Jersey Spohr

by Heather on February 4, 2010

in Doctor Schmoctor, no one's in the hospital, the amazing Annabel

Thanks to everyone for their advice about jaundice. Madeline also was jaundiced, but since she was already in the NICU it was just one aspect to her treatment. We very much wanted to avoid any sort of hospital stay (we just do not need to deal with that kind of emotional trauma), not to mention any possible side effects the jaundice could inflict on little Annabel. She was already very lethargic, and that is why we opted to follow our medical team’s advice and give her formula for 24 hours. Mike and I absolutely researched both sides of it, believe me – we don’t make any decisions lightly when it comes to our children. The good news is that Annie’s bilirubin numbers dropped to 12.1 and she is officially back to breast feeding like a champ. And, now I have a nice little stash of milk frozen for any sort of emergency. Win!

I’m definitely happy that Annie’s bilirubin levels went down because her yellow skin tone was starting to make her act a little strange. Earlier today, for example, Mike turned the TV to an episode of MTV’s “Jersey Shore,” and Annie immediately locked her gaze on the screen. Mike and I joked that it must have been because she felt a connection to all the orange-skinned, overly tan guidos and guidettes on screen, then left the episode on as we went about our day. This was a mistake. Check out how I found her only a couple hours later:

gym

I immediately took the weights away from Annie, I mean those things could really hurt a newborn! But she wasn’t done acting out. Not ten minutes later Mike found her like this:

tan

Okay, so Annie’s tanning in indirect sunlight was actually a good thing considering her bilirubin levels, but where the heck did she get those sunglasses? Mike took the glasses away and told her she was too young for them (they were totally for 3-6 month olds (but of course they fit her giant Spohr Head)) and that she shouldn’t try to grow up so fast. Annie seemed to get what Mike was saying, but then, five minutes later, we found her like this:

laundry

What baby does their own laundry? Mike and I weren’t sure why Annie was acting so strange until it hit us… GTL! Gym, tan, laundry! Annie was only doing what ‘The Situation” taught her to do on “Jersey Shore!” Wow. I guess kids really shouldn’t watch TV. And those Jersey Shore people? Totally not role models. Thankfully, once we learned from Dr. Looove that Annie’s bilirubin number went down, Annie was less interested in imitating Snooki and the gang. Still, it’s cartoons only from here on out…although, I wouldn’t mind if she kept doing her own laundry.

Hahahahahahaha that is hilarious. I love your sense of humor and ability to convey it into the written word. The pics are so funny. Very creative. Annabel is going to have a life full of laughter, and what more could she ask for? Laughter is medicine for the soul, as you both obviously know. I love reading your blog. You are a great writer, and thanks for the laughter along with your inspirational
way of dealing with adversity, along with appreciating the good that can come after the storms subside.

How do these little people generate enough laundry for three? :) is It because we love to play dress up with them while they are totally compliant and we know the future holds a bit of discourse? Nah. It’s because they’re little grubbettes who eat, sleep, and soil all garments at least twice a day or more!!
Sigh…Baby Laundry Scent is the bomb!!

Also, you do what you need to do when it comes to your children’s health. I learned that when mine were in two different hospitals two hours apart. Our doctors had asked us to supplement with premie formula. Then, a breastfeeding consultant at the NICU told me I didn’t have to do that, that my breast milk would be enough – and, as an afterthought, said “I mean, I don’t want to tell you to ignore your doctors …”

Laughing out loud. I have been following your blog since you lost dear Maddie & have left a few comments along the way, but have to let you know, I actually grew up right by Seaside Heights and worked on the boardwalk. I can’t believe my old ‘hood has become so infamous. Her tan would absolutely fit in!

