Ever since my mom went along to my twenty week ultrasound, she’d been itching to see Binky again. She remembered when we’d gone to the fancy ultrasound place how they gave a discount for return trips. They told us the optimal time to get pictures of Binky was 32 weeks. Mike and I looked ahead on the calendar and saw that I’d be 32 weeks pregnant the week of Christmas. Easy Christmas present! WOO!
So, yesterday Mike and I met my mom, dad, aunt, brother, and cousin at the ultrasound place. We were excited to get another look at Binky. I couldn’t wait to see how she’d grown and changed since the last time we’d seen her in 4D.
Once I was settled on the table, the ultrasound tech put the wand down on my lower abdomen…and we discovered that Binky is breech. So what should have been a fantastic shot of her head and face instead confirmed 100% that she’s a girl.
Binky…just didn’t want to behave. She had her legs and hands in front of her face almost the entire time. The ultrasound tech had me rolling from my back to my left side to my right side and back again. She’d also poke and massage my belly to attempt to get Binky to move, but the baby was just. not. having it. The other problem is I have an anterior placenta, meaning it’s in the front instead of back. It must be super cozy and smell like chocolate or something because Binky refused to move her face from it. This frustrated the tech because the placenta distorted the pictures of Binky’s little face. The tech suggested we reschedule but we were happy with the result – we didn’t expect perfection, it’s an ultrasound.

The actual ultrasound was pretty cool, and we got the whole thing on a DVD so at some point I’ll have to upload clips. Throughout the course of the 30 minute appointment, we got some amazing looks at Binky – much better than the still photos suggest. The tech pointed out that she already has hair (YAY!), and we saw her give the camera some LOOKS, like, GET OUT OF MY FACE PEOPLE! We all saw similarities between Binky and Maddie – they appear to have the same nose and rosebud lips.
I can’t wait to see the real thing in just a few more weeks.

wowsie… I clearly see the similarities with Madeline in the second photograph… How neat that you can do all this now… Way back in my prehistoric days of pregnancy, all you saw was black shadows and with a lot of imagination you could make up a baby… Not so now. ha! back in my day, missy, they listened with a stethescope and pushed & prodded your belly! (internally too) and in the end, you got what you got with no advance notice!
(the difference between my 1980′s pregnancies my 2000′s pregnancy was truly amazing. I mean, I knew about the knowing the gender in advance b/c of ultrasound thing, but I didn’t know about the not needing an internal exam and a finger prick blood test every single time you went to the doctor. that part was gold! You young things can’t truly appreciate!)
My mom had ultrasounds during her 1970s pregnancy with me – that’s how she found out she was having twins.
Ugh. I have had my fair share of internals (four this month already, lucky me), and I have to prick my finger four times a day! I am so totally 80s.
They were rarely used until the mid to late 80′s. The docs had to have a strong suspicion of something needing to be seen. I remember reading that they were not sure if hearing might be damaged in the long run, not to mention the expense.
I guess the realization that kids your mom’s age were showing no problems, plus the cheaper technology trend coincided nicely. Ultrasound quickly went from something you had to be specially recommended to be done at big regional hospitals (1986, my previous last pregnancy) to something every hospital or really big practice had, to my doctors (kaiser) having little machines with bad screens in the examining room (2006, my actual last pregnancy)/being available commercially.
I’m just glad Binky is still safely in there getting her picture taken.
Oh my gosh, she kind of looks like Maddie from what little can be seen! I am just so glad that she’s staying put and I see her refusal to budge as a very good thing.
Is it just my imagination or is that little bump on her head a tiny little curl? I loved Maddie’s curly hair.
Technology never ceases to amaze me.
She is absolutely gorgeous. You do an amazing job making babies.

That is super cool. Had to laugh at the first pic, although I hope she doesn’t decide to *stay* breech! My first ultrasound might as well have been a satellite weather photo, I was astounded when the sonographer pointed out “features”. By my second baby they had upgraded the machines and I was really happy to be able to count the fingers, but it looked nothing like the photos you have there. Amazing. And Merry Christmas to Grandma!

That is wonderful! I had a 3d/4d with my 2nd daughter and was amazed how much you could see! After having a bald 1st daughter, it was fantastic to see hair waving around in there! The ultrasound looked so much like the real thing when she arrived too!

yep, I knew I had to have a c-section before I became pregnant with Binky. Madeline’s c-section was a crash, so my uterus was cut in a way that makes traditional delivery too risky.

My sister had one of these ultrasounds done like 5 days before her son was born. It was so crazy to see him and look so much like that picture. My ultrasound pictures on the other hand look like big glob masses. But we loved them anyway

We had the 3D/4D ultrasound twice, and every time my little monkey hid his face. The tech had me drink juice to get him to move around- which he did: he turned his tushie to the camera!! I tried flipping over, jumping up and down, you name it. We got a tiny little peak, but he was not budging. Just like your little angel in there, he was a little stinker and didn’t want us to completely see our gift before opening it!
Binky is just going to make her Mommy wait until Valentine’s Day to see her in all her glory!!!

YES! I measured 46 cm. at 36 weeks with Seth. I was HUGE! he was also 9lbs. 3oz when he was born at 38 weeks…but the placenta was also HUGE. It will be interesting to see how big your placenta is with Binky. Make sure you ask your doc to let you know how big it is…inquiring minds want to know
