Redeeming Vices

just for the taste of it

A lot of you noticed the Diet Coke can collection in my last post. To answer your questions, YES, Mike drank all of those himself. Not a single one of those cans belonged to me. And that’s not all he drank that day! He’s always consumed too much Diet Coke (in his mom’s opinion) and it’s something I’ve been around forever – my parents used to be big D.C. drinkers in their day. Annabel doesn’t even flinch at the sound of a coke can opening (neither did Madeline). I think they got used to it in utero. I’ve grown accustomed to hearing the unmistakable sound of a soda can popping open at the start of each day.

He can’t function without Diet Coke, and he will actually drink a can and then go to bed. It baffles me.

I used to drink a lot of Diet Coke but I stopped a year ago. I still drink a cup of coffee every day, but that’s it. I know, it’s hard to believe after I admitted how hopelessly addicted I was.

My vices go in phases. When I was in high school I went through this kick where I only ate bread rolls at lunch (plain. Yes, weird, I know.). Off and on I have to drink raspberry iced tea (made from a mix). I’ll get stuck on a certain food (like tacos from Baja Fresh, mmmm) and then that’s all I want to eat for weeks. When I was pregnant, my cravings were crazy – avocados, chop suey, latkes, pie, and cheese, to name a few – but after I’d eat them for a few days I was over them (except for pie, because it is impossible to be over pie).

With Annie here I am still managing to keep to one coffee most days. I am being careful about what I eat since she is eating it too. The one thing I am indulging in like crazy? Apple juice. I have a low-sugar variety that I chug all day. I have to stay really hydrated and after a while, apple juice is the only thing I can stomach. I get tired of plain old water! So I’m looking for suggestions for tasty healthy drinks.

Oh, and my current addiction? Pretzel crisps and garlic hummus. Poor Annabel, she is constantly getting kissed by the garlic monster.

Well, she’s getting the garlic too, remember – she eats what you eat. So she probably doesn’t notice! My eldest only ever wants bread and butter for school lunch – she eats fruit with it, but doesn’t want anything in the sandwich. So I don’t think your high school lunches were weird, at all :-)

Have you tried the flavor mix-ins for water? Usually low in sugar and they really taste good. Maybe green tea with mint? Not too high in caffine at all. Also try out Simply juices (apple, orange, lemonade) they are yum. :-)

My husband and I have been addicted to the single packets of sugar-free crystal light etc. Now that we’re watching our budget, I’ve changed.

I keep fresh lemons & limes in my fridge, and squeeze fresh juice into my water. It’s great, refreshing, cheap and healthy!

WIth my son, I kept it to half a can of mt dew a day. once he was born, i kinda went off the addiction kick. then I got pregnant. i decided one can a day wasn’t so bad, less caffeine than a coffee right? when she was born, i sometimes snuck a second one… and now i’m stuck in a two a day habit.
actually, i can go a day or two without it if I consciously try, without withdrawal headaches, but i just CRAVE the stuff. CANT STOP!

Anyhow, healthy drinks – milk always. If you aren’t in the mood for milk, I find that a cookie or two, or a brownie, usually gets me there. Of course, that may defeat your purpose… haha!

Speaking of milk, and the six month old, time to go!

I get bored with water too. So nomally i drink 1/3 juice with 2/3 water or even more water. During the summer I always put a slice of lemon in my water (and we drink sparkling water here in Germany). You could just mix more water to your juice, you will get used to that quick. I cant even stand pure juice anymore, its too sweet for me!!

I do this, too! And I love sparkling water. Sparkling or flat, my ratio is about 85-90% water, the rest apple juice (cranberry juice and other options also work). It is very refreshing, with just the right touch of flavor. I alternate between a glass of water and a glass of this blend. I also find pure juice too sweet now, with the bonus that my sweet tooth has decreased overall. Enjoy your sweet Annie, though!

Just thirding this idea! My toddler and I both struggle with staying hydrated on water alone, so { add just a touch of natural juice (v8 fusions are great for this!) to a cup of water and viola! Tasty enough for us to keep drinking it, but with no artificial sweetener.

