really what made those last 2months uncomfortable). Everyone joked that I was going to have surprise twins and a good 6weeks out strangers would assume I was giving birth any second.
Good luck – and if Binky is going to be a huge baby at least you’re planning a C-section so no worries there. :)

Heather, your belly is beautiful! Well done Mama Spohr! You deserve a huge pat on the back. I am going to estimate 7 pounds 5 ounces for Binky, and 20 inches long. You’re all baby!

I’m so happy for all of you. Maddie helped with this creation, I just know she did! I’m happy Miss Binky is head-down also, though I guess it doesn’t really matter……except……

I watched a C-section about 3 years ago with a friend of mine who was a single mom. The baby was breech. They “folded” the legs into like a frog position and lifted the baby’s bottom out, then they folded the baby’s arms across the chest and delivered up to his head – it was a boy, and we could tell that right away, lol! Then they like tucked his head down onto his neck and lifted him out that way. I also witnessed a C-section about 8 years ago with another single mom friend who had a head-down baby, and the delivery seemed much easier. So, I hope that Binky stays head down.

God bless all of you. I’m so happy for you all.

a) i choked on my spit today (officially 35 weeks for me) when they told me my bug is 6 lbs 10 oz. already ???????? so don’t feel bad about binky’s size!!

b) don’t you love it when it’s pants on?? i totally stripped today thinking i’d need an internal and nope! then i was the lunatic with her pants down for no reason…

c) i love your belly! it’s adorable. and you’re carrying so much higher than me – which i think is always cuter. mine dropped weeks ago and is like RIGHT THERE. oof.

Oh My . You are rather ginormous. It’s gorgeous. I got huge with my second – she was nine and a half pounds!- and I had extra amniotic fluid ( long story that ended happily)- I looked like a planet. I am pretty sure my tummy had its own gravity field. Everyone assumed I was having, at the very least, twins. I remember being approached by a little boy while waddling through a store. The kid looked at me and asked ” What happened to you?” I told him I was having a baby. He said ” A BIG one!!!”. Somehow I refrained from sitting on him.
