Multipurpose

by Heather on December 30, 2009

in Binky, Doctor Schmoctor, Heather, pregnancy is...fun?

I had my weekly visit with Dr. Risky today. At 33 plus weeks, I was fully expecting a cervix check. My contractions have been well maintained with my latest prescription, but the ones that do sneak through have increased in intensity. Luckily, I escaped without any internal prodding. Victory! Dr. Risky was also pleased with the way the blood sugar medication I’ve been on for the last week has been working. I was afraid she was going to say I needed insulin because my morning blood sugar levels have been very low, but she didn’t. Double victory! My belly is still measuring ahead – my doctor doesn’t go by my stomach’s circumference since that can vary so wildly from woman to woman. Instead she goes by fundal height = the distance from the top of my pelvis to the top of my uterus. Usually the rule is however many weeks you are is how many centimeters your fundal height should be. So, I should be 33ish cm. Today I measured almost four centimeters bigger. So next week I get an ultrasound. Triple victory!

Thanks to gigantic Binky, my belly is getting in the way of everything. It’s huge and I am constantly bumping it into things. But, it’s useful, too. People get out of my way when they see me coming. I’m offered seats in waiting rooms. And of course, it is a built-in table. A month and a half ago I posted a picture of Rigby laying on my belly.

resting comfortably on my belly

She doesn’t like to climb on my belly as much anymore because Binky kicks her. But, every now and then I’ll still cruise around the house with her on her perch. She’s gotta enjoy it while she can.

Mike went out to dinner last night and I amused myself by balancing things on my belly. When Mike came home I told him, and he got excited to see what exactly could sit upon my built-in.

My diabetes testing supplies, for example;

My diabeetus testing supplies

or Mike’s Incredible Hulk doll;

Hulk Smash

I’m sorry, I’ve just been informed it’s a collectible action figure. My bad.

The remote control, of course. I have strict TV watching rules, you know.

Binky controls the remote

Mike was thrilled to discover he has a new place to leave his empty Diet Coke cans:

Mike's favorite drink

Unfortunately, there is plenty of room for sugar free snacks.

But luckily, there is also room for the original Spohrhead.

I’m pretty fond of the belly…I might even miss it when it’s gone!

    When I was in college I did a speech on how to properly watch tv. I had a lot of the same stuff you did. But also added to put glasses on and contacts out b/c you don’t want to miss a pivotal moment by having a contact fall out. To have all snacks handy, to go to the bathroom before the show starts, to not bug me, ask questions, etc. I got an A+ and cracked people up. Especially when I said to get comfy by putting pjs on, and they didn’t know that under my overalls I was dressed in my pjs, so I dropped the overalls, everyone gasped, and I stepped out from behind the podium and showed them my pjs. It was awesome.

    And your belly is awesome too!!

    There’s an advert in England for a sweet called Maltesers. I dont know if you have them there but they are chocolate covered honeycomb balls (yummy). The advert shows a very pregnant woman and partner (assumed!) playing with the bump – the maltesers are sat on the top of the bump and they get fired off by well aimed kicks. I think you and Binky need to do some training!

    I used to use my belly as a bookrest when I was laying in bed reading! They’re definitely handy, though in another month you’ll be finding it harder to do stuff than you are now. :) But it’s great! I’m glad you’re enjoying your belly so much and glad that Binky is hanging out longer to let you enjoy it.

    As a fellow preemie mom (to a 28 weeker) I share so much excitement and joy for you as I see your belly growing and as you get closer and closer to your due date. You have done an amazing job at growing Binky and that beautiful belly. Missing out on the last few months of pregnancy is something I think about often. I am so glad you are getting your big belly experience and I wish you many more (7 to be exact!) weeks of practicing your newfound balancing skills!

    This is great Heather. I love the big belly that I can put things on, it makes me so happy ;)
    I measured 7 cm ahead with Seth from 20 weeks until 36 weeks at which point I jumped to 10 cm ahead!
    If she is still breech that would also explain why you’re measuring bigger….that and the placenta in the front!
    I just love you and am so happy to see you and Mike having fun, even if it is just for a minute.

    WOW, you look fabulous… I don’t think I looked that well so late in preg!! Very cute pic of Mike’s head on the belly. I don’t think you’ll miss the belly- the inhabitant to hold will more than make up for the belly’s shrinkage. The storage space- likely another story. When you get to 37 weeks full term, does Dr Risky get to take you off all restrictions and meds and just let whatever happen happen (ie, if you go into full labor,will just let you progress) or is the goal really not to come off meds until week 40? Getting so close, either way!! Hope you’re stocking up on the baby diapers and wipes and other supplies…

    She’s evaluating me week to week, so I probably won’t know when she’ll take me off all the medications/restrictions until she does it! I have a feeling it will be around 36 weeks, but I know there are a LOT of factors to consider. I have to have a c-section so she doesn’t really want me to go into labor, but I don’t think she wants to keep me medicated to the gills for so long, either!

    You don’t know who I am but I thought of you at work the other day. I was the triage nurse in the ER and a woman came to my window and said “I’m pregnant and my water broke”. GREAT! I thought, then asked her how many weeks along she was. 26 was her answer. Then she started to cry. I wish you were there with me at that moment.

    Your belly reminds me so much of mine at thirty three weeks. I was also measuring 4 weeks ahead up until I had my son at 33 weeks. I am guessing that your binky is going to be a BIG girl, just like my son was (5 lb 11 oz) or should have been (over 10 lbs if I had carried him full term). You will be grateful for having a c-section!!!!

I look forward to sitting on the couch, resting my drink (I can PRETEND it’s a soda!) and my remote on the shelf that is my stomach! Unfortunately, I find myself using my chest already as a shelf for my soda when my arm is tired.