I have sparkling water with slices of lime in. Over here ‘down under’ if you are sober driver, you drink lemon, lime and bitters. Lemonade, dash of lime cordial and angustora bitters. Literally everyone drinks it! I’d never heard of it before, it grows on you, but I don’t drink sugared drinks normally so if I have 2 or 3 I’m bouncing off the walls. Imagine if I had caffeine? Heck.
There are some really nice cordials from bottle green, I love the elderflower one, really nice in fizzy water, but good in chilled from the fridge water too. They’re really concentrated, so you only need a dot of them in your drink.
Other than that, I drink gallons of green tea, I make 2 mugs at a time, I’d make it in a bucket if I could! :)

well, since i’m diabetic i cannot drink many things like juices which i adored before. so, i drink filter coffee with vanilla flavour which you can make light and still tasting good if you put a spoon of coffee for every cup of water in your coffee machine. when you want a cold coffee you can make what we call cappucino freddo. make a dose of espresso coffee, put it with lot of ice cubes in a big glass and add very well stirred (like a cream) fresh milk. then on the top you can rinse some cinnamon or chocolate powder. it’s yummie and not so strong because of the milk

I go through random food/drink addictions too! For a while it was Diet V8 Splash… um, yeah. I also had a wicked Diet Coke addiction myself and am proud to say I gave it up at New Year. My replacement and current addiction is sparkling water with slices of lemon. I cut up a bunch of lemons and keep them in the fridge so they are ready to pop in a glass whenever I want one. I go through about 10 liters of sparkling water a week… so no fancy San Pelegrino because we’d be broke–we get the cheap stuff, but I can’t tell too much of a difference!

Here in Germany I found out that cold milk is bad for the baby. Warm milk is fine though. Why – I have no idea.

Also, no citrus for the nursing mom – or peppers for that matter – because the baby gets diaper rash from anything with vitamin C in it. I’ve tried this one myself and it’s true. Ooops!

Garlic is not good for the baby either. It’s not just the taste. I don’t really know why.

Herbal teas are not great either, most of them. Exception being fennel tea, which is actually good for my daughter’s belly (she was much happier on the days I drank it than on the days I didn’t, especially when she was just a few weeks old.) Also, it helps with the milk supply and it has a nice taste.

So I’m alternating between tap water and mineral bubble water for the last 6 months since I’m nursing, plus one cup of coffee and one cup of fennel tea. Boring, I know. It beats having a gassy baby or treating diaper rash though.

Oh, and tell Mike that Diet Coke is really bad for him (it increases significantly the risk for esophageal, pancreatic and colon cancer, ruins your teeth and contributes significantly to weight gain, to name just a few effects), and the cans are very bad for the environment (the production of aluminium is one of the most polluting industries.) I used to drink a lot of this stuff too, but I quit (and feel much better, actually.)

Oooh – I can really relate to this post! I love Diet Coke as well, and drink WAY TOO MUCH of it. I have 3 kids, and with the 1st I completely cut out DC before I conceived and while pg. Then I drank one can a day or less when I was nursing her. Then oops! pregnant again with #2 when #1 was 8 months old! I was a tad freaked out and tired, so I kept my diet coke habit going this time, one every other day or so. By the time I was pg with baby #3 I was drinking at least one a day (and now that she is 2 1/2 and I’m not nursing anymore, I drink 3 a day. Yikes). I figure as vices go, it could be worse! The worse part is I have now ALSO started drinking coffee! It started when my husband and I were in France last summer and the diet coke was super expensive and kind of weird tasting, so I drank coffee or espresso to avoid caffiene headaches. So now I drink 1-2 cups of coffee a day plus 3 diet cokes. Uffda.

Don’t let everyone freak Mike out about aspartame. A recent article:

“Some people remain suspicious of all artificial sweeteners, even though extensive research has not found any significant health concerns.

Aspartame, sold under the brand names Equal and NutraSweet, is one of the most tested substances ever allowed in our food supply. It’s also approved for use in more than 100 other countries.

There’s no reason to believe any of the “warnings” flying around the Internet that claim aspartame causes Alzheimer’s, Multiple Sclerosis, brain damage, or any other serious disease. And the latest research shows there’s no need to be concerned about cancer.”

    Adrianne Reply:

Well it sure as hell isn’t good for you, so that’s enough for me to avoid it where I can. There are certainly worse things than Diet Coke, and I can’t stand it when people get onto people’s blogs and rant about what they should or shouldn’t do (this is my first comment on this post). But I’ve been on a huge “all the crap we eat in this country is horrible for you” kick lately, so it just makes me sad to see all of the people talking about drinking 3+ Diet Cokes a day! The “western” diet is seriously killing us.