On a more serious note I wanted to write yesterday and thank you for a wonderful moment that you gave me. I have written before about how your story has made me not take for granted a minute with my own daughter who was born 2 years ago. Yesterday, I went to work late so that I could have breakfast with her (something I probably wouldn’t have ever done if you didn’t remind me all the time how precious every moment is). We were at our local cafe (I have escaped the shore and now live in Boston) and were about to leave. My daughter was pulling the usual 2 year old attitude when the song “Here comes the sun came on.” She suddenly calmned down and the two of us sat there in complete silence for the entire song. I cried tears of saddness for Madeline and my own mom who I lost before my daughter was born and I cried tears of joy for my little girl and your Annabel. The whole time I was so grateful that you have shared your story and made me stop to take those precious little times with my girl. I am wishing you so much joy with Annabel. You and Mike have known 10 lifetimes of sorrow and now I hope the universe gives you 1000 lifetimes of joy thought I know how much you will always miss your Maddie.

Thank you Heather and MIke

We went through that too and Kalie had to have a couple bottles of formula, but she went right back to nursing so much that she earned her nickname of “The Boobymonster” She would come at me with this sort of wiggle and growl… Having a little stash of milk is a huge bonus so win win for everybody! You are too funny, I love the pictures of what Annie has been up to lately.. No more tv young lady! (And they probably already told you this but a walk in the sun or keeping your shades open will help the jaundice to go away too.) If it’s sunny there… not so much here! AWWWW!!! She is SO cute! All three of my babies had jaundice pretty bad (rh incompatibility–my ex-husband and I didn’t even get along on a CELLULAR level, sigh…) and she is doing FANTASTIC! My oldest’s bili was twenty-freaking-one when he was readmitted for phototherapy (and the doctor only tested him after I pitched a FIT over how yellow the baby was looking…I shudder to think how that might’ve played out if I hadn’t)…the middle and youngest never got so high because we were on top of things…I love Annie’s little yellow nose. That’s about the last place it clears up from (if you press the tip of their nose like you’re checking the cap-refill time, the level of yellow when it blanches is a good gauge of how their bili level is doing–by my last baby I could call the number within a few points, hahaha) aside from the whites of the eyes. I’m so glad to hear the 24-hour formula thing worked and that Annie is back to the boob!

Also I hope it’s okay to say this, but I missed reading “baby tricks” posts from you. This post reminds me of Maddie’s Matt Lauer crush…that was so funny. It’s good to see mama at play again :) Annie has a big spot to share with her big sister in so many of our hearts…

Oh, such joy to hear you having such normal baby concerns and talking about it all with such a sense of humor. The concept of brining a healthy baby home from the hospital right after it’s born still seems so odd to me and I’m thrilled you get to experience that. Which of course, does not, in any way, as you and I well know, take away any of the poignancy and sadness of Annie not having her spectacular big sister to guide her. But the relative “normalcy” you’re experiencing right now seems like heaven on earth!

P.S. I watched a few episodes of “Jersey Shore” recently just to see what the fuss was and was completely horrified. But I’ve started calling Charlie “C-WOWW” and how can you possibly avoid calling your husband Mike “The Situation” from now on?

Your baby is beautiful but as a lifelong resident of New Jersey I take exception to the reference to your Guidos and Guidetter comment. I know they use those terms on the show but repeating them is a form of discrimination against Italian-Americans. I happen to be of Scottish descent but many people I grew up with (at the Jersey Shore) were from Italian backgrounds and they were nothing like the people depicted on that show. I’m sure you’d never call someone a JAP because you know better. Don’t be so foolish as to imagine that the Jersey Shore is full of over-tanned, hair-gelled lunks. TV is not reality. It’s entertainment. In this case, it’s spiteful. racist entertainment.

Oh I can hardly stand the CUTE! Loved this entry, what an advanced little one she is ;o) She is just adorable.
Can you send her my way to teach my boys how to do the laundry? It would make my life ten times easier!

Heather-

It is so good to “see you” laughing. My daughter was cracking up at the photos. She’s 6 and she thinks she knows why this is funny. Yeah, no need for her to know about “GTL.” Thanks for the good laugh. My daughter was so happy to see Maddie’s baby sister.

Love-
Heidi