As far as suggestions go, I’m not much help. I’m rarely thirsty (and not nursing), so when I am, it’s just cold water usually. Maybe some flavored tea or regular iced tea (decaf) would be an option? I also second the idea of getting a juicer. You could blend up all sorts of fun combos!

    Anna Reply:

Oh, I’m not saying it’s “healthy.” But everyone has their vices, and that’s okay. And while there are some vices that are legitimately damaging to your health, diet coke isn’t one of them. I personally think that sugar is more unhealthy than aspartame, but that’s neither here nor there. Everyone’s allowed to have their vices without a chorus of BUT DON’T YOU REALIZE!?! And just because aspartame is a chemical doesn’t mean it’s bad for you. And just because fruit juice is natural doesn’t mean it’s great for you either. But as long as we don’t smoke and wear our seatbelts, we’re statistically as good as we can get.

    Adrianne Reply:

Well I totally disagree that Diet Coke isn’t damaging to your health. I mean one here and there probably won’t do much, but drinking several a day is absolutely damaging to your health. As for the rest of what you said, meh. I have a differing opinion, but it doesn’t matter:) You’re right that everyone has their vices, and even though I’d like to be perfect in the health department, I’m far from it. So I’ll just shup up now;)

BTW, a Diet Coke before bed helps me sleep. Really. So Mike’s not all that weird, in that regard :-)

I am one of the few people I know who doesn’t drink coffee, or anything caffeinated for that matter, but I am a total juiceholic. When I was pregnant with Maya and then after while I was nursing I would mix Diet Sprite with cranberry (or cranapple or cranraspberry). It tasted great and cut down on the calories of the juice a bit since it wasn’t a full glass. I did about 2/3 sprite and 1/3 juice.

Also, those low cal mixes you can put in water are pretty good too. I think the even have a raspberry iced tea one :)

    Love and hugs.

I too was a diet soda addict, but after nursing my now 3 year old daugther & 18 month old son both until they were 15 months old, I had to find an alternative. I still have 1 Diet Sunkist or Diet Coke each day – mostly out of habit. My new addiction is Sam’s Choice (the Wal-Mart brand) 68 cent/liter Sparkling Water. It gives you the fizzy feeling in lots of yummy flavors – my personal faves are Wild Cherry & Mandarin Orange. After that’s gone, I fill up the bottle with water & mix in a couple of Ocean Spray White Cran Peach drink mixes which are heavenly. I had always enjoyed Crystal Light, but these things rock. Another surprising find, also again at WalMart is their house brand Sugar Free Cherry Limeade drink mix. The Ocean Spray one only comes in singles, but the WM varieties come in larger containers as well. Best combo yet is 1 pk. White Cran Peach/1 pk. Cherry Limeade in the liter bottle – YUM!

We were just on vacation, and the hotel had a couple giant containers of ice water in the lobby. One had strawberries, pineapple, and other tropical fruit floating in it, and the other had lemon, lime, and orange slices. Diet Coke is GOOD!

Some yummy drinks…. lemonade you make yourself. So easy and way better for you than the powder junk.
Recharge (RW Knudsen) is great. It’s a super healthy version of Gatorade with real fruit juice.
Sparkling Water with lemon or lime flavor. I love Arrowhead for that.
Juicy Juice is actually pretty yummy and it doesn’t have any high fructose corn syrup.

Ooh, I haven’t read through the posts, so I may be repeating what’s been said before.

I don’t know if the crystal light/water flavorings are a good idea. I know they’re TERRIBLE for you if you have a sensitive stomach (which I do). My doctor said that they were contributing to my (ahem) loose stools and heartburn (he said that one or two a day is fine, but NEVER if you’re not feeling well) and I’m not sure how that would translate to Annie’s tummy.

I second the juice/water idea, though. I can’t drink regular juice anymore – it’s too sweet for me.

Also, one thing that I learned in Korea and that I absolutely LOVE is to make roasted Barley Tea. It tastes sooo good, and it’s great warm or cold. They just boil water with roasted barley, toss the barley out and keep the water. (I think this started because they needed to boil water to sanitize it, and this added flavor as well)
If that sounds interesting, just look up Barley Tea or Bori Cha (Korean pronunciation) for a recipe.

p.s. pretzel chips with garlic hummus sounds heavenly.

If I can’t force myself to drink any more water, I usually switch over to iced white tea or green tea. Not nearly as much caffeine as black tea (and you can find some decaf varieties, too), and I can’t imagine the antioxidants would be bad for Annie! Some of my favorites are Stash teas (I haven’t found a variety I didn’t like, but my favorites are the green chai and white chai), Celestial Seasonings Decaf Mint Green Tea, and any of the Be Well red teas from Republic of Tea (Get Gorgeous is a fave). All of these varieties are great either hot or iced, and need very little sugar/honey. :)

The only way I can down a bunch of water is with a shot of lemon in it. But I’m a CocaCola Classic addict and when my midwife told me I had to stick to 1 caffeinated beverage per day during this pregnancy (to reduce the chance of miscarriage), it’s killing me. I’ve all but given up coffee, because I need the Coke. My husband does a lot of 100% juice mixed with water – it gives him some flavor, but cuts the sugar (even though it’s natural) in half.

Love making icy drinks with Minute Maid Light Lemonade or Limeade or Hawaiian Punch Light (5-10 calories for 8 oz), a bunch of ice, and a packet of sugarfree crystal light drink mix (or Hawaiian punch). Not sure if you are big South Park fans. And not sure if you’d remember this, it’s from a very long time ago. But as soon as I read what you wrote about pie, I heard Cartman’s voice saying: “No….more…..pie”. :) … I don’t want to be a nag. I mentioned aspartame in a post a long time ago so I left it alone this time. I knew those were Mike’s diet Coke cans because I didn’t think you’d be drinking that right now. Please have him try to cut down. I was drinking more things with aspartame in it than he is drinking diet cokes, but I did get very sick. It’s potentially dangerous. The garlic hummus though, the sky is the limit! ’til we end up like Cartman, only it’s “no….more….hummus”.

I’m trying to find a variety I dislike and so far I like them all– even mince meat (although it’s not my favorite). But I digress. Regarding drinks, one of my friends introduced me to “tea water”— just put 3 or 4 herbal tea bags in a pitcher of room-temp water and make sure you drink one or two pitchers per day. It flavors the water with no calories or artificial sweeteners and you can make sure you’re drinking enough water. My favorite is one bag of blueberry tea with two bags of lemon.

Torani syrups were our trick to staying hydrated & breaking the soda habit. You use less & less, get used to lighter flavored drinks & don’t miss pop or regular juice. They are made with either cane sugar or Splenda and come in every flavor you can imagine (and some you wouldn’t want… like peanut butter??) Mix a splash of Sugar Free French Vanilla with plain seltzer and it tastes like cream soda. Add fruity ones to white tea or decaf iced tea. Put them in milk or coffee (decaf if you wish) and they make an amazing variety of drinks. Boost your plain, diluted juices or glass of water w/lemon & you’ll never be bored again. You can buy them at World Mkt or BevMo or online to get the more exotic flavors.

I’m the same way where I hate just plain water. I’ll drink a whole thing of juice every other day and it gets expensive, since I like organic. I’ve now resorted to powder gatorade in my water. I’m sorry, I’m commenting on the wrong thing here but I have to say your love of pie struck me. I hold two to three political fundraisers at my home each year and the theme is always “Pie! Not cheap cheese and wine but Pie!” I typically make 8 to 10 fruit pies (from scratch of course) and have added a few ice cream pies. It blows me away how many people will turn out to write checks (these are all very good political causes mind you) to get a slice of pie. I held my last one for a candidate in February and there wasn’t an open seat in the house for the full three hours. And only two slices of pie left at the end (the candidate ate them).

Forget the hydrating. No one can ever get enough pie.

Is there any wonder why we are fat, why we all have cancer, and other health problems. Nothing about Diet Coke or Crystal Light is good for you. They are made from chemicals, it is a know fact that these chemical cause cancer and other health problems. Go natural, drink water!

Did you ever think this is why our kids could be diabetics, overweight, have asthma, etc. While pregnant or nursing, your baby is getting these chemicals too?

I don’t mean to be judgmental and by no means am I perfect. There are so many things that we cannot control about our lives or destiny, but the food we put in our bodies and families bodies is one thing we can control.

Vanilla Coke is my vice, but I am usually able to keep it to one a day while I’m pregnant or nursing. My last baby had a bad reaction to dairy, he would get terrible gas pains and his skin would break out in dry, scaly spots, so I had to give up dairy for the year I nursed him. That meant no milk, no cheese or anything with cheese on it, no yogurt, etc. So I was pretty proud of myself to keeping to one coke a day!
